Buffalo Bills News - November 5, 2001

Marker Johnson hears Bills fans' boos [5:32 AM]
Hamilton Spectator reports: 'Rob Johnson is back as the favourite whipping boy of Buffalo Bills fans.'

Marker Bills take big step back [5:31 AM]
D and C reports: '"Today we played an opponent that knows us better than those other teams (San Diego and Jacksonville) did. They had our number all day. I feel bad for the fans. It's tough for them to keep coming back to the games and cheering. We played terrible. It was awful."'

Marker Bills need to do their share for fans' sake [5:30 AM]
D and C reports: 'They are inept on offense thanks to a woefully undermanned and overmatched offensive line and a quarterback who just can't get over the hump and maintain a steady climb on the progress meter. They are just average on defense which is a nice way of saying they play well occasionally, but ultimately, their good plays are hidden by killer mistakes that cannot be overcome. And on special teams, it's a complete crap shoot. Nate Clements returns a punt 66 yards for a touchdown, but the protection breaks down for the second week in a row and Jake Arians has another field goal blocked.'

Marker Bills lose momentum, home mystique [5:29 AM]
D and C reports: 'They went up in flames, losing 30-14, Buffalo's fourth home loss this season and sixth in a row. If this is home cooking, someone needs to check the cook's I.D.'

Marker Ex-center Hull winces as offensive line collapses [5:28 AM]
D and C reports: '"A lot of people say give up on Rob, but I think he has great skills and he's tough as hell," he said. "They just got to get that line fixed, and that ain't going to happen overnight."'

Marker Buffalo Bills report card [5:27 AM]
D and C reports: 'Guess three inspired performances out of Rob Johnson was too much to expect. Had a chance to win more support before the home fans but instead gave his critics more fuel. Played behind another horrid line combination but that's a given these days. The Bills need more out of their $5 million man. Johnson was listless, his passes were off the mark for three quarters and two fumbles after sacks led to 10 Colts' points.'

Marker Smothering defense defines win over Bills [5:26 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'Quarterback Rob Johnson was the primary recipient of the wave of aggression. He absorbed six sacks, lost two fumbles that set up Colts scores and was totally inept until mop-up time late in the fourth quarter.'

Marker Colts defense turns up pressure [5:25 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'By halftime, Johnson had one less pass completion in nine attempts than he had suffered sacks.'

Marker No one saw Manning's TD run coming [5:24 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: '"The linemen were all like, 'What? What?' " said Bills defensive end Phil Hansen, who was on the other side, where the play was supposed to go. "We were all in a pile looking for the ball."'

Marker Colts back where they belong [5:23 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'Granted, Buffalo is awful, Rob Johnson has the pocket presence of a cellist, and the so-called West Coast offense is so inept, Bill Walsh is considering a lawsuit for defamation of offense.'

Marker Rhodes loves fulfilling dream with Colts [5:17 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'Rhodes ran against the Buffalo Bills with an inner drive we thought only existed in Edgerrin James, the Colts' star running back who grew up tossing watermelons onto the backs of trucks.'

Marker James' uncertain status kept Bills guessing [5:11 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'The Colts included James in their weekend travel entourage, but were pretty sure he would spend his time at Ralph Wilson Stadium lounging on the sideline. They did not deactivate him until 90 minutes prior to kickoff.'

Marker Colts-Bills report card [5:09 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'I don't mean to question the wisdom of the men who chose Rob Johnson over Doug Flutie, but, well, WHAT WERE YOU PEOPLE THINKING?'

Marker Colts 30, Bills 14 [6:16 PM]
AP reports: 'Manning, who passed for 421 yards in Indianapolis' 42-26 win over Buffalo earlier this season, didn't come close to matching that dominating performance. Then again, he didn't need to.'

Marker Indianapolis 30, Buffalo 14 [6:15 PM]
Sportsticker reports: 'It wasn't as bad as last time, but it was still pretty bad for the Buffalo Bills.'

Marker Hull, Tasker honored Sunday [9:32 AM] reports: 'This Sunday before the Bills host the Indianapolis Colts, the team will honor two alumni with the Ralph C. Wilson Distinguished Service Award, as Kent Hull and Steve Tasker will be awarded for their outstanding service to the team in a special pre-game ceremony.'

