Buffalo Bills News - August 9, 2001

Marker Rob Johnson press conference (8/9) [8:17 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: On what he wants to accomplish Sunday: "Hopefully a couple of touchdown drives. I want to go in there, go through my reads, play sharp and keep everyone healthy."

Marker Bills under the heat in Pittsford [8:15 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: With the heat this morning, linebacker Sam Cowart left practice with what coach Gregg Williams described as having "his back tightened up a little bit, and [he] got hot just from the heat." He added, "Just for precaution, we said back off a little bit and you’ll be fine."

Marker Whitman: From tight end to full back [8:14 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: 'Bills rookie Josh Whitman has been presented with some interesting changes in his first training camp for the pros. With the trade of tight end Bobby Collins to Green Bay, more opportunities are knocking for hopeful rookies such as Whitman and Notre Dame's Dan O'Leary. Whitman is keeping cool with all the competition on the practice field though.'

Marker Cowart's success tempered by tragedy [8:02 PM]
AP reports: 'Sam Cowart, the Buffalo Bills hard-hitting middle linebacker, has a soft spot for his big sister Lashawn. Her tragic death, she was gunned down by a disgruntled boyfriend in 1989, is a big reason Cowart is where he is today -- coming off his first Pro Bowl season and considered one of the game's emerging best at his position.'

Marker Back spasms down Cowart [8:01 PM]
AP reports: 'Although his back remains stiff and he's not sure if he'll practice on Friday, Cowart said it's nothing that would have kept him out of a regular season game.'

Marker Who Are These Guys? [1:24 PM]
TBD reports: Early into the opening series of last Saturday's Buffalo Bills scrimmage vs Cleveland Browns at Edinboro, it hit me like an anvil landing on Wiley Coyote.  For the first time in 15 years I could not recognize the majority of the players donning Bills jerseys.  Never mind picking out the faces out of the media guide, we are talking about simple matching of names to the jersey numbers.

Marker Bills welcome new faces to camp [1:19 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: "It started to look like [I would be moved]," Bowens said. "They drafted Jamal Reynolds, and the practice times and reps I was getting were getting reduced. I kind of thought there would be a change of scenery sooner or later, but I was happy it was sooner."

Marker Bills add to roster [1:17 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: Allen was in Bills 1999 training camp and saw action in preseason. Recently he spent the last year playing in the Arena Football League for the Buffalo Destroyers, where he played in 7 of 24 games and had 8 touchdowns for a total of 371 yards (15.5 avg.).

Marker Buffalo shuffles around under the heat [1:16 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: "We had an opportunity to improve the organization and the team, we had some depth at tight end," Williams said, comparing the situation to Buffalo's moves on Draft day. "The same thing [happened] when this came about a few days ago prior to the scrimmage, because of our depth at tight end and [Green Bay's] lack of depth. We posed back to being able to get another pass rusher in here, and it worked out for both of us that way.'

Marker Williams learns at camp [1:14 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: "Camp is actually tougher than I thought it would be, but I would rather be taking the pain right now and enjoy the benefits later," he said. Williams has his teammates and enthusiastic coaching staff to keep him going on the field in the scorching heat. "Coach Williams is a great motivator. When he notices our performance on the field it really makes us work even harder."

Marker Full-team autograph session scheduled for Friday [12:12 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: Entire squad will be available for autographs following practice which runs from 4:00-5:45 PM on Friday.

Marker Ex-Bill Bobby Collins already practing with Packers [11:46 AM]
USA Today reports: Packers: Bobby Collins ran his route and barely saw the ball from Brett Favre before it hit him in the numbers and ricocheted to the grass. Welcome to Green Bay, kid. Collins, traded from Buffalo on Tuesday for defensive end David Bowens, must adjust to Favre's strength.

Marker Jennings making waves for starting spot [9:12 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Finding a starter at right tackle was a point of emphasis for the Bills going into this summer. Midway through their second full week of camp, the issue remains unresolved.'

Marker Newcomers Bowens and Allen practice [9:10 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Defensive end David Bowens, obtained from the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday for tight end Bobby Collins, passed his physical and was on the field for the afternoon practice at St. John Fisher. Also joining the afternoon practice was wide receiver Reggie Allen, a free agent from Central Michigan.'

Marker Centers eyes idea of coaching career [5:16 AM]
D and C reports: 'However, the fullback saw a two things in Buffalo that no one else could offer: The chance to play in an offense that will utilize his pass-catching skills and to get a headstart on a coaching career Centers may pursue when his playing days end.'

