Buffalo Bills News - August 24, 2004

Marker Remember It’s Only Preseason [12:42 PM] reports: 'The penalties were not as big of an issue as some people made them out to be.'

Marker Recent push lifts season-ticket base [10:17 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'Also, the Colts have made available several hundred additional single-game tickets for the eight regular-season home games, including the Sept. 26 home opener in the RCA Dome against Green Bay. The tickets had been held back for possible season-ticket sales. Fans wishing to purchase tickets for the Packers game still must buy a similarly-priced ticket for Saturday's preseason game with Buffalo.'

Marker Bledsoe, Warner among NFL's most overpaid [10:16 AM]
Fox Sports reports: 'Bledsoe's $8.75 million salary might rank in the bottom half among starting quarterbacks, but it's still big money for someone coming off the least-productive full season of his 11-year career.'

Marker Gildon's big test could come against the Colts [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"We need to get a better feel of how he's fitting in," Mularkey said. "We need to give him a chance. He hasn't gotten enough reps, and we'll probably do that more in this game."'

Marker The billboard [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills' offense ran no-huddle drills against a nickel package.'

Marker Healthy arm should improve Lindell's foot [5:23 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"You can certainly learn a lot of stuff, and every kick in a game is big, so it was a good experience that way," Lindell said. "But I definitely plan to be better."'

Marker Sidelined Henry stays patient while recovering from injury [5:22 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"To miss (practice and probably Saturday's game) is very disappointing, but there is no reason at all to rush back," he said. "If it was a regular season game and they needed me, I would be back."'

Marker Rain, Slippery Conditions Shorten Practice [9:19 PM] reports: '"I've been training the whole off-season to get to this point and to miss is disappointing," said Henry. "I know I have to get healthy and guys are looking for me to be ready for the opener."'

Marker Mularkey said Mistakes Contributed to Loss [9:18 PM] reports: '"They need to understand that when you play physical football the other team is probably going to retaliate and you've got to walk away and get back into the huddle," Mularkey said after his team fell to the Titans, 16-15. "I have not done a good job of stressing that."'

Marker Henry Day to Day [9:17 PM] reports: 'Coach Mike Mularkey may keep Henry out of this week's game against the Colts as a precaution. Willis McGahee worked with the first team and is in line to make his first NFL start this weekend.'

Marker Bills RB Henry out with bruised ribs; McGahee might start [9:12 PM]
AP reports: '``It's not official, but I'm not going to push him to play if there's any pain at all,'' Mularkey said. ``I'd maybe have a different answer if we were in the regular season. But I'm not going to push that right now. It's just to get him back full strength.'''

Marker Everybody take a deep breath now [5:12 PM]
Niagara Falls Reporter reports: 'The sight of Henry getting wheeled off the field during the second quarter, though, should wield greater impact on the thought process in the front office than any run or catch made by either back. X-rays showed his ribs to be only bruised, so he should be back on the field and in the midst of the media frenzy by mid-week, if not before.'

Marker Bills RB Henry misses practice [5:10 PM]
AP reports: 'Punter Brian Moorman also didn't practice. He missed Saturday's game with a strained left hamstring. Backup offensive lineman Marcus Price was also held out of practice. Price missed all of last week with a broken toe on his left foot.'

Marker Bills at Colts [1:00 PM] reports: 'The Colts have won the past five meetings, tying their series-longest winning streak that was achieved on two prior occasions (1970-72, 1975-77).'

Marker Bills, Jags have something in common [12:56 PM]
Business First of Buffalo reports: 'Buffalo and Jacksonville will meet in the opening game of the NFL regular season at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday, September 12, but the two teams have at least one other thing in common - their airline.'

Marker Bledsoe's ticking clock is cause for alarm [12:49 PM]
Providence Journal reports: 'A training aid more absurd than the Drew Bledsoe "Get Rid of It, Drew!" (aka "The GRID") alarm clock has yet to be invented.'

