Buffalo Bills News - April 19, 2017

Marker Buffalo Bills projected 2017 schedule: Who will the Bills face in season opener? [1:48 AM]
Auburn Citizen reports: 'We also don't know when the Bills' bye week will be. Last year, the Bills had a Week 10 bye week. It'd be a safe bet to say it will be earlier in 2017.'

Marker AP Source: Patriots sign Bills RB Gillislee to offer sheet [1:47 AM]
AP reports: 'The Bills lack experienced depth behind Gillislee, though veteran fullback Mike Tolbert could fill that role. Buffalo signed Tolbert and fullback Patrick DiMarco in free agency last month.'

Marker Patriots sign Bills RB Mike Gillislee to two-year offer sheet [1:46 AM]
ESPN reports: 'If the Bills decline to match Gillislee's offer, it is unlikely the Patriots will re-sign free-agent running back LeGarrette Blount, who led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns, which was the highest total in the NFL since Adrian Peterson had 18 in 2009. He was the Patriots' top power running back, totaling 1,161 yards on 299 carries in the regular season.'

Marker Everything you need to know about the Mike Gillislee situation [1:45 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Right now, Gillislee is counting $1.8 million against the Bills salary cap for 2017. If they match, it will cost them roughly $2.2 million more, leaving them with approximately $8.6 million in cap space. They’ll need to have about $3.5 million available for drafted rookies, leaving about $5 million to sign veteran free agents for the rest of the offseason.'

Marker Bills plan to reveal if they have plan [1:44 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'The Bills should be able to find an immediate good starter at either wide receiver, tight end, tackle, defensive line, linebacker, cornerback or safety. These are all positions where they could use help.'

Marker Report: Patriots offer RFA Gillislee two-year deal [1:43 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'By loading money into the first year, New England could be looking to put the Bills into a predicament in the salary cap. Buffalo has around $10.8 million in cap space, which included their RFA tender for Gillislee. An entire rookie class would need about $6 million to be signed, which would leave Buffalo in a tough spot in the event they match the Gillislee offer sheet.'

Marker Why such a hubbub about Mike Gillislee? [1:42 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'I just don’t feel the need to pay a backup running back an average of $3.2 million a year while paying my starter, LeSean McCoy $8 million next season. In addition, we’re talking about a running back. Unless we’re discussing McCoy, who is a special breed of player, the running back position can be filled easily. Even more so when you’re talking about a backup running back who will probably get about 100 carries next season.'

Marker Bills RB Gillislee signs offer sheet with Patriots [1:41 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'The Bills now have five days to match the Gillislee offer sheet. If they do not, due to the restricted free agent tender the Bills issued to the running back, the Patriots would owe them a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Patriots currently have two fifth-round picks, possessing 163rd and 183rd overall in this year's draft.'

Marker 5 OTs Bills should consider on Day Two [1:40 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'So, who are some names to know if the Bills do end up passing on a right tackle in the first round? Five of my favorites in this year’s class past Utah’s Garrett Bolles, Wisconsin’s Ryan Ramczyk, and Alabama’s Cam Robinson...'.

Marker Six things to watch for at Bills voluntary veteran minicamp this week [1:39 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '“These first two weeks were just lifting, running and learning,” Thomas said last week, in an appearance on The John Murphy Show. “This week is when you touch the field and that intensity will go up a couple of decibels. And the coaching staff will really get the first look at what you do. Especially in veteran minicamp with a first time coaching staff.”'

Marker Bills Today: Cardale gets a grip [1:38 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '“Cardale the biggest change we made was this year,” said Christensen. “I put up with it last year with him because I saw he would fight it. There were times when he would miss and he would miss ugly. The problems was he was gripping the ball wrong, and I showed him how to grip the ball properly and explained why. And he told me, ‘Oh I’ve been gripping the ball like that my whole life. I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.’'

Marker Bills bring in Chad Kelly for pre-draft visit [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Kelly recently underwent surgery to repair an acute rupture of a ligament between two bones in his right (throwing) wrist, USA Today reported. He is expected to be unable to throw for three months.'

Marker Bills host Temple QB Walker for pre-draft visit [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'In 49 career games for the Owls, Walker has completed 830 of 1,458 passes for 10,688 yards and 74 touchdowns, with 44 interceptions. His passer rating was 129.1.'

Marker Bucky Gleason's Power Take: Bills' other needs shouldn't hinder search for QB [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Does that mean they should target a QB in the first round? No. It means they shouldn’t suspend their search for one in any round. Taylor could be gone a year from now. Teams win consistently because they unload and reload better than others. The Bills first need to load, particularly at QB.'

Marker Tim Graham's Power Take: Bills legends warm to new coach, not so much to incumbent GM [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Whether being paid to be ambassadors and speak well of the club or not, their unfiltered views have an impact in the Bills community. Their first impression of McDermott is the polar opposite of what some think of Whaley.'

Marker Vic Carucci's Bills Wake-Up Call: No need to compound risk with Watkins [1:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'McDermott also knows that Watkins is under contract for the 2017 season, which provides another year of gauging whether he finally has fully recovered from the foot problem that dates to last offseason. It offers ample time to see whether he can, in fact, remain healthy for an entire season while also figuring out if their woeful passing game makes the sort of strides that would inspire greater investment at receiver or quarterback, for that matter.'

