Buffalo Bills News - November 12, 2001

Marker Many are taking hits for Johnson decision [5:47 AM]
Boston Globe reports: 'To prevent that condition from continuing, the Bills installed the West Coast offense in Buffalo this summer, hoping to help Johnson get rid of the ball quicker and hence reduce his sacks and his injuries. Unfortunately for the Bills, by then Buffalo's offense already had left for the West Coast.'

Marker Bledsoe may be set to go [5:46 AM]
Boston Globe reports: 'The Patriots are expected to announce within two days that quarterback Drew Bledsoe has been cleared by the medical staff to play Sunday night against the Rams.'

Marker Game will be Ram tough [5:45 AM]
Boston Globe reports: '''If we don't control the ball on offense and hold on to it, you don't want to put our defense in position to be on the field that long against that team. We're on a roll right now. It feels great to be over .500 finally, but we have to play better than we did [today]."'

Marker It wasn't too pretty, but Pats will take it [5:44 AM]
Boston Herald reports: '"We lacked the consistency we'd really like to have, but you have to recognize Buffalo (1-7) has a much better team than their record indicates," said the coach. "We've had games like this where we've had lapses and mistakes and lost. It's good to get one."'

Marker Corner breaks Mould [5:43 AM]
Boston Herald reports: 'Battling an All-Pro wide receiver mano-a-mano has always been a welcome challenge for Patriots cornerback Ty Law. Buffalo Bills wide receiver Eric Moulds, a two-time All-Pro, has resided in the top strata of the NFL's pass catchers since breaking into the league in 1996. Decision: Law.'

Marker Smith pads our account [5:42 AM]
Boston Herald reports: 'Shake the hand of the big man - Antowain Smith.'

Marker Brady takes his medicine [5:42 AM]
Boston Herald reports: 'For those interested in how the upstart quarterback came back to earth after impressively leading the Pats to a 4-2 record in relief of the injured Drew Bledsoe, Brady did not make excuses for a performance during which he was sacked seven times and fumbled twice.'

Marker Long day for Johnson [5:41 AM]
Boston Herald reports: '"We didn't help him out," said receiver Eric Moulds, referring in part to the Bills' continued propensity for penalties, especially in the red zone. "I told the guys that we have to help him out in some way. But we keep going backwards, and I don't know what it is. We don't have any identity as a team right now. And we haven't given Rob an opportunity to look over the defense the way he has to if we're going to have a chance."'

Marker Drew close to return [5:39 AM]
Boston Herald reports: 'The wind was a huge factor, and kicking the ball to the north end zone was hazardous, as Buffalo punter Brian Moorman (kicks of 12 and 20 yards) will attest. Pats kicker Adam Vinatieri, who came into the game having made 13-of-14 field goals, missed twice (from 43 and 45 yards) into the wind.'

Marker Cashing in on Bills [5:38 AM]
Providence Journal reports: 'Playing against a team that is just 1-7 on the season, the Pats did not make it easy on themselves. Their turnovers included two (one interception, one huge fumble late in the game) by quarterback Tom Brady. The seven penalties against the Pats cost them 75 yards. The injury-riddled offensive line yielded seven sacks. Adam Vinatieri missed field-goal attempts from 43 and 45 yards, one wide right, the other wide left. "Certainly, it was a game that we had mistakes," acknowledged Pats coach Bill Belichick.'

Marker Bills have momentum but it's all going downhill [5:37 AM]
Providence Journal reports: 'A one-time AFC powerhouse, the Bills have slowly slipped into a football world western New Yorkers aren't very familiar with. The Bills basically don't matter this year.'

Marker Pats' surging defense keys for major test against potent Rams [5:36 AM]
Providence Journal reports: 'The Pats had five sacks, giving them 14 in their last two games.'

Marker Pats over .500 constitutes real progress [5:35 AM]
Providence Journal reports: 'Even though they weren't all that good, they were good enough.'

Marker Smith found high gear when needed the most [5:34 AM]
Providence Journal reports: 'Smith enjoyed his day, no doubt about that. Not surprisingly, there were a lot of comments back and forth with some of his old friends during the course of the afternoon. "Yeah, they were saying, 'Not in here today . . . Don't run that stuff over here,' " Smith related. "Jay Foreman (linebacker) and Pat Williams (defensive line) were doing most of the talking." Did Smith talk back? "Of course," he said. "I can't let them think they've scared me. I just told them, 'I'll be back the next play all game long.'"'

Marker Wounded offensive line bands together [5:33 AM]
Providence Journal reports: 'When an NFL team allows seven sacks in a game, it normally means the offensive line had a bad day. It happened yesterday to the Patriots and, while no one was happy about it, no one was critical, either.'

