Buffalo Bills News - February 23, 2015

Marker Top 5 Bills notes form the Combine [1:54 AM] reports: 'Though the Bills are encouraged by young tight end talents on their roster like Chris Gragg and Marqueis Gray, the demand for numbers at the tight end position by Greg Roman’s offense will require Buffalo to increase the total on their offseason roster. Whether that’s accomplished through free agency or the draft is the question.'

Marker Bills turn their focus to tight ends [1:09 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'How will they go about getting one? The first option is the free-agent market, which opens March 10. The Bills are known to be taking a hard look at one possible free agent from the AFC East, Charles Clay of the Miami Dolphins.'

Marker As usual, Bills have dilemma in search for quarterback [1:08 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'So now you're talking about midround guys like Bryce Petty, Brett Hundley and Garrett Grayson, which prompted NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock to say, "I don't think it's a great quarterback class, and most of them are projections."'

Marker Chris Mortensen's 5 thoughts on the Bills [1:07 AM] reports: '“Having a dominant defense is great,” Mortensen told host John Murphy. “Jim Schwartz did a terrific job. Obviously they have talent on that side of the ball. Offensive line--that will get fixed. Greg Roman is known for that Ground and Pound, and that’s a nice, tricky catch phrase, but you still need a quarterback.”'

Marker Bills willing to offer second chances to some [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“I’m not a person that believes if you make one mistake in this world you should be thrown away and cast out on an island,” Whaley said. “I know a lot of people judge people that way, but I know this: There has been nobody perfect in this world except one.'

Marker Hall of Famer Smith recounts Bills' legacy [1:58 AM]
Johnson City Press reports: '“I just look at it as a missed opportunity,” the Hall of Fame defensive end said. “If the kick is two yards to the left, we’re Super Bowl champions. Unfortunately, the kick fell to the right and we lose the game by a point. But, I’m not one that dwells on the what ifs. I’m one that looks at the positive side of things, especially winning the AFC Championship for four straight years and being one of six Hall of Famers who represent the greatest players in NFL history.”'

Marker Bills' Brown relives combine experience [1:57 AM]
TSN reports: '“They really train you for everything at the combine. From the Wonderlic to the interviews; everything,” Brown said. “How you dress, you have to go in there and dress a certain way. You try to impress the whole time that you’re there because everybody’s watching you as soon as you step in there.”'

Marker Bills making a push to sign Hughes [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills could place a franchise tag on him, but are unlikely to do so because it would mean a guaranteed one-year contract worth roughly $14 million, which would take too large a bite out of their salary cap.'

Marker Possibility of losing Spiller has Whaley sizing up running backs [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“It’s deep. It’s one of those classes that we’re excited about,” Whaley said. “In the draft altogether, there’s some value in rounds 2 to 5 that you’re going to get some guys who will make an impact in this league.”'

Marker Whaley: Bills trying to bring back Hughes, Spiller [1:57 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Asked whether the franchise tag is in play, which would cost about $14.8 million based on the NFL average of the top five salaries at that position, Whaley said, "We're trying to avoid that because we're trying to get him long-term for sure and keep everybody on the same page so they felt like, 'Hey, we got a good deal,' and we say as the Buffalo Bills, 'We got a good deal.'"'

Marker Rex Ryan busy at NFL Scouting Combine [1:56 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"This time of year is exciting for me," Ryan said. "This will really be my first time of watching them compete and then actually to get to know them. Excited about those interviews; we'll see how it goes."'

Marker 5 things we learned from Rex Ryan at the the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine [1:55 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'New Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman got a ringing endorsement from his old co-worker, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. When asked about the 49ers' offensive struggles last season, Baalke said it was out of Roman's control and said he should have a bright future.'

Marker 7 notes from NFL Scouting Combine Q&A with Bills GM Doug Whaley [1:54 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'Here are some of the highlights from Whaley's chat.'

Marker Rex Ryan refuses to take shot [1:53 AM]
Boston Herald reports: 'So, when given the chance to address the Patriots’ Super Bowl victory against the Seahawks, Ryan at least tried to have some fun with it before clamming up and complimenting the only team that has won the AFC East during Ryan’s six-season tenure in the division.'

Marker Richie Incognito not best start for Rex Ryan's reboot of Buffalo Bills [1:52 AM]
New York Daily News reports: 'Maybe he will eventually turn the Bills into the bullies of the AFC East for the first time since the early 1990s, but bringing in an aging offensive lineman of questionable character isn’t how he’s going to do it. The Bills need much more help at more important positions. So if Ryan is going to duplicate the early success he had with the Jets during his tenure in Buffalo, he’s going to have to do better than just that.'

Marker Pats Still The Enemy To Rex Ryan [1:51 AM]
AP reports: '“They are the world champs, so you want to beat them,'' he said. ``If you’re going to beat one, you want it to be the world champions. Obviously, we’ve got a lot of ground to make up.”'

