Buffalo Bills News - January 28, 2016

Marker Glenn, Incognito may command top dollar from Bills [1:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Why? This is a perfect storm for the left tackle. He plays a premium position, he's still young at 26 years old, there isn't much else available at all in free agency and the transition from college to the pros for rookie tackles has been particularly brutal the last few years. Buffalo can either pay up long term or pay up short term with the franchise tag. That number is expected to be north of $10 million. Last season's projected tag for offensive linemen was $12.9 million.'

Marker Bills leaving black media out in the cold [1:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Despite the number of African-American players on the Bills roster and football’s popularity across demographic lines, Buffalo’s black media outlets say they get virtually no advertising or promotional business from the team despite reaching out to the franchise.'

Marker Bills’ Kathryn Smith deserves the job—not the fuss [1:53 AM]
Sportsnet reports: 'So when Kathryn Smith is covered in a celebratory fashion and these powerful women remain in the shadows, what does it say about how we really feel about women working in sports? Does it mean we want to feel like we are evolved, as if it is a badge of honour? Do we want to be first to favourite a tweet and re-post on Facebook in order to wave the flag of women’s rights as if to say, “Hey look at me, women’s inclusion is part of my personal brand!” Does it mean we want to fight so hard against the uneducated Kevin Kileys of the world that we unintentionally advocate the opposite just to spite him? What does it say about what we expect women to accomplish?'

Marker Website calculates Tyrod's current market value over $19 million per year [1:52 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Spotrac has been fairly accurate on other extension-projections and value calculations. Before defensive tackle Marcell Dareus signed his new contract, it forecast the deal would be 6-years, $101.4 million, with an average annual value of $16.9 million. The actual numbers landed at 6-years, $96.5 million, with an average of just over $16 million.'

Marker Bills hoping to sign Incognito 'for a couple more years' [1:51 AM]
WGR-AM reports: '“I know this much,” the Bills GM said. “He played better than I remember him playing when I used to scout him years past. That’s a testament to him, the work he put in, that year he was off, and buying in to just trying to be the best he can.”'

Marker Bills seeking developmental depth at QB [1:50 AM] reports: 'The only exception to that assessment in Mobile this week might be North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz. Blessed with prototype size at 6-5 and 230 pounds, Wentz has all the physical tools and is forecast as a first-round pick. His task this week is to prove that he can hang with the power five conference talent at the FBS level after playing his entire college career in the FCS.'

Marker Bills’ Whaley asserting himself [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'And yet, there’s a threat of honest urgency in his voice, too. Continuity has its limits – the Bills are not prepared to invest long term in quarterback Tyrod Taylor quite yet. As Taylor gears up for his first Pro Bowl appearance in Hawaii, Whaley is in Mobile after all. He’s still searching for a franchise quarterback, still keeping all options open.'

Marker Bills will be looking to gain an edge at draft [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“For us, it all just depends on how we see them, meaning how do they do what they do,” Whaley said. “Some guys are going to be more 3-4 outside-linebacker pass-rushers and there are some guys that are going to be 4-3 defensive-end outside pass-rushers. And the best thing about Rex and his staff is they just say, ‘Get us the best players and we’ll make sure we can fit them in with what we do.’'

Marker Whaley gives good news on Aaron Williams: He’ll be back [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The safety who suffered a scary neck injury last year against the New England Patriots in Week 2, returned at Tennessee and then was shelved for the season will be back, General Manager Doug Whaley said Tuesday. That's as great of a free agent-like signing the Bills will make all offseason.'

Marker Richie Incognito's redemption, Braxton Miller's spin move, Wade Phillips' subtle jab [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'As for whether he’s changed as a person, only he can truly ever say. But as teammate after teammate tweeted to him Monday about his Pro Bowl honor – and Incognito took the time to respond to each one – it pointed to a player who is respected in the Bills’ locker room. Buffalo gave Incognito another chance, and he appears to be making the most of it.'

