Marker McDermott introduced on eve of Rex's day two years ago [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The on-stage population was reduced by half. Only McDermott and Whaley occupied it Friday for questions from the media. Owners Terry and Kim Pegula were present, and Terry introduced the new coach before returning to a spot in the front-row next to his wife. In 2015, Terry Pegula occupied the stage with team President Russ Brandon, General Manager Doug Whaley and then coach Rex Ryan.'

Marker Bills' McDermott familiar with 'building a defense, brick by brick' [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"In my opinion, this was the best job on the market," McDermott said. "Mainly (because of) the ownership, Terry and Kim. I have seen what great ownership looks like and we have two great owners. ... Secondly, when you talk about a fan base, I've been up here and I've played here before and I've seen those fans, capacity crowds, screaming. ... That's what I want to be a part of."'

Marker Sully: Self-effacing McDermott fills role of the anti-Rex [1:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Later, McDermott called himself a "meticulous and thorough guy." Intended or not, it was a retroactive knock on Ryan, who was famous for his lack of attention to detail. No one has yet given a reason for Ryan's firing, but that was clearly a reason for his downfall as the Bills' coach.'

Marker Bills hire Leslie Frazier as defensive coordinator, will retain special teams coordinator Danny Cros [1:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"The offensive coordinator position is an extremely important one, and just like the rest of the staff, it’s an active situation right now," McDermott said during his press conference. "As soon as I was offered the job I went to work on beginning to put this staff together. I believe in quality staff and hiring staff that are great teachers, great motivators, care tremendously about these players and will put them in a position to be successful.'

Marker Jim Kelly's thoughts on the Sean McDermott hire [1:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I like it. If (it doesn’t sit well with the players), they won’t be here," Kelly said. "The coach is the guy. When Marv Levy came in, he told us the way it was; we bought into it. It took us a little time – I think everybody remembers those days – until we put our individual egos to the side and realized it’s all about the team."'

Marker Steve Tasker: McDermott will be demanding of players [1:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"He is going to demand things of his players not just on the football field but in their character -- in the way they approach the game," Tasker said of McDermott. "And, I think that's a must at the NFL level."'

Marker What They Said: Transcript of Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott's introductory press conferenc [1:51 AM]

Marker Inside the NFL: Bills, Jags taking different approaches [1:50 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Pegulas continued to believe in the integrity of their football structure, enough to keep Doug Whaley as their general manager after dumping Rex Ryan as their coach. They simply chose to fill the Ryan hole with Sean McDermott. Khan didn’t have the same trust that all was fine at the top. After showing Gus Bradley the door, he not only elevated Marrone from interim to full-time status, but he also made former Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin executive vice president of football operations.'

Marker Bills introduce new coach, understated Sean McDermott [1:49 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Ryan won the room that day when he took the microphone from owner Terry Pegula and his very first words were, “Is this thing on? Because it's getting ready to be on. And, that's the truth.” Which, of course, it wasn’t and he was canned inside of two years.'

Marker Bills confirm hiring of Frazier, add two more coaches [1:48 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Castillo spent the past four seasons as the Ravens offensive line coach. A 22-year NFL coaching veteran, Castillo reunites with McDermott in Buffalo after spending time with him in Philadelphia. Castillo spent 18 seasons with the Eagles, filling the role of the team’s offensive line coach from 1998 to 2010 and then was the team’s defensive coordinator in 2011 and 2012. Castillo originally got his NFL start with the Bills, participating in the team’s Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship in 1992.'

Marker Hi Sean McDermott, welcome to Death Valley [1:47 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'As for the new coach and the direction owner Terry Pegula and general manager Doug Whaley went in this time, holy smokes. It’s like they gave up margaritas and steaks and became teetotaling vegetarians.'

Marker What they're saying about Bills coach Sean McDermott [1:46 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“Outstanding move. I honestly believe Sean has what it takes to move forward pretty quickly when it comes to leading guys. Look at where he’s been and who he’s learned from in this league — Jim Johnson, Andy Reid and Ron Rivera. Those are three quality bosses to learn from."'

Marker Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott non-committal on QB Tyrod Taylor [1:45 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"When you look at it, obviously the quarterback play in this league is critical," McDermott said. "I know-- I actually just met Tyrod 10 minutes ago before we came down here, had a nice conversation. Really at this point, whether it's Tyrod's situation or any other position, let's not get ahead of ourselves right now in terms of those positions. I'm going to go through and evaluate every position group, every player the same way I do everything else, in a methodic nature. So with respect to specific players, Tyrod in this case, there will be a time for that. Right now, it's about this organization and 'we' and getting this thing looking the way it needs to look.'