Marker Smith Makes Bills Pay [5:32 AM]
Hartford Courant reports: '"I just kind of stayed away from all the hype," he said. "I didn't get caught up in the interviews back and forth and what the players have been saying in Buffalo. I didn't want to try to do too much. When you go out there and you try to do too much, you find yourself getting into trouble."'

Marker Ugly Win Looks Good [5:31 AM]
Hartford Courant reports: 'In winning five of their past seven games after an 0-2 start, the Patriots have played some beautiful games, replete with rousing end-around plays, double passes and Tom Brady touchdowns. This, however, was not one of them.'

Marker Bills QB injures shoulder, condition unknown [6:18 PM]
AP reports: 'Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold said Johnson would be checked when the team returns to Buffalo, either Sunday night or Monday.'

Marker Patriots 21, Bills 11 [6:17 PM]
AP reports: 'The Buffalo Bills could have used a couple of guys from last year's team -- Antowain Smith and Doug Flutie.'

Marker New England 21, Buffalo 11 [6:16 PM]
Sportsticker reports: 'Antowain Smith was released by the Buffalo Bills last May. On Sunday, he haunted them.'

Marker Bills dearly need a turnaround with turnovers [9:18 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills have taken the ball away from the opponent just six times in seven games, the lowest total of any of the NFL's 31 teams. In fact, the Bills are on pace to break the team record for fewest takeaways - 18 in 1986. (Not coincidentally, the Bills finished 4-12 in '86.)'

Marker Bills get first look at Patriots' QB Tom Brady [9:17 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Other than his fourth-quarter meltdown in Denver two weeks ago when he threw four interceptions in 10 passes, Brady has impressed with his poise and smooth direction of the offense. He appears to be the level-headed type who won't let momentary adversity affect him. It will be up to the Bills to try and rattle him.'

Marker Bills veteran Fina is not dead, but his career is fading away [9:16 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'It has taken its toll. Fina has reached the point where a player no longer expects to be fully healthy. He only hopes to be healthy enough to play. The veteran left tackle has played five games this season, essentially on one leg, and has struggled mightily at times.'

Marker Brady's success squeezes Belichick, Bledsoe [9:15 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick sounded a lot like Wade Phillips this past week in trying to deflect his quarterback controversy. What happens when Drew Bledsoe comes back from internal injuries he suffered in the second game of the season?'

Marker Top 40 [9:14 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills essentially handed Brandon a No. 2 pencil and asked him to paint like Picasso. Four years later, through his innovation and a staff increase from six to about 30, he has produced a masterpiece under the circumstances.'

Marker Chiefs, Bills have lost home-field edge [6:44 AM]
Dallas Morning News reports: 'It hasn't been close in Buffalo. The Bills have lost at home by 18 points to New Orleans, 17 points to Pittsburgh, 16 to Indy and six to the Jets. The Bills have not lost five games at home since 1986, and they still have dates at Rich Stadium this season with Miami and New England.'

Marker Bills aren’t playing for just a draft pick [6:15 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: '"We still want to want to win and we're going to do what we can to win," said Donahoe, Buffalo's president and general manager. "We have not decided this season is a wash...it's anything but a wash. "We have a lot of games left to play and we want to see if we can get more consistent. We're going to put our best people on the field and we're also going to continue the process of evaluating our team and some of our young guys." He added, with emphasis, "This team has not thrown in the towel. We don't expect (the players) to and we haven't as an organization. "We still feel there's going to be plenty of opportunity to get ourselves headed in the right direction, and to do that we've got to put our best people out on the field to give us a chance to win right now."'

Marker Bills-Patriots Preview [6:08 AM]
Springfield Union News reports: 'The Bills have survived offensively when teams have failed to mount a substantial pass rush. The Colts pressured by blitzing. The Patriots, who tend to do a little bit of everything and then emphasize what works, are clearly better when rookie nose tackle Richard Seymour is healthy. Even if Seymour does not make the sack, he pushes the center of the pocket - which makes life much harder for quarterbacks.'

Marker Patriots Have Pretty Good Argument [6:01 AM]
Hartford Courant reports: 'Who'd have thought that the talented Bledsoe being unable to play would be a godsend?'

Marker If Only Holmgren, Kraft Had Known [6:00 AM]
Hartford Courant reports: 'It won't happen now. If Tom Brady, 24, keeps playing the way he has, the Patriots will be left to ponder if they should trade the league's hottest young quarterback for a couple of first-round draft choices, or stake their future on Brady and figure out if there's a way to unload Bledsoe without taking a huge salary cap hit.'