Marker Referees also in pre-season mode [5:15 AM]
D and C reports: 'New Bills Coach Gregg Williams is taking full advantage of Carroll, a field judge in his seventh NFL season; Bob Wagner, an umpire in his 17th; Doug Rosenbaum, a side judge in his first year; and Tom Johnson, a head linesman in his 20th season. Also in camp is Jim Poole, who worked two Super Bowls during his 21 years as an official and who now trains officials for the league.'

Marker Conaty takes charge of line [5:14 AM]
D and C reports: '"When I first got here and studied all the film, I noticed that there was a lot more communicating going on when Bill was in there and and there were fewer technical scheme errors," Williams said. "He's a very bright center and he was able to get them to play better as a unit."'

Marker Bowens gets in his first practice [5:12 AM]
D and C reports: '"I'm going to have to learn on the run, but I'm going to do the best I can to get in the classroom and learn everything I can as quick as possible," he said.'

Marker Bowens in training camp [8:48 PM]
AP reports: 'David Bowens arrived at the Buffalo Bills training camp Wednesday, passed a physical and expressed hope that his third NFL team in three years would be his last stop for a while.'

Marker Bills seek returns after signing Allen [8:46 PM]
AP reports: 'The Buffalo Bills, still searching for a kick returner, signed free agent wide receiver Reggie Allen on Wednesday. Allen spent this past year with the Buffalo Destroyers of the Arena Football League, where he set a franchise record with 208 yards on returns in one game. This is Allen's second stint with the Bills after he was cut prior to the start of the 1999 season.'

Marker Johnson dislikes SI's illustration [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Almost from the time Rob Johnson arrived in Buffalo, he has been fighting an unflattering image that he is nothing more than a California pretty boy masquerading as a quarterback. And, in his mind, a recent article in Sports Illustrated has done nothing to help that image.'

Marker Internet advocate [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"Since our relaunch . . . the Bills have made a statement that they believe in the Internet. They have committed to it 100 percent," she said. "Without the cooperation of upper management - our head coach, our president and general manager, even (owner) Ralph Wilson does chats and Q&A sessions - without their cooperation nothing will work."'

Marker Bowens obtained to bolster defensive line [9:03 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'This is the second time the 6-foot-2, 270-pound Bowens has been traded in his two-year career. He was a fifth-round draft pick in 1999 out of Western Illinois University by Denver, where he played eight games as a rookie. He was traded to the Packers last year, played 11 games and recorded 48 tackles and four sacks in 14 games.'

Marker Bills a bad memory for Flutie [6:09 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: '"I always felt in Buffalo that when I performed well, it created more problems, which was amazing to me," Flutie said yesterday. "The better I played, the more problems it caused."'

Marker Bowens traded for TE [5:43 AM]
Green Bay Press Gazette reports: '"The defense that we're trying to put together, there's always a need for guys who can get up the field, and we feel David Bowens has that kind of ability."'

Marker Bowens traded for tight end [5:40 AM]
Green Bay News Chronicle reports: 'Sherman said trading Bowens, 24, was a difficult decision, but one he had to make. "He's well-liked by the players and the coaches," Sherman said, "but we have an immediate need at tight end."'

Marker Packers trade Bowens to Bills for tight end [5:38 AM]
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports: '"He's just not quite big enough to play every snap but Buffalo is using Tennessee's system and they can get by with a little lighter guys," Hatley said. "I think David will do a nice job for them. He's got pass rush, a good motor and for a big guy he can play on special teams, which is hard to find."'

Marker Another tough read for Rob [5:33 AM]
D and C reports: '"They made me do some stupid stuff," he said. "It's kind of like they suggest something that's really bad, like sitting in my bed. And then they get me to sit in the hot tub, so that's not as bad as sitting in my bed."'

Marker Bills deal for defensive end [5:32 AM]
D and C reports: '"They called us first," said Donahoe. "They've had some problems with the health of their tight ends so they came to Edinboro to watch the scrimmage and we had some conversations with them after the scrimmage."'

Marker Many arms, little experience [5:32 AM]
D and C reports: 'Now you know why the Buffalo Bills have placed a priority on keeping Rob Johnson healthy. If Johnson is hurt again, the team could be in very serious trouble, because their quarterback depth chart isn't very deep.'
