Buffalo Bills News - September 2, 2015

Marker NFL personnel people expect Bills to cut Cassel [7:25 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The primary logic behind the potential move is, with a cap figure of nearly $5 million, Cassel is far too expensive to remain on the roster as a reserve and the Bills need all of the cap space they can get to extend the contract of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcell Dareus. The team is negotiating a deal with Dareus, and, as The News has reported, is offering him more than $90 million over six years.'

Marker Simms, other Bills have last chance to impress Rex Ryan [7:24 PM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"Quite a bit of it is decided," Ryan said of the 53-man roster that will open the season Sept. 13 against Indianapolis. "But I still think this game is important and there is generally three or four guys that will come into this game and have a chance to win a job or, quite honestly, lose a job. So you never say, ‘Hey this is the roster that is made’ because there are always some guys that will step up and will earn a roster spot in this last game."'

Marker Rex Ryan goes from incompetent Idzik to ‘rogue’ Bills GM [7:22 PM]
New York Post reports: 'Rex Ryan just can’t find himself a team with a normal general manager, can he?'

Marker LeSean McCoy injury: Buffalo Bills RB may not be ready for Week 1, according to report [7:21 PM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"It's way too early to say whether (McCoy) will play or not," a source told Anderson. "He is doing a little bit more every day. But hell yes, I'm concerned about that. I can't say for sure he's going to be with us Week 1. I can't say that at all. It will take everything we got just to get him ready for game day, and then we get to game day (there's) no way he can be in great football shape. So I think he will be on a pitch count, I think at the very best."'

Marker Jackson critical of GM Whaley in parting shot from Bills [7:20 PM]
The Sports Xchange reports: '"He wasn't honest with me the entire time that I've known him," Jackson told the Buffalo News. "I have the utmost respect for the organization. There's only one person in that organization that I haven't gotten honesty from, and that was him."'

Marker Source: Bills having internal debate about cutting Cassel [7:19 PM]

Marker Bills were left with no easy choices [12:31 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Fred was the league’s oldest running back. In three of the last four years, he did not play a full season due to injury and he dealt with a potentially nagging hamstring this preseason. His role was backup running back … period. No special teams contribution.'

Marker Duke Williams re-adjusting to backing up Graham [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“I’m not frustrated at all because I know what I can do and I know how good of a football player I am,” Williams said after the Bills’ practice Tuesday. “Whatever role I have, I’m going to fill it to the best of my ability. That’s what I’m worried about, instead of who’s on the field first. It’s important to some guys. Of course I want to be a starter, of course I feel like I worked for it, but with Corey being the starter, I’m going to back him up and help us win games.”'

Marker Jackson blindsided, but he’ll be fine [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“It definitely was tough,” Jackson said Tuesday night by telephone from Seattle. “I’ve said all along that the goal was to finish my career as a Buffalo Bill. That ended yesterday. It was a tough pill to swallow, especially because I felt like I can still contribute. I didn’t get that opportunity.”'

Marker Fred Jackson’s 10 greatest games [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Sept. 25, 2011. Vs. New England. Jackson’s 38-yard catch-and-run play sets up last-second winning field goal as Bills snap 15-game losing streak to Patriots with 34-31 victory. Gains 161 scrimmage yards (74 rushing and 87 receiving).'

Marker Carpenter’s kicking woes becoming worrisome to Ryan [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“We’re the only team in the league that keeps a kickoff specialist. With that being said, you do that to make sure you’re giving your kicker a chance to focus on one thing and that’s field goals.”'

Marker Ryan calls out Bills kicker Dan Carpenter [1:55 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"He missed a couple field goals and an extra point; that's concerning because he missed a lot of camp, so we have to see him kick better, quite honestly," Ryan said, reviewing Carpenter's shaky preseason performance to date.'

Marker Fred Jackson's release cuts into M&T's marketing [1:54 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"As a leader on the Buffalo Bills, in our community and an official partner of M&T Bank, we thank Fred Jackson for his contributions, we congratulate him on his accomplishments, and we wish him the very best in the future," said Chet Bridger, a spokesman for the bank. "Fred will always have a place in our community and in our hearts, and as such we will be looking at our marketing plans going forward."'

Marker Bills GM Doug Whaley reportedly 'went rogue' cutting Fred Jackson [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'There is plenty of reason to believe Whaley was the one pushing for the move. For starters, he's the one who traded a fourth-round pick for running back Bryce Brown, who is one of the players who took a potential spot for Jackson on the depth chart. Whaley was also the only one included in the team's statement regarding the release of Jackson, and he alone addressed the media about the move prior to practice Monday.'

Marker Seantrel Henderson will start at right tackle, and 3 other notes from Buffalo Bills practice [1:52 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'He showed up to camp in shape, passed his conditioning test and quickly overtook Cyrus Kouandjio at right tackle. On Tuesday, Rex Ryan named him the starter at the position for the regular season.'

