Buffalo Bills News - May 1, 2016

Marker Day 3 choices are a roll of the dice for Buffalo [9:32 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'But as Monos cautioned, “We’re pretty excited, but I always tell you guys, every team right now loves their draft. You’re all sitting around like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe this guy fell.’ You’re going to hear all the clichés. “I’m excited about the schools we got these guys from, I think there’s something to that. Those schools hold their guys accountable — and that’s what we want our guys to do.”'

Marker Bills head coach Rex Ryan gets what he wants in NFL Draft; now it's up to him [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'This Rex Ryan boast may be no exaggeration. After three busy days, he now has a disruptive pass rusher (Shaq Lawson), snarling inside linebacker (Reggie Ragland) and versatile defensive lineman (Adolphus Washington). Now, it's on Ryan. This is a defense that fell from No. 4 to No. 19 overall, one that had 54 sacks under Jim Schwartz and then a franchise-low 21 under Ryan. Going defense-defense-defense absolutely puts more pressure on Ryan to now get it right.'

Marker Why the Bills opted to wait and see with QB Cardale Jones [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"We think our situation's good for him," Whaley said. "He's going to come in and be a three, be able to develop, be able to learn under some professionals that have been at their craft for awhile, with EJ and Tyrod. We like his skill set. He's got the talent to possibly be a franchise guy. Is he there yet? Absolutely not. He's got a lot of work and a lot of ways to go.'

Marker Bills Address Offense on Day 3, Highlighted by Jones [11:54 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'The year before, Jones' sophomore season, he was forced into the starting job following injuries to Braxton Miller and Barrett. Jones responded, carrying Ohio State to the natoinal title, firing 7 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions with 860 yards along the way. Jones stands tall under center at 6'5" and weighing in at 253 pounds.'

Marker Glenn Gronkowski tweets he's joining the Bills [11:53 PM]
WGR-AM reports: '“That would be awesome,” he said in Indianapolis at the time. “Obviously, growing up, we were at all the Bills games. We were cheering for the Bills, all that. Obviously they never had been that good (while he was growing up), but we were always there cheering for them and everything. But yeah, that would be awesome to be there.”'

Marker UB's Licata will get a shot with the Bills [11:53 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'The 6-2, 210-pounder is a pure pocket passer, but has enough athleticism and quick enough feet to move around and evade the rush when needed.'

Marker Bills choose Arkansas RB Jonathan Williams in 5th round [11:46 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'In 2014, Williams was a second-team all-SEC selection after rushing for 1,190 yards and 12 touchdowns, even though he split carries with junior Alex Collins. Williams also shared the load with Collins as a sophomore, when he had 900 yards and four touchdowns.'

Marker Five things to know about the Bills' newest quarterback, Ohio State's Cardale Jones [11:46 PM]
Buffalo News reports: '"He really didn't play that poorly this year when you look at his games," Bills Director of Player Personnel Jim Monos said. "He didn't have blow-up games. The guys just wants to be good and he's going to be molded."'

Marker Bills 'very comfortable' in taking the EJ Manuel gamble again behind Tyrod Taylor [11:45 PM]
Buffalo News reports: '"When you look around the league, we think he's as good a No. 2 as most out there," Whaley said. "He's a No. 2 for a reason and so are a lot of other guys. But we think he can come in and hold serve if Tyrod ever loses some playing time. And then, he's a consummate professional. He's going to try to get better and better each day. Granted, everybody's going to say 'Look at the Jacksonville game.' But we were leading until that last drive and he came back from a 28-point deficit. If we win the game everybody talks about it being the biggest comeback victory since Frank Reich.'

Marker Transcript of Bills' Whaley & Monos and draft picks Cardale Jones & Jonathan Williams [11:45 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'He’s got a lot of work and a lot of ways to go, but this guy’s driven. This guy’s a proven winner. He’s undefeated. Everybody talks about his accuracy but look at his completion percentage; it’s over 60-percent. He had a 105 quarterback rating against ranked teams. And again, he’s undefeated. All I’m saying is we got a nice guy to work with, with a high upside, so we’re excited to have him.'

Marker Bills keep doubling down as a run-first offense with Jonathan Williams pick [11:44 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Despite boasting a full convoy of backs, the Bills took Arkansas running back Jonathan Williams, who missed all of the 2015 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his foot. Splitting carries the year before, he rushed for 1,190 yards and 12 touchdowns. He'll now join a backfield that includes LeSean McCoy, Karlos Williams, Mike Gillislee and James Wilder Jr. Last year, this group was hit hard by injuries at various points. In a 14-13 win at Tennessee, Buffalo was forced to start Boobie Dixon (19 yards on seven carries) and Boom Herron, picked up off the streets, even had a team-high nine carries that game.'

Marker Bills make TCU WR Kolby Listenbee their 6th-round draft pick [11:44 PM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I could go to the Olympics if I wanted to," he said, while declaring himself the fastest player in the NFL.'

Marker Three things to know about the Bills' newest running back, Jonathan Williams [11:43 PM]
Buffalo News reports: '"He's downhill, straight ahead. Great vision. Instincts," Monos said, explaining the 6-foot-0, 223-pounder's running style.'