Marker Doug Whaley, Sean McDermott weigh in on who has control of Buffalo Bills' roster [1:44 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"This is a team effort," Whaley said. "We're working together to get this franchise to where we know it should be. It starts at the top. The Pegulas' mantra is we're working together, we're not working for them. And that perpetuates through every level of this organization."'

Marker What Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott said at first press conference (transcript) [1:43 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'The first people I want to address is the players, our players some of whom are here today. I am proud to be one of you, it is an honor to coach you and I look forward to doing this together. I understand the expectations that come with the job of this magnitude and I accept that challenge. I am looking to build a culture of winning and that starts insides these walls and extends to our community.'

Marker What Andy Reid, Mike Tomlin said about new Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott [1:42 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"Sean's a great coach, but he's an even better person. He is intelligent and very thoughtful. He's got natural leadership skills. The Buffalo Bills are in great hands under his leadership. It's been a pleasure knowing him over the years. I'm not surprised by this opportunity, and I won't be surprised by the success he has in Buffalo."'

Marker Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula: Dysfunctional talk an insult to organization [1:41 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"First off, I think that all started with some false information printed in the national media about our organization," said Terry Pegula. "I've got to believe it's from people who have no idea what our organization's like or how we operate within. I honestly believe that. I disagree with their opinions, and I can tell you one thing: We had a lot of applications and people who wanted that coaching job with the Bills. So I don't know what these guys are writing about."'

Marker Chargers hire Anthony Lynn to guide team in new L.A. home [1:40 AM]
Los Angeles Times reports: 'Having identified a head coach is one. Lynn, 48, will be looked upon to infuse an added toughness to a locker room with an ever-creative tendency to lose close games. Eighteen of the Chargers’ 23 losses the past two years were decided by a one-score margin, including nine of 11 this season.'

AP reports: 'Lynn attracted extensive interest on the NFL job market, and the Chargers took a break from planning their move out of San Diego to secure a deal with him. Lynn becomes the first black coach in franchise history.'

Marker Bills add Frazier, two others, to coaching staff [1:36 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'With 18 years of NFL experience as a coach, Frazier also served as a defensive coordinator with the Vikings prior to his elevation to head coach. He worked with McDermott in his first NFL job with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999.'

Marker Bills owner Terry Pegula says 'no truth to this dysfunctional talk' [1:35 AM]
ESPN reports: '"There's no foundation, no truth to this dysfunctional talk. I consider it an insult to our organization and the Bills and the good people with the Sabres. They can't be real happy to hear that."'

Marker New Bills coach confirms GM Doug Whaley will control roster [1:34 AM]
ESPN reports: '"I told him the GM and the coach work together," Pegula said. "Obviously, Doug is sitting in the room with him while he's interviewing. So [McDermott" target="_blank"> knows, if he's hired by this GM ... I like him. It's not like we're bringing a new GM in and hiring [McDermott" target="_blank"> as a coach first. This GM, coach working together, they both answer to the owners."'

Marker Bills owner: We're not dysfunctional; wants players and coaches 'to be the story' [1:33 AM]
CBS Sports reports: '"I guess there's been a perception we're inaccessible," he said. "But I've been consistent from Day 1 when I bought the Sabres and then with the Bills. By owning these teams, it's about the players and coaches. We didn't buy teams to be visible in the media. We bought teams to keep them in the area and to flourish with them. I let the coaches and the players be out front and be the story."'

CBS Sports reports: 'Lynn became known for quickly establishing the Bills as one of the NFL's best running teams this season, orienting the team's offense around the skill set of LeSean McCoy. Armed with Melvin Gordon and a strong run-blocking offensive line, it's fair to expect a similar system in Los Angeles, but before the Lynn hire, La Canfora reported that offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and the majority of his staff was expected to be retained by whoever was brought aboard.'

Marker Los Angeles Chargers announce their new head coach [1:30 AM]
Fox Sports reports: '“One thing that’s very clear about Anthony Lynn is he’s a leader. He’s a natural-born leader,” Chargers president of football operations John Spanos told the team’s website. “As you can tell, I am very excited about the leadership qualities he’s going to bring to our team."'
