Buffalo Bills News - September 25, 2005

Marker Bills-Falcons in Progress [3:53 PM] reports: 'Bills lineman Greg Jerman made his second career NFL start - his first since the 2003 season - at right tackle in place of the injured Mike Williams (ankle) in Sunday's game against Atlanta.'

Marker Bills LB Spikes carted off after Achilles' tendon injury [3:47 PM]
AP reports: 'Without revealing the extent of the injury, the Bills announced Spikes would not return.'

Marker Bills LB Spikes carted off after hurting lower right leg [3:46 PM]
AP reports: 'Spikes lay on the field face-down for a few minutes and then slammed his helmet to the ground in frustration after he rolled over. He required help getting to the sideline, unable to place much weight on his right foot. Spikes appeared to be in tears when he was carted off.'

Marker Vick starts, Falcons CBs banged up [3:45 PM]
AP reports: 'Starting cornerback DeAngelo Hall hurt his shoulder against Buffalo, further depleting the Falcons banged-up defensive backfield. Hall appeared to be hurt when he tackled Willis McGahee for no gain on the final play of the first quarter. He was escorted to the locker room in the second quarter, and the team listed his return as questionable.'

Marker AFC title rematch highlights Week 3 (Cont.) [10:33 AM]
ESPN reports: As Vick goes, so goes the Falcons' season. What will be interesting to see is whether Mora tries to keep Vick a little more in the pocket because of the hamstring. If he does, the Bills are the worst defense to face. The Bills are physical on defense and they are angry after rookie Carnell Williams of the Bucs rushed for 128 yards last week.

Marker Saints player made difference [10:04 AM]
Minneapolis Star Tribune reports: 'Vikings running back Mewelde Moore and Bills first-year starting quarterback J.P. Losman were teammates at Tulane two years ago. Moore hopes they never end up on the same team again. "I just didn't like the way he played ball the last two years at Tulane," Moore said. "You are what you are. He's a great player, and he'll be a great player once he plays total team ball and sells out for the team and not for himself."'

Marker Atlanta at Buffalo [9:37 AM]
Orlando Sentinel reports: 'This one may set an all-time single-game record for blitzes.'

Marker Bills must stop Falcons' sack attack [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"They're going to put pressure on you," Bills backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb said. "From what we did last week with Tampa putting pressure on us and having success with it, they're going to do the same thing. Until we handle it, until we pick it up and make some plays against it, that's what we're going to see. Until you put out the fire, they're going to keep bringing it."'

Marker Vick vs. the Bills defense: a definitive matchup for both [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"Man, that's a bunch of baloney," said Bills linebacker Takeo Spikes. "When people say things like that, they're really jealous because of what they couldn't do. The ones who usually say it are the former quarterbacks who used to play the game and now are analysts. So who cares? I'd rather have a guy on my team who wins rather than someone who sits back and throws for 200, 300 yards a game. Give me a winner. Point blank, period."'

Marker Resilience, running game required [9:04 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'J.P. Losman will be under the business end of a microscope for the next five games since he experienced a Billy Joe Hobert-Todd Collins-Joe Dufek afternoon against the Bucs' gilt-edged defense. Losman has more talent than that trio, so the optimistic view from this vantage point is that he needs to take a series of deep breaths so that he'll be able to recognize his own end zone from the twilight zone from now on.'

Marker Hotlanta fans are lukewarm [9:04 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Braves don't sell out playoff games, hockey hasn't really caught on and the NBA's Hawks have to market the opposing team's stars to boost attendance. If it weren't for Vick, arguably the city's most popular superstar since Dominique Wilkins and Deion Sanders, the Falcons' attendance figures would undoubtedly hover near the bottom of the NFL. At least in Los Angeles fans arrive late and leave early. In Atlanta, they just don't bother.'

Marker Bills Bits [6:00 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: 'The Bills stunk the joint in Tampa Bay last week but were impressive in Week 1 at home against Houston. The Falcons started big as well, defeating the Eagles at home then looked average against Seattle in Week 2.'

Marker Eager Bills ready for redemption [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"It's extremely motivating," Losman said of the drubbing the Bucs administered to him and the Bills. "It's like you've been punched in the mouth. I don't know if you've ever been in a street fight before, but I have, and I didn't like when I got hit in the face. How you retaliate is you get back. When someone attacks you like that, you take it out on the next team. That's the goal."'