Marker Bills take a special look at starters [12:40 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Meanwhile, a week ago, starting wide receiver Josh Reed averaged 29 yards on two kickoffs. And Saturday night, cornerback Terrence McGee, very likely to fill the nickel position which is the next best thing to starting, returned two kickoffs for an average of 55 yards, including an 85-yarder. And while he hasn’t gotten a great deal of game work, starting corner Nate Clements looks to be Buffalo’s regular-season punt returner. Plus, among the other first-teamers manning the Bills’ special teams is middle linebacker London Fletcher, a terror blocking in the wedge of the kickoff return team.'

Marker McGee impresses on kick returns [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"When (McGee) had his chances on the returns, he really hit the holes that were tight," coach Mike Mularkey said. "That's what you're looking for, especially on kickoff returns, a guy who's not afraid to hit the hole. You don't want anybody back there looking for it. If it's there, go."'

Marker Henry sore, but he's been hurt worse [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's the same thing that happened to me when we played against Miami, but it looks like it's going to be OK," Henry said. "This isn't nearly as bad as last year. I'm breathing a lot better and moving around a lot better."'

Marker Henry injury could open door for McGahee start [5:29 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'In this cut-throat business, Henry's injury comes at a good time for McGahee, who will get more repetitions with the first team.'

Marker McGee turns heads with returns [5:28 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'McGee returned three kickoffs for a total of 136 yards, including an 85-yarder near the end of the first half that set up the only Bills touchdown. "The team was the one making the holes for me, I just had to go through them," McGee said. "It was easy."'

Marker Big problem is Bledsoe, not running backs [5:27 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Travis Brown has shown little to suggest that he'd be an improvement over Bledsoe. For all of his athletic ability, rookie J.P. Losman clearly isn't ready to start for a playoff team in the NFL. He'd be exciting for as long as he could stay healthy, but he wouldn't win many games. If the 2004 Bills are going to make the playoffs, Bledsoe figures to be the QB taking them there.'

Marker Bickering Bills [5:26 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: 'The notion that they would hand the running game on a platter to McGahee, who ripped up his knee in the NCAA championship game 18 months ago, is absurd. McGahee, or at least his advisers, are showing lousy judgment. This is the NFL, where a team can go through running backs faster than the ambulances can cart them away; where today's backup is tomorrow's starter. And given the bruised ribs Henry sustained on Saturday, it makes no sense to deal McGahee.'

Marker Inside slant [5:05 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'Forget multi-million dollar tackles and guards when a $49 alarm clock will do.'

Marker Strategy and personnel [5:04 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'Denney made a statement coming into the game for a fourth-and-one play at the Bills 7-yard line, nailing ex-Bill Antowain Smith for no gain with help from safety Izell Reese. With two preseason games left, Denney still has the nod to start but it appears this will be more of a rotation position than anything.'

Marker Notes, quotes [5:03 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'QB Drew Bledsoe wasn't feeling too good about the pass he threw to RB Travis Henry against Tennessee. It was behind Henry, who reached back and exposed himself to a full-force blast from LB Keith Bulluck. "I probably should've given him the ball a little bit sooner, either that, or taken it and run it myself," said Bledsoe, who was running to his right.'

August 22, 2004

Marker Titans deliver big hits [9:03 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I thought we did some good things," Bledsoe said. "We came out against what's a very good defense and moved the ball. We ran the ball effectively against them and had time to throw it in the passing game. We were dropping back and getting it out quick. . . . We would have liked to put it in the end zone. We had a couple of chances. We still had too many penalties."'

Marker Donahoe tries to defuse RB controversy [9:02 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"We've been trying to make it clear, but obviously we're not doing a good job of it because it keeps coming up," Donahoe said. "We have no control over what outside sources say. We do have control of what our people say and what our players say. We understand, Travis understands and Willis understands that it's a team game. It's not strictly about Travis or Willis. We're going to need all the players we can get to have a successful year."'

Marker Titans' Brown rolls up rushing yardage [9:02 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's real satisfying to run the ball as well as we did (Saturday)," said Brown. "We need to clean up a couple of things and we will be OK."'

Marker Only one way to end the controversy: trade Henry [9:01 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'So why wait?'