Marker 3 reasons the Bills should draft: Alabama CB Marlon Humphrey [1:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Scouts love the body control Humphrey shows, beginning with the ability to quickly get out of his backpedal and effortlessly turn and run with receivers. He's able to play man or zone equally well, has great explosiveness and closing speed, and terrific ball skills. Humphrey first put himself on the athletic map by winning the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles at the 2013 World Youth Track & Field Trials.'

Marker NFL Draft 2017: Buffalo Bills 'very serious' about drafting QB at 10 (report) [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"What Cleveland's going to have to do now if they want Mitch Trubisky, I think they're going to have to hop over Buffalo," Breer said. "If Tyrod (Taylor) proves to be the long term answer there, you've got a great commodity sitting on your bench. It's like the Ron Wolf theory - when the (Packers) had Brett Favre, they kept drafting QBs - they'd draft one every year - Matt Hasslebeck, Aaron Brooks, Mark Brunell, Ty Detmer - they flipped all those guys for draft picks.'

Marker USC WR JuJu Smith-Schuster not a fan of Buffalo Bills' winter weather [1:52 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'As it turns out, Smith-Schuster has thought about playing for the Bills. The receiver started a Madden franchise and went to Buffalo. He told Sport Illustrated's Lindsey Schnell that he likes Buffalo's jerseys, quarterback and wide receiver. Unfortunately, Smith-Schuster was not a fan of Buffalo's weather. He eventually demanded a release from Buffalo due to the conditions.'

Marker 2017 NFL Draft: Could the Buffalo Bills trade up for UNC QB Mitchell Trubisky? [1:51 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"Let's talk through this. A billionaire businessman does not spend his weekends or free time traveling to college campuses to meet with 20 and 21 year olds for fun. This is for business and goes beyond being thorough. The Bills are taking the blueprint the Eagles laid out last year when trading up for a quarterback."'

Marker Buffalo Bills named best fit for UNC quarterback Mitchell Trubisky by MMQB [1:50 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"With Trubisky, the system will be especially crucial," said Benoit. "He is a better out-of-pocket talent than Cousins, but he still must be an offense's cog instead of its fulcrum. The complicating factor is that Trubisky is utterly inexperienced playing from under center; every snap he took at North Carolina was from shotgun. In today's NFL, about 60 percent of snaps are from shotgun. But teams whose systems tend to incorporate a quarterback rather than feature one do so by building their passing game off their running game. Which means their quarterback must play from under center."'

Marker Rumor Mill: Bills have 'strong interest' in Trubisky [1:49 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Trubisky has only started 1 year at North Carolina, so the sample size is small making him a risky pick so early. He also, does not have great awareness in the pocket or consistency throwing deep. However, physically and athletically he has the tools needed to be a quality NFL starting quarterback.'

Marker Why I don't buy the ‘Bills QB at 10' hype [1:48 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'Lastly, think about the information going out there… and why it’s going out there. Why would McDermott, who is running the show over in Orchard Park, suddenly soften his stance on information getting out there about his team, albeit two weeks before the most important event of their offseason? And when it comes to the most important position in the sport?'

Marker Could 15K retweets land a Bills fan a ride to prom? [1:47 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'Rather than meet halfway between Buffalo and Manchester, PA, Listenbee tweeted back if Zack gets 15,000 retweets, he might just pay for a "luxury rental..'

Marker Bills Today: Thomas on transition from QB to TE [1:46 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '“I had to learn a completely different set of ideals, a completely different verbiage, but it’s going very smoothly,” Thomas said. “Thankfully going from quarterback to tight end is a lot easier than going from tight end to quarterback.”'

Marker 3 reasons the Bills should draft: Ohio State CB Marshon Lattimore [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'He entered the NFL draft with two years of eligibility remaining. Having missed his entire freshman year after undergoing hamstring surgery and part of the 2015 season with a problem with his right hamstring, Lattimore has limited experience. But he showed last season that he has all of the physical tools – especially speed, flexibility, and change-of-direction skills – to soar to great heights at the next level.'

Marker Buffalo Bills host Temple QB Phillip Walker on pre-draft visit (report) [1:58 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'CBS Sports has Walker as their 39th ranked quarterback. Walker believed he'd be drafted following his pro day, but there's a good possibility that he's signed as an undrafted free agent following the draft.'

Marker Who will be available when the Bills draft? A look at the probabilities [1:57 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'What are the chances certain players will be available when the Bills are on the clock, presuming they stay at No. 10? Going by a general gauge of mock drafts and overall talent evaluations, here's a general consensus of what could be the top 40 players taken and the most likely scenarios...'.

April 16, 2017

Marker 3 reasons the Bills should draft: Utah OT Garett Bolles [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'He's surprisingly light on his feet for a man of his size. Bolles impresses scouts with his tremendous initial quickness. If he happens to be a little slow off the ball, which is rare, he can recover quickly. Bolles displays good balance and outstanding agility. In addition to his power and physical style of play, he's able to utilize his considerable leverage to move defenders off the ball.'

Marker Watch: Buffalo Bills QB Cardale Jones shows off cannon at Ohio State spring game [1:58 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Jones' arm strength was on display Saturday at Ohio State's spring game. The former Buckeye was on hand for the game and was asked to participate in a long distance throwing contest. Jones, as shown below, had no trouble showing off his arm in front of the Ohio State fans. Buffalo's backup quarterback ended up winning the contest by throwing the ball an incredible 66 yards downfield flat-footed.'