Marker Bills hope WR Kolby Listenbee, self-proclaimed fastest player in football, opens up offense [11:43 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Armed with a quarterback (Tyrod Taylor) who can throw deep and a wide receiver (Sammy Watkins) who draws double-teams, the Bills hope TCU's Kolby Listenbee provides what Graham and Goodwin could not.'

Marker Three things to know about the Bills' newest wide receiver, Kolby Listenbee [11:42 PM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I'm playing football," he said. "I'm a football player that happened to be fast – happened to be blessed to be fast."'

Marker Bills use second 6th-round pick on USC CB Kevon Seymour [11:41 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The 6-foot, 185-pound Seymour had three career interceptions at USC, as well as seven kickoff returns for 92 yards.'

Marker Three things to know about the Bills' newest cornerback, Kevon Seymour [11:40 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Bills General Manager Doug Whaley has said he likes to take a cornerback every year, and he lived up to that with the selection of Seymour.'

Marker Transcripts of interviews with 6th-round picks Kolby Listenbee & Kevon Seymour [11:40 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Oh yeah, for sure. I’m the fastest football player probably in the NFL so I bring speed, I got great hands. Right now, I got a chip on my shoulder because I got to go out there and show what I have and I mean, I just work hard. I just need an opportunity to go out there and make it happen.'

Marker Why the Bills opted to wait and see with QB Cardale Jones [11:39 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'This is a true boom-or-bust prospect who one day could be the “franchise guy” General Manager Doug Whaley said he has the potential of becoming … or he could be a career backup, which is typical of quarterbacks selected in the third round or lower.'

Marker Transcript of postdraft press conference with Bills GM Doug Whaley and coach Rex Ryan [11:39 PM]
Buffalo News reports: ' We can never envision the board falling the way it did because of the draft but with the way we kind of look ahead, we kind of knew that if we had the cap restrictions with the guys, our guys that we re-signed, not being able to go out and fill through the free agent market, but we knew this was going to be a draft heavy in some of the spots that we might be losing the guys. So it correlated pretty well. Is that always going to happen? No, but it happened this year.'

Marker UB left tackle John Kling signs as undrafted free agent with Bears; QB Joe Licata, TE Matt Weiser la [11:38 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Quarterback Joe Licata has accepted an invitation from the Buffalo Bills to participate in a tryout at the team’s upcoming rookie minicamp, while left tackle John Kling will sign as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears.'

Marker Gronkowski party rolls on as ‘Goose’ signs with Bills [11:37 PM]
Buffalo News reports: '“He called and said he wanted me,” Gronkowski said at a post-draft party at Amherst Pizza & Ale House. “He made it very clear he wanted me. A couple of teams had called earlier than that. I sat down with my agent and my family and decided to go to Buffalo.”'

Marker Bills head coach Rex Ryan gets what he wants in NFL Draft; now it's up to him [11:37 PM]
Buffalo News reports: '“I’m going to have a tough time believing somebody had a better draft,” Ryan said.'

Marker Bills take Ohio State QB Cardale Jones in fourth round [11:34 PM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“This guy has stuff to work on, but he doesn’t have any muscle memory already ingrained in him that’s bad,” said Whaley. “We’ve got a piece of clay and we can mold him and we have some qualified guys to mold him. This guy’s a proven winner, he’s driven, he’s undefeated. We got a nice guy to work with, with a high upside.”'

Marker Bills filled several glaring needs in the NFL Draft [11:33 PM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'After a 2015 season where the defense underachieved tremendously and was probably the main reason why the Bills missed the playoffs for a 16th year in a row, the Bills attacked the first three rounds by picking three players who should be able to step right in and, if not start, certainly contribute to the front seven in Ryan’s scheme.'

Marker Bills take a chance on Ohio State’s Cardale Jones [11:29 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Jones, 6-foot-5, 253 pounds, led the Buckeyes to the national championship after the 2014 season. He began the campaign as the No. 3 QB, but injuries pushed him into the starting job during the playoffs during which he beat Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship Game, Alabama in the national semifinals and Oregon in the championship game … all in impressive fashion.'

Marker Glenn Gronkowski signs with Buffalo Bills as undrafted free agent [11:27 PM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Gronkowski faces an uphill battle to make the Bills' roster, but the Williamsville native gets to stay close to home. He had just 15 career catches for the Wildcats and needs to improve as a blocker to stick on the roster.'

Marker Grading the Bills pick of USC's Kevon Seymour [11:26 PM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Seymour may be a long shot to make the roster, but he has experience as a return man and as a gunner. The Bills needed to find contributors for special teams, and Seymour has a chance to be just that.'

Marker Buffalo Bills select Kevon Seymour in sixth round [11:25 PM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Doug Whaley firmly believes in drafting cornerbacks often, and he stuck to that philosophy with this pick. Seymour had just three interceptions in his college career, but he ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.'

Marker Grading the Bills pick of TCU's Kolby Listenbee [11:24 PM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'It's tough to argue with the Bills getting a wide receiver with this much upside so late in the draft. He ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash despite a double sports hernia. His personal best in the 100-meter dash is 10.09 seconds. The kid can flat out fly and isn't shy about it. He said he's the fastest player in the NFL and could be in the Olympics if he wanted to.'