Marker Wide right: 25 years later [1:55 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“I don’t look back on those years and think, ‘Oh, those are the four years we lost the Super Bowl,’” he said. “If you’re a fan of a team, what do you want them to do? You want them to win. Think about those four years, we had an awful lot of excitement being fans of the Buffalo Bills. Sure, we lost four Super Bowls, but there wasn’t any other team that was winning more than we were. Think about all those games we won.”'

Marker Smith’s hiring finally gives NFL good female news [1:54 AM]
Fort Worth Star Telegram reports: 'You’re either qualified for the job or you’re not. Kathryn Smith, as Rex Ryan affirmed, is as qualified as Becky Hammon and Nancy Lieberman are for their NBA assistant coach jobs.'

Marker Bills GM Doug Whaley says united Ryan brothers is 'a positive' [1:53 AM]
ESPN reports: '"I think it is going to allow me to be more involved in the team, even if just for supporting my coordinators and things, and I am going to be right there for them," he said. "Because this is my football team, that is how I am approaching it. It is not that I am just a defensive guy. No, this is my team. Offensive players, every offensive player, every special-team player, every offensive coach, every special-teams coach: This is it. This is all about who I am, I think this will help me to really tie in more to this football team, and that's because we got to be like this. And for us to be at our best, we got to be like this. And I think some of the moves that I made, I think will allow me to even bring them even closer."'

Marker Bills' GM Whaley Updates Offseason at Senior Bowl [1:52 AM]
WGR-AM reports: '-Aaron Williams is "ready to go," and, if the team had made the playoffs, the safety could have participated. Williams suffered a neck injury early in the 2015 season. Whaley also said he expects defensive lineman Kyle Williams, who missed 10 games in 2015, back by training camp. He said there is no need to overhaul that side of the ball with several new starters. Wide receiver Percy Harvin's health is still unknown, but "I want him back," Whaley said.'

Marker Senior Bowl: Bills staff gets look at deep DL group [1:51 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Kyle Williams is going to be 33 years old and coming off a knee injury that ended his season. The Bills plan on bringing him back as of now, but with an $8 million salary cap hit, there’s always the chance he isn’t fully recovered and the team decides to move on.'

Marker 16 offensive tackles to know for Bills, Part 1 [1:50 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'One of two big-time tackle prospects out of the Big Ten, Taylor Decker certainly has all the prototypical features a team would want.'

Marker In 2015 young leaders stepped forward [1:49 AM] reports: '“As far as the leadership thing, first year here, learning some of the guys, I was seeing how guys respond to different things,” said Taylor. “Learning different people, but I think I’ve taken steps forward in that department.”'

Marker WR size not easy to find in this year's draft class [1:48 AM] reports: '“I think first of all you’ve got to look at the uncertainty that we have,” said Whaley in a recent appearance on Bills flagship station WGR Sportsradio 550. “Robert Woods has had some medical issues and ended the season on I-R. Chris Hogan is going to be a restricted free agent. Percy Harvin has got an automatic opt out, a void in his contract. So just by sheer numbers it’s a position we’re going to have to entertain.”'

Marker Phillips and DeHaven make compelling Super Bowl storyline [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Bills fans can always count on something reminding them about a time in which the standards were considerably higher than what’s accepted today. Phillips and DeHaven worked together when the Bills won their last playoff game, in 1999, and their dismissals signaled the start of a 16-year playoff drought.'

Marker Taylor, Wood, Incognito added to Pro Bowl [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Buffalo's lone player to be originally selected to the game, running back LeSean McCoy, will not participate because of a knee injury suffered late in the 2015 season.'