Marker Rob Johnson press conference [9:32 AM] reports: "We didn't play very well against them last time. Defensively we didn't play well, and offensively we didn't play well against them. We had 19 penalties, we killed ourselves, we've got to play better, and I think we'll improve offensively. This is a good week for us to keep improving, we're getting healthier and I'm not sure if we'll get Jerry [Ostroski] back, but it'll be nice to get him back and some other guys back in there."

Marker Gregg Williams press conference [9:30 AM] reports: "It's in that area, but it's nothing as severe as the people who have that separation or break or tear in that area. It's just a sprain, and it's really not that severe as [Washington Redskin rookie Jauron Dailey]. He's got numerous bumps and bruises as a number of quarterbacks have at this time of year, but he's ready to answer the bell."

Marker Bills 'D' to Colts: Not again [8:42 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The good news for the Bills is they have showed improvement. They only have allowed one pass play of 30 or more yards in the four games since. The bad news is the defense probably has to carry the load today.'

Marker Price adjustment [8:41 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Price produced four catches for 103 yards and a touchdown in the Oct. 7 loss to the New York Jets. He struck for eight catches, a career-high 151 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's agonizing defeat at San Diego. He's averaging 20.8 yards this season on 17 receptions, a flashback to when he was a feared big-play threat at the University of Tennessee.'

Marker Shootout on horizon despite Indy's injuries [8:38 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills are 0-3 at The Ralph and have lost five straight there since last year.

Marker Will the 'official supermarket of the Bills,' please line up? [8:34 AM]
Buffalo News reports: Look closely. You'll see Bills logos and other team accents on Wegmans' ads and in their stores, but not on Tops' ads. Tops can't mention that their commercials star Buffalo Bills players or have them wear anything with a Bills' logo because Wegmans' is the official supermarket of the Bills...However, Tops can sign up individual players...'.

Marker Colts, Bills rematch will be personal [5:50 AM]
AP reports: 'The Colts might be coming off a 35-28 victory over Kansas City, but the win didn't hide all of their blemishes. Their defence, ranked among the worst in the league, has yet to hold an opponent under 23 points.'

Marker Bills look to contain Colts [5:41 AM]
D and C reports: 'Five weeks ago, Manning had a career day against the Bills in one afternoon, passing for 421 yards and four touchdowns in the Colts' 42-26 victory at the RCA Dome. It wasn't so much WHAT Manning did but HOW he did it that agitates the Bills like sand in a swimsuit. During one stretch of the first half, Manning needed just six plays and 2:08 of possession time to complete three long TD passes to blow the game open.'

Marker Bills' players aren't afraid of fan mail [5:40 AM]
D and C reports: '"With the millions and millions of pieces of mail circulating in this country, I have to think 'Why would they target me?'" fullback Larry Centers said.'

Marker Q & A with Jake Arians [5:39 AM]
D and C reports: '''(At Jacksonville), I missed my first two kicks so you want to redeem yourself. Everybody had played so great, so you're thinking, 'OK, you missed two, if you want a job next week, you better knock this one down.' There's no way I could have missed that kick, because the team had played its heart out. At San Diego, the same thing. We fought our butts off and just fell short. I couldn't tell what happened (on the block). I hit it good and it came off my foot well. Everyone wanted to win that game so bad and Mr. Wilson (team owner Ralph) wanted it the most of all. I'm really sick we couldn't pull it out for him. I think he'd be proud of the effort and the grit we showed, but we're all disappointed."'

Marker Scouting report [5:38 AM]
D and C reports: 'Jerry Ostroski may return to action today, and if he does, the offensive line will get a boost. With that boost, it must give Johnson protection so he has a chance to peck away at the Colts.'

Marker Thoughts on the Bills and TV games [5:37 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Before today's game, two former Bills' stars - center Kent Hull and special teams ace Steve Tasker - will be honored with Ralph Wilson Distinguished Service Awards.'

Marker Colts offense wants to put an end to slow starts [5:34 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'In six games, the Colts have scored first only once, that occurring 10 days ago at Kansas City. An offense that ranks No. 1 in the NFL in total yards and No. 2 in scoring has tacked up just two first-quarter touchdowns. Both came Sept. 23 in the RCA Dome against the Bills. But both came after the Colts turned the ball over on their first two possessions of the game.'

Marker Hansen's toughness sets example for Bills [5:33 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'Hansen sets an example with tenaciousness. He's usually so focused, others find him amusing because of his blunt honesty. "I think that's probably why he and I get along so well," said first-year Bills coach Gregg Williams. "We're both that way."'