Marker The Essentials: What we learned from Bills GM Doug Whaley at the Combine [1:50 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'What were the biggest takeaways from the 11-minute conversation? The need-to-know information...'.

Marker Bills and Hughes working to stay together [1:49 AM] reports: '“We’ve sent a proposal over to his representatives. His representatives have sent a counterproposal. I just got off the phone with Jim Overdorf, who talked with their representatives at length last night,” said Whaley. “There’s an open line of communication. I haven’t met with J.O. yet to see how close we are or if we’re close at all. I’ll meet with him soon.”'

Marker Bill Polian says it's time for the Bills to shine again [1:48 AM] reports: '“Pretty close. Pretty close,” Polian admits. “In the end, it was not something that the family felt I should do. At this stage of my life, I had to abide by their wishes. But I came away immensely impressed with the Pegulas, with their commitment to the franchise, with their understanding of the business of professional sports. They’re going to get it right.”'

Marker Rex using coaching staff as selling point [1:47 AM] reports: '“I’m excited about our coaching staff,” said Ryan flatly. “I think that’s the probably the best selling point that I have right now along with the players that we have. Obviously we have an outstanding group of players too that I like to show off to a lot of guys.”'

Marker Bills meeting with Spiller's representatives [1:46 AM] reports: '“(Senior VP of Football Administration) Jim Overdorf, (President) Russ Brandon and (Contract Administrator) Kevin Meganck are meeting with his representation right here at the combine,” Whaley said. “We’re hoping we can close the gap and get the deal done.”'

Marker John Clayton sees the Bills as a 2015 Wild Card contender [1:45 AM] reports: '“When you look at the Bills draft the last couple of years, that’s all been solid,” he said. “The key to the NFL since 2011 is getting two and three starters out of each draft. This team has been doing that. This team has been able to get good defensive players, starting with Marcel Dareus in 2011. With Aaron Williams. With Stephon Gilmore and guys like that. You look at the talent base and it’s there. That defense didn’t finish as high as it did because it was just lucky. It was good.”'

Marker Bills weighing all options for QBs [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“I think, in an ideal world, you’d have a veteran quarterback with a young quarterback,” Ryan said Wednesday during a gathering with Western New York media at the NFL Scouting Combine. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that, whether it’s a young guy starting, a veteran backup, or vice versa. But we’ll see how it shakes out. I know we’re going to try to upgrade that position, if you will, or add to that position, certainly, any means necessary. So we’ll see."'

Marker Ryan comfortable with Incognito [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“I think the first thing is, I’ve” coached “against Richie Incognito, and I know he’s an outstanding player,” Ryan said Wednesday during the first of multiple gatherings with the media at the NFL Scouting Combine. “If he wasn’t an outstanding player, would I have had the conversation with him? No. The truth of the matter is, no. But knowing what kind of player he is, we wanted to find out for ourselves where he’s at and have a conversation with him.”'

Marker Special teams: Keeping Easley would help coverage units [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Crossman makes no apologies about the fact that he is downright begging General Manager Doug Whaley and the rest of the Bills’ hierarchy to keep Easley, whose salary shouldn’t be all that expensive, relatively speaking. As an exclusive-rights free agent, Gay doesn’t figure to go anywhere, especially after his ability to consistently boom kickoffs deep. But will Ryan be as enthusiastic about tying up a roster spot with a kickoff specialist as his predecessor, Doug Marrone, was?'

Marker Lesson to be learned for Incognito [1:56 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: 'I read the accounts of bullying that got you suspended from the NFL, but I don’t know what really went on except for what I’ve read. Whatever occurred, a lot of people seem willing to give you a second chance. So I’m going to imagine you learned a powerful lesson and that you are really grateful to be given a new opportunity to use the physical and mental gifts with which you have been blessed.'

Marker Rex Ryan on Bills' signing of Richie Incognito: 'I'm confident good things will happe [1:55 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"He's an outstanding player," Ryan said. "If he wasn't an outstanding player would I have had the conversation with him? No."'

Marker Rex Ryan talks about quarterback position, New England Patriots at NFL Scouting Combine [1:54 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'It was "terrible" watching the Patriots win the Super Bowl. And on catching the Patriots: "Obviously we have a lot of ground to make up."'

Marker Rex Ryan says Buffalo Bills would like to have C.J. Spiller back in 2015 [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"We'd certainly like to have him back and remain a Buffalo Bill," Ryan said. "He's a talented guy. I would think that he would want to do that, being in this kind of system, seeing the success that other backs have had in this kind of system. But we'll see how it works out, also recognizing that, the NFL, sometimes you're not always able to keep the guys you really want."'

Marker Buffalo Bills aren't the only suitor for free agent quarterback Josh McCown [1:52 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith gave a glowing endorsement on McCown as a locker room presence but said it was best for the two sides to move on. Last offseason, McCown was the most sought-after free agent quarterback on the market. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported that McCown has at least one more visit planned in Indianapolis this week.'