Marker Cordy Glenn, Richie Incognito rank among top 20 pending unrestricted free agents [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"Incognito’s off-field reputation preceded him heading into 2015, but he has always been one of the better guards in the league, and his signing always seemed a shrewd piece of business by Rex Ryan from an on-field perspective," PFF's David Aitken writes. "It would appear the year out of the league did him a world of good, as he never had a season as strong as 2015 with Buffalo. Baltimore’s Marshal Yanda held the top spot in PFF’s guard grades for the second straight year, but right behind him was Richie Incognito, buoyed by an excellent performance in the run game."'

Marker What could have been with Cam Newton, Percy Harvin's possible return and Doug Marrone's mi [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills held the No. 3 pick in that year’s draft – going 4-4 in the final eight games of the season after an 0-8 start. Denver held the No. 2 pick, and had both Luck and Newton been in the draft, would have had a big decision to make. The Broncos still had Tim Tebow, a former first-round draft pick, on their roster. At that point, he only had made three career starts. Would they have taken Luck or Newton and cut ties with Tebow without ever really giving him a chance to start? It became moot after Luck returned to school, but it’s hard not to think about when Newton is playing the way he did Sunday.'

Marker Bills' Taylor, Wood get Pro Bowl nods [1:55 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Wood started all 16 games for the Bills in 2015 and helped pave the way to the Bills having both the top rushing attack in the NFL in yards (2,432) and yards per carry (4.78). The Bills also had three rushers surpass the 500-yard mark – McCoy (895), Taylor (568), and Karlos Williams (517) - for the first time since 1962. Wood is the first Bills center headed to the Pro Bowl since Kent Hull in 1990.'

Marker Bills' Richie Incognito headed to Pro Bowl, will replace Cardinals' Mike Iupati [1:54 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Incognito and Wood were part of the Bills' much-improved offensive line. Incognito, who was suspended by the Miami Dolphins in 2013 for his role in a bullying scandal and did not play in the 2014 season, was signed to a one-year deal for 2015. He is now a free agent.'

Marker Wade Phillips, once fired by Buffalo Bills, is a hero in Denver [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'The man is 68 and has been coaching somewhere — in high school, college or the pros — in 47 of the last 49 seasons, which bears witness to both his skills and stubbornness. And today, in (a) Colorado and (b) among all those coaching lifers out there, he is pretty much a football hero.'

Marker Bills' Tyrod Taylor, Eric Wood to replace Cam Newton, Ryan Kailil in 2016 Pro Bowl [1:52 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Wood is making his first appearance in the Pro Bowl following his seventh season in the league. He made a big jump forward, along with the rest of the Bills' offensive line, under new offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Buffalo led the league in rushing in 2015, and Wood played a part in that.'

Marker Bills QB Taylor, C Wood, G Incognito added to Pro Bowl [1:51 AM]
AP reports: 'This was Taylor's first season as a starter after spending the previous four years as Joe Flacco's backup in Baltimore. He set a Bills quarterback record with 568 yards rushing while throwing 20 touchdown passes versus six interceptions.'

Marker Hogan, Bryant, Rambo headline Bills RFA list of seven [1:50 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Bryant was a key member of the defense this past season. He started week one while Marcell Dareus sat out for his suspension. He then became the full-time starter in place of Kyle Williams after he was lost for the season. He's regarded as one of the smartest players on the team, able to pick up the defense very quickly and understand his roles and responsibilities. That's very valuable for this team going forward, considering last year's issues in that department. Although he came into the league in 2011, Bryant hasn't played enough to qualify for unrestricted free agency, so the Bills have a great opportunity to keep one of their own here without overspending.'

Marker Taylor, Wood, Incognito headed to Pro Bowl [1:49 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Running back LeSean McCoy was voted in, but pulled out so he can continue to recover from a late-season injury. Chris Ivory of the Jets will take his place.'

Marker Bills UFAs: Plenty of decisions to be made [1:48 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'But Incognito and Glenn are only two of what will be eight unrestricted free agents come the middle of March. There are also seven restricted free agents the team has to make decisions on, as well. The Bills obviously can't keep them all.'