Marker Former Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson visiting Seattle Seahawks [1:51 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Playing behind a patchwork offensive line and with a mediocre quarterback in 2014, Jackson had 1,000 yards from scrimmage and set a career high with 66 catches while also having a career-low 3.7 yards per carry.'

Marker Bills say goodbye to one of the good guys [1:50 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: 'What’s worse is that, fuzzy sentiments pushed aside, the move doesn’t seem to make that much sense. It’ll be a big surprise if the “Ground and Pound” Bills don’t keep four running backs for the regular season, and three of those were going to be LeSean McCoy (alpha dog), Karlos Williams (newly-drafted rookie) and Anthony Dixon (short yardage/special teams). But Bryce Brown?'

Marker Business side of NFL stuns Bills fans, Fred Jackson [1:49 AM]
Canandaigua Daily Messenger reports: 'The fact that Fred Jackson won't be a part of this year's team doesn't diminish his accomplishments. It gives us the chance to celebrate them. But this is the life he chose, and this is how that life ends.'

Marker Carroll: No decision on Fred Jackson; Robert Turbin ankle injury one reason for interest [1:48 AM]
Seattle Times reports: 'Jackson visited Seattle on Tuesday, and though there were reports that he might quickly sign, Carroll said after practice that the team had yet to make a decision and the there was no deal done at the end of the day. Carroll said Jackson, 34, would take a physical and hinted that the team would need to get a better understanding of Turbin’s situation before deciding how to proceed.'

Marker Ex-Bills' RB Jackson meets, takes physical with Seahawks [1:47 AM]
Everett Herald reports: '“I know Marshawn and him are very good friends and get along. Other than that, that didn’t feed into this,” said Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who noted that the relationship between Jackson and Seattle’s reclusive star running back was not the reason for the team’s interest in Jackson. “He’s just a heck of a football player who might be able to find a role.”'

Marker Rex Ryan's swagger returns with Buffalo Bills, his 'last stop in coaching' [1:46 AM]
USA Today reports: '“There are always going to be people that judge you, but that’s OK,” Ryan said. “People should worry about themselves more than they should worry about me. They don’t have to agree with me, or whatever, but I got news for you: I’m not changing. I’m going to be myself. I don’t care if you like it, or you dislike it. This is who I am.”'

Marker Bills cornerback McKelvin begins light workouts on sideline [1:45 AM]
AP reports: 'Coach Rex Ryan called it a step in the right direction, while adding there's no timetable when McKelvin can begin practicing.'

Marker Ex-Bills RB Fred Jackson meeting with the Seahawks [1:44 AM]
AP reports: 'If Turbin is sidelined for an extensive period, the Seahawks could use what Jackson provides. Though slowed by injuries the past few years, Jackson is a versatile play-maker as a rusher and receiver, and also a dependable blocker.'

Marker Bills add C Freeman, LB Reddick [1:43 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Reddick also went undrafted in 2013, originally signing with the New Orleans Saints. He has spent time with the Carolina Panthers and San Diego Chargers, with 12 special teams tackles to his credit in 21 career NFL games.'

Marker Seahawks eager to sign RB Fred Jackson [1:42 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'As the occasional supersub behind Lynch, with excellent hands and awareness as a pass blocker, Jackson could prolong his career and do something he has never done in the NFL -- reach the playoffs.'

Marker Fred Jackson says GM Doug Whaley wasn't honest with him [1:41 AM]
ESPN reports: '"They gave me a shot. I'll always be happy about that, but ... they closed the door on me playing there, too."'

Marker With QB competition settled, Simms gets chance to start [1:40 AM]
WGR-AM reports: '“In this league, every time you play you are always auditioning for someone,” Simms said after practice Tuesday. “Whether it is your own teammates, your own coaches, whoever else is watching. But of course anytime that you play football people are always watching. No matter who it is, you just got to go out there play, play hard, execute the play and just have fun.”'

Marker Bills' Ryan said don't look for the 1st team in Detroit [1:39 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Some coaches like to get them in for a series or two, but Ryan said, “They’ll be plenty of guys that will be playing that’ll be fighting for roster spots, but I think the starters as we know them will probably sit this one out.”'

Marker Bills slowly getting healthier [1:38 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Tuesday morning, wide receivers Sammy Watkins and Percy Harvin both took part in the QB/WR individual session as full participants, running every route, including deeper ones and hard cuts, at full speed. Wide receiver Robert Woods had his helmet with him and took part in stretching and catching passes from the jugs machine, but did not take a rep in the route-running portion of practice the media was able to watch. Chris Hogan also had a helmet with him, but only took part in the stretching portion and then did some footwork on the side with trainers.'

Marker 5 Bills practice notes from September 1 [1:37 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'For the first time since his hospitalization and subsequent “sensitive” medical procedure, rookie running back Karlos Williams worked along the side with trainers and some other injured players. Before his injury, Williams was looking the part as a potential number-two running back behind LeSean McCoy with not only an explosive running style, but as someone who is quite good at pass protection on third downs. The Bills maintain that Williams will be back for the opener, so his inclusion to some form of practice was encouraging.'
