Buffalo Bills News - September 23, 2017

Marker It’s not quite time for a quarterback change at New Era Field [1:31 AM]
Rochester Business Journal reports: 'In today’s NFL, you need your quarterback to do more than “keep us in the game.” You need him to win the game. And I don’t see Taylor being that guy. Again, it’s unfair to put all this on him. He is hamstrung by a dearth of playmakers. The truth is, he and the offense played almost well enough these past two seasons to make the playoffs, but were done in by Ryan’s ruination of what had been one of the league’s better defenses and by the buffoon coach’s terrible game management, especially when the outcome was still in doubt.'

Marker Ex-Oregon State safety Jordan Poyer leading Buffalo Bills defensive resurgence [1:30 AM]
Portland Oregonian reports: 'The former Oregon State star is tied for the team lead in sacks with two, is third in tackles with 14 and has one of the team's two interceptions. Poyer six passes defended is second in the NFL and he posted 11 tackles (seven solo), one sack and three passes defensed in the 9-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 2.'

Marker Bills without tackles Cordy Glenn, Marcell Dareus for Denver [1:29 AM]
AP reports: 'Defensive tackle Jerel Worthy is out with a concussion. Defensive end Shaq Lawson is expected to play. He was injured against Carolina and has a nerve contusion in his foot.'

Marker Near record temperatures expected for Bills game [1:28 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: '"We decided that we would ramp up in preparation and we would rather be over prepared than under prepared," explained Thomas Maxian, AMR WNY's reigional director. "We expect to treat several people for some heat exhaustion and overheating. Hopefully none for heat stroke."'

Marker Bills not worried about criticism heading into showdown with Broncos [1:27 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: '“We could care less about what anybody outside this locker room thinks. You’re not out on the field with us. We know what we’re capable of, we just have to execute.”'

Marker LT Cordy Glenn says he won’t play Sunday Vs. Broncos [1:26 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: ''“It’s just not ready to go this week so I’m just going to keep attacking the rehab and doing it over and over again and see how it feels,” Glenn said.'

Marker Bills fans prepare for things to heat up on and off the field [1:25 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'It could be the hottest home game on record since 2002 when the temperature hit 89 degrees during a Bills home opener loss to the Jets.

Marker Bills rookies make a difference through Toyota Rookie Club [1:24 AM] reports: '“With our youth football outreach, we want to provide kids with an opportunity to engage with our players, and learn from them,” said Preston Teague, Buffalo Bills Director of Community Relations and Youth Football. “NFL Flag Football is a program that we hope to grow throughout Western New York and our Rookies did an amazing job working with the kids, it was a great night.”'

Marker Dareus and Glenn both out for Sunday [1:23 AM] reports: 'Rookie Dion Dawkins will make his first NFL start Sunday against a strong Denver defensive front, but he’s more than ready having seen action each of the first two games.'

Marker Scouting Report - Week 3 - Bills-Broncos [1:22 AM] reports: ''Hughes might have the most advantageous matchup of any Bills player this week. With Denver starting LT Garett Bolles questionable with a bone bruise, Buffalo’s right defensive end will be working against a backup.'

Marker Quick Hits: Lawson looking good, Glenn a wait and see [1:21 AM] reports: 'Glenn’s status seems a bit more questionable. After seeing some time on the practice field Thursday, Glenn was held out of practice Friday. That's not an encouraging sign after getting work on his ailing ankle the day prior. It sounds like the offensive staff wants to move into the early stages of the weeknd before determining what their starting left tackle will be able to give them on Sunday.'

Marker Bills Today: Numbers at New Era Field favor the Bills [1:20 AM] reports: 'When Taylor plays in Orchard Park he has a respectable record of 10-6. The Bills average 26.0 points per game in those games. His touchdown to interception ratio is solid, slinging 23 touchdowns and forfeiting nine interceptions. All of that gives the team’s third-year starter in Buffalo a passer rating of 98.1 on home turf.'

Marker Beating the Odds: Bills' 18 undrafted players feel special bond [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"As me and my guy Ryan Davis say, 'We're from the mud,' " said Yarbrough. "We didn't get that luxury of coming into the league where we can make six, seven, eight mistakes but because we were drafted and they've got money invested in us they're going to keep us. We have a little more pressure on us.'

Marker Andre Reed on Bills rookie WR Zay Jones: 'He's going to make a lot of plays this year' [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“It wasn’t that I was beating a dead horse,” the greatest receiver in team history said this week. “It was just the mindset that I needed. If it's on your fingertips, you should be able to catch it.”'

Marker Kimberley A. Martin: Hauschka wants to be part of the solution on racial inequality [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Hauschka spoke for nearly 20 minutes after practice Thursday about his transition to the Bills, how head coach Sean McDermott is building something “amazing” and “special,” and his genuine appreciation of the area (“I’m blessed to be here in Buffalo. What a great city to raise our first son in.”). And during our candid conversation about life and football, the 32-year-old opened up about another topic close to his heart: racial equality.'

