Buffalo Bills News - October 7, 2002

Marker 5th Down: Raiding the Other Locker Room [12:48 PM] reports: Some people think itís really cool to walk into an NFL locker room. Try walking into the visitorís quarters. Imagine taking an elementary school classroom, lining the walls and the middle of the room with locker stalls, and filling it with 53 extra-large sweaty men.

Marker Southern Comfort [12:32 PM] reports: Peter King in his MMQB column: "I think I wonder how long it's going to take before the NFL world figures out Drew Bledsoe. It's amazing. The Raiders picked him three times, but that defense had been playing pretty well, and the Bills rolled up 479 yards on Oakland, 417 from Bledsoe's right arm. Bledsoe has played five very-good-to-excellent games, and his deep arm looks like Dan Fouts' in his prime."

Marker High School Coach Of The Week - Week 5 [12:12 PM] reports: Head coach Willie Burnett of Turner-Carroll High School has been named the Buffalo Bills' high school football "Coach of the Week" for the fifth weekend of the 2002 season (Oct. 4-5). Burnett led his team to an impressive 26-6 victory over arch-rival St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute last Friday night at Johnny B. Wiley Pavilion in Buffalo.

Marker Seesaw stops with Raiders up, unbeaten [10:24 AM]
Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports: 'After blowing out their first three opponents, the Raiders played a team that may not have been their equal, but was certainly a worthy adversary.'

Marker Porter receiving attention [10:23 AM]
Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports: '"My role is (defined) by how the defenses play," Porter said. "If they want to double Jerry and Tim, then it's up to me to step up. Today, I had some single-coverage situations and I could step up."'

Marker Kennedy's substitute fills the bill [10:22 AM]
Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports: 'Walker, the 6-foot-8, 345-pound tackle out of Cal, held his blocks, made his assignments and didn't give up a sack.'

Marker Raiders outgun Bills for win [9:49 AM]
Oakland Tribune reports: 'Sunday was one of those old-fashioned AFL shootouts, between two AFL originals, the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders. And the Raiders had the last shot.'

Marker Old-gun Gannon proves he can still sling it [9:48 AM]
Oakland Tribune reports: 'Well, Bledsoe has been kicked out of only one NFL city. Gannon has been sent packing by four NFL teams, beginning with the Patriots, who drafted him in the fourth round in 1987 and got rid of him two weeks later. Gannon then played for Minnesota, Washington and Kansas City with such success that he didn't suit up for almost two full seasons.'

Marker Buchanon supplies game-breaker again [9:47 AM]
Oaklnd Tribune reports: 'Raiders tight end Roland Williams played his high school ball at East High in nearby Rochester and went on to star at Western New York's Syracuse University. Williams only had one catch for 14 yards, but he led the team in two other categories. Tickets supplied: 50. Wings bought: Two huge cases of Buffalo chicken wings for the team's drive bus ride to the airport.'

Marker Points galore add up to losing score [9:10 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Drew Bledsoe's passing statistics are spectacular ones. The defense's weekly yields are not.'

Marker Raiders take offense to Bills [9:09 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Bledsoe and his offensive mates traded punch for punch with the Raiders' Hall of Fame-caliber attack. But the Bills' defense once again proved it is not ready for prime time.'

Marker Oakland receivers run circles around Buffalo defenders [9:09 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills also are paying the price for playing two inexperienced players at safety with Wire and Prioleau. Both had coverage breakdowns that led to touchdowns.'

Marker Rookie's vision fatal to Bills [9:07 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I was just trying to read his eyes," Buchanon said. "I kind of read his eyes a little bit, and he kind of telegraphed it a little bit. You know, that's Drew Bledsoe. He can put it just about anywhere. Maybe he saw something different. I don't know. I was just trying to do my job."'

Marker Defenders can dance, but they can't stop anyone [9:06 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Raiders piled up 495 yards. They had 10 plays of 20 yards or more. Five of their touchdown drives took 2:12 or less. Those weren't drives. They were Olympic sprint relays.'

Marker Blazing-guns offense makes Raiders forget Gruden [9:06 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Raiders are hurting, all right. They're hurting every opponent that gets in their way.'

Marker Moulds, Price hit 100 yards again [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's always tough to swallow when you lose," Price added. "When you feel you've played well enough to win, it's even tougher."'

Marker Monday Billboard [9:04 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The teams combined for 974 yards and 80 points. They combined for 73 points after the first quarter. They had 512 yards before halftime. The over-under of 53 points was obliterated by the third quarter.'

Marker Unbeaten, unequaled [8:19 AM]
Sacramento Bee reports: 'As for history, the Raiders have never started 5-0 -- but get that chance Sunday at shockingly winless St. Louis.'

Marker Porter develops into another threat [8:17 AM]
Sacramento Bee reports: 'Playing most of the time as the slot receiver against Bills safeties Pierson Prioleau and Coy Wire, a rookie, the deceptively strong, 6-foot-2 Porter surpassed his career highs for receptions (six) and yardage (62), set Sept. 15 against Pittsburgh.'

Marker Rice looks merely mortal for a change [8:16 AM]
Sacramento Bee reports: '"They wanted to do a little roughhouse out there," Rice said. "I was taking shots from behind and to the head. I wanted to let them know I wasn't going to take it."'

Marker Raiders survive despite miscues [6:31 AM]
Contra Costa Times reports: '"It wasn't easy out there," Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon said. "It comes down to a couple of plays. That's how it is in a game like that."'

Marker Buchanon turns vision into reality [6:30 AM]
Contra Costa Times reports: '"That's Drew Bledsoe," Buchanon said. "He's going to try to put it in tight places where people don't expect him to put it."'

Marker Raiders thrive with blur in backfield [6:29 AM]
Contra Costa Times reports: 'The Bills built their defensive game plan around stopping receivers Tim Brown and Jerry Rice, which seems reasonable enough. Unfortunately for them, that left Garner and Jerry Porter unchaperoned, and they combined for 294 total yards as the Raiders (after San Diego's loss to Denver) became the league's only unbeaten team.'

Marker One Jerry jubilant, another dejected [6:26 AM]
San Jose Mercury News reports: 'It was Porter's career day. But it was Rice's worst day in a while. He had four catches -- and four drops. Although he finished with 77 yards and a touchdown, he left about 100 yards and a score or two on Ralph Wilson Stadium's turf.'

Marker Raiders might be NFL's greatest show [6:24 AM]
San Jose Mercury News reports: '``They just came out with a bunch of different formations and personnel,'' said Bills linebacker London Fletcher. ``The things you can't have in a game are the big plays.'' But the Raiders had them.'

Marker Buchanon a force to be reckoned with [6:23 AM]
San Jose Mercury News reports: 'It's a victory the defense will gladly take. Buchanon knows the Raiders got away with one. ``It was a long day for us,'' he said. ``There were a lot of missed tackles, a lot of missed assignments. We haven't had our best game yet. That's kind of scary."'