Marker The trick is to stop Vick [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'There's nobody who can play like Michael Vick, and he usually wins. That has been a huge part of his appeal.'

Marker Bills Q&A: Tim Anderson [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'OK Tim, how often have you mentioned to Willis McGahee that your Buckeyes beat his Hurricanes for the national title? "Oh, it's come up a couple of times, but usually the conversation doesn't last too long. But hey, I've got the ring sitting at home and he doesn't."'

Marker Bills scouting report [5:00 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'WR Michael Jenkins is averaging 25 yards per reception, but the Falcons passing game — largely because of Vick’s erratic completion percentage — shouldn’t be Buffalo’s prime concern. If the Bills can keep Vick contained and stuff the running game, the Falcons will struggle to score, especially at the fired-up Ralph.'

Marker Inside the Herd: LB Jeff Posey [6:32 PM] reports: 'How frustrating is it for the defense to repeatedly see the offense go three and out? And do you verbally say anything to the offense to inspire them to do better next time their out on the field?
Jeff Posey: As a team we are always encouraging each other. We encourage the offense saying "we will get them next time." As a team we just comfort and encourage each other. They also encourage us when we are on defense.'

Marker Falcons hope they won't be hamstrung by Vick [3:46 PM]
AP reports: 'The game at Orchard Park is an early-season test for two non-conference teams with playoff-contending hopes, both attempting to rebound from discouraging road losses.'

Marker This DVD has long running time [9:00 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"They can come at you in different ways," said Bills defensive coordinator Jerry Gray. "You've got a guy like Dunn who is small but has a lot of speed. Duckett is a big guy who can pound it between the tackles. And of course, you have to account for Vick. It's going to be a challenge for our defense to stop these guys. After last week, I think our guys will be ready to play better than they did in Tampa."'

Marker CBS' Gannon comes out firing bullets [8:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'CBS' new starter, Rich Gannon, had an impressive start analyzing Bills quarterback J.P. Losman last Sunday. The retired Oakland Raiders quarterback did a solid job alongside CBS play-by-play man Bill Macatee explaining what Losman didn't see in the Bills' 19-3 debacle in Tampa Bay.'

Marker Vick a speedy challenge for Bills [5:00 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"You can't practice for the things he does," he said. "You can simulate it but the speed is unrealistic, just like it is on Sundays. I don't think we could ever get the real picture (in practice)."'

Marker Saturday's Atlanta Coverage [4:52 AM] reports:
Injuries hit at thin positions (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

Marker Atlanta Falcons at Buffalo Bills Preview [4:52 AM] reports: 'Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick is always trying to convince sportswriters and fans that he’s capable of being a “real” quarterback, one who can stand squarely in the pocket and make the difficult throws far downfield. This week, with his left hamstring still tender, would seem a good time to prove it.'

Marker Saints aiming for initial sellout [4:50 AM]
San Antonio Express News reports: 'A high-ranking New Orleans Saints official hit the airwaves Friday, urging fans to buy the remaining 17,000 tickets for the team's Oct.2 game with the Buffalo Bills at the Alamodome.'

Marker Vick remains probable on injury report [8:20 PM]
AP reports: 'Quarterback Michael Vick practiced Friday for the second straight day and likely will start when the Atlanta Falcons visit Buffalo this weekend.'

Marker Milloy Has Good Day, Likely To Play [5:43 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Mularkey says he gave Takeo Spikes the day off. He did have his lower leg in a wrap, but Mularkey says it's just a day off and he won't be added to the injury report.'

Marker Bills-Falcons Statistical Matchup [4:38 PM] reports: 'Vick is 23-for-42 for 279 yards, one touchdown and an interception this season. Bills first-year starter J.P. Losman is 29-for-56 for 283 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. After a disappointing game last week in Tampa, Losman looks to regroup against the league's 31st ranked pass defense.'

Marker Trio of Bills Starters Still in Question [4:38 PM] reports: 'Three Buffalo starters remain questionable for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Linebacker London Fletcher, safety Lawyer Milloy and offensive tackle Mike Williams will each be game-time decisions, after suffering injuries last weekend in Tampa.'

Marker Milloy status still uncertain for Sunday [1:59 PM]
AP reports: 'Fletcher practiced for the second straight day Friday, while Williams was still hobbling due to an ankle injury that has forced him to miss practice all week. The two also will be game-time decisions.'