Marker Bills Notebook: Broncos coach doesn't see a 'trap game,' Lawson will be ready for Sun [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“This is probably the best front seven we’ve seen all year, including the preseason,” Joseph said. “It’s going to be a true challenge for us. Right now they’re ranked, what, third in the league, only allowing I think 264 yards a game, so that’s big time.”'

Marker Jay Skurski's Bills Mailbag: What's up with Blanton? Is rivalry against Dolphins dead? [1:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“We just felt that … looking at our roster and the bottom third of our roster – and trying to improve every day like we always try and do – we felt like this would give us a chance to get a player of Robert’s caliber,” he said. “He’s been here before and he knows the system. He is a good special teams player as well as a backup safety at this point.”'

Marker How long are the Bills tied to Cordy Glenn? [1:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The earliest the Bills could move on from Glenn is after this season. They’d have to do that before the third day of the new league year in March, when $6.5 million of his base salary becomes guaranteed. If the Bills were to cut Glenn at that point, they’d save a little more than $3 million in cap space in 2018, although Glenn could potentially cost more than $11 million in “dead money.” Potentially, that is, because the team could designated him as a "June 1" cut, which would spread out the amount of dead money over two years. That would put the Bills on the hook for $4.7 million in 2018 and $6.4 million in 2019. The cap savings in 2018 in that case would be $9.75 million.'

Marker Advanced Stats: Broncos' edge dominance, Siemian's under-pressure passing woes [1:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Barrett registered four quarterback pressures in Week One against the Chargers and a whopping eight against the Cowboys on Sunday. He also had five run-game stops, so he hasn't been a one-trick pony.'

Marker Bills' McCoy lets it run: Hates whiners, loves his team, defends QB Taylor [1:52 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“When I watch the tape, it is never as bad as you thought but it’s never as good as you thought either," McCoy said. “I just felt there were some plays I could have made. You watch the tape and maybe it is not as many as you thought but just knowing myself, everybody has to be honest when they watch the tape. You have to know your game. The problem with this league is a lot of players don’t take accountability, and I do. I will get it right this week."'

Marker Don't hold your breath; Andrew Luck to the Buffalo Bills not likely [1:51 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Let’s start with this: Luck is 28 years old, in the prime of his career, and though he’s currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. You don’t trade a guy like that, no matter what the return.'

Marker Buffalo Bills' Marcell Dareus holds long streak in run defense according to PFF [1:50 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Dareus, 27, has been in a rotation at defensive tackle this season. He's played 52 snaps in two games and currently holds a PFF grade of 80.2 this season. His PFF grade is 28th among all interior defensive lineman in 2017.'

Marker Broncos' Vance Joseph doing what Rex Ryan should have done with Buffalo Bills [1:49 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"I came up in this league with a lot of old school coaches in Mike Nolan and Wade Phillips and all those guys and Marvin Lewis," Joseph said. "I was always taught, as a coordinator or as a head coach, you have to do what your players do best. I'm not opposed to running a 3-4 or a 4-3 or whatever makes our players successful. I'm not a coordinator that's going to show up and just shove my defense down the players' throat. I'm going to do what's best for the personnel."'

Marker 5 things to watch as the Bills host the Broncos [1:48 AM]
Batavia Daily News reports: 'Shady back on track?: This one is almost as much about the offensive line as it is about LeSean McCoy. The Bills workhorse back was held to a terrible day against the Panthers. He had 12 carries and only nine yards rushing. Very ugly. McCoy didn’t have many holes as the offensive line had a poor game as well. Both need to pick it up. Might be a tough test. Denver held Dallas running back Zeke Elliott to eight yards on nine carries last week. Can Shady defy the odds?'

Marker Kiszla: There’s old friend of the Broncos lurking in Buffalo, itching to ruin Denver’s 2 [1:47 AM]
Denver Post reports: 'Well, this much we know is true about Dennison: He’s unafraid to win ugly. As fans in Broncos Country know all too well, Dennison will dial down the pace until an NFL game becomes little more than an excuse for a nap on the sofa. While new Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is more apt to draw up a play in the dirt than to strictly follow a script, Dennison is an engineer that prefers the sweat equity of a one-brick-at-time grind.'

Marker Broncos prepare for Bills' ground stampede of LeSean McCoy, Tyrod Taylor [1:46 AM] reports: '"'Shady' [McCoy] is probably one of the more electrifying backs going back to Barry Sanders," said Broncos Defensive Coordinator Joe Woods. "He is a daylight runner, meaning he may start off to the A gap one side, and end up on the sideline on the other side."'

Marker Bills' McCoy vows to find his stride against Broncos [1:45 AM]
AP reports: '"In this league, you've got to deal with it. Too much complaining. Too many excuses," McCoy said, shouldering the blame for being held to 9 yards on 12 rushes — a career low for a game in which he has more than seven carries — in a 9-3 loss to the Panthers.'

Marker Week 3 GameScout: Broncos at Bills [1:44 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Broncos, 31-21.'

Marker Bills get Glenn, Lawson back at practice [1:43 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Lawson suffered a nerve contusion in his foot in Sunday’s 9-3 loss to the Panthers, but both he and head coach Sean McDermott indicated they are confident he will play Sunday. Glenn is dealing with an injured foot. Both players were held out of practice Wednesday.'
