Buffalo Bills News - August 24, 2015

Marker Some random thoughts on football: Big 30, college and the NFL [1:54 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'To which Dareus added, “We all know how I feel … we all know how the team feels. I want to be a part of the Buffalo Bills. I want to be a part of the history that we’re going to make here. But at the same time it’s a business and we all have to go through negotiations just like anybody else in any other career.'

Marker Rex Ryan could make QB decision after Steelers game [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"I think they've had a fair shake all the way through camp. I don't think there's any doubt in that," Ryan said. "Everybody's had a ton of reps and things. I think I was honest with that and we're still evaluating it, so we'll just continue."'

Marker Buffalo Bills hopeful Mario Butler shares how he overcame the brutal unsolved murder of his father [1:52 AM]
New York Daily News reports: 'The family never got the closure of justice for his father’s killer, and they haven’t delved into Jeffery Butler’s struggles with drugs and divorce from Butler’s mother, he told the newspaper. The elder Butler's death shows up as one of 32 cold cases from 2000 still listed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. His son, who was 10 years old at the time, couldn’t sleep for three full days after the murder.'

Marker Ryan not close to naming starting quarterback [1:51 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Of course, "first string" would be a stretch. He had the No. 1 line, but all of the top skill position players were out injured. In fact, the top four receivers and top five running backs were all out, so it was rather unfortunate that Taylor didn't get the full benefit of the Bills' personnel in his big chance to start.'

Marker Bills' Ryan said all four QB's could play Saturday [1:50 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Ryan still will not say who will start Saturday and he did say all four could play. Will a decision be made afterwards? Ryan said, “We’ll see. We’ll get together as a staff and then with Whales and we’ll see if that’s the appropriate time or not, but we may make that decision then, I would anticipate that we would, but we’ll see how long we can keep it from you guys.”'

Marker Dareus sits out; Jackson takes charge [1:49 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'With LeSean McCoy, Boobie Dixon, Karlos Williams, and Bryce Brown all still out, Fred Jackson is the number one running back. The first two plays in the first 11-on-11 session were Fred Jackson off tackle followed by a swing pass to the veteran.'

Marker Rex Ryan 'comfortable' with preseason schedule [1:48 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: '"You know what I think, I like the schedule the way it is because your players don’t play the entire game. Things happen, there’s no question, but they can happen in a controlled scrimmage situation, they can happen anytime," he said.'

Marker 7 Bills training camp observations: Day 16 [1:47 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'So, the rotation we’ve seen over the last two practices — with all three quarterbacks getting time with the first-team offense — is likely to be a precursor to what we’ll see Saturday against Pittsburgh. Who starts the game will likely be merely semantics, and it appears the Bills are putting a lot of stock in how each of the three men perform in that game.'

Marker LB Steward tapped to fill void left by Powell [1:46 AM] reports: '“I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemies,” Steward said of Powell’s injury. “But with [head coach Rex Ryan] it’s next man up … I’ve got to get out here and get the best work I can get and make sure I’m on top of my stuff because when my number’s called, I want to be ready.”'

Marker Top 3 things you need to know from Day 16 of Bills camp [1:45 AM] reports: '"I think collectively we’ve done a good job," said EJ Manuel. "Our biggest thing is being consistent and (quarterbacks) coach (David) Lee has done a great job coaching us up just same as all the coaches I think have done a great job. Coach (Greg) Roman’s done an awesome job as far as putting plays and putting us in good situations to have success out there, especially in these games. So the main thing in preseason games, you want to get the ball rolling—you want to get first downs, you want to execute, and obviously you want to win the game too. But I think we’ve all done a good job.”'

Marker Bills’ Butler finds faith in forgiveness [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'His father was murdered. And not only that. His father, Jeffery Butler, was killed, sliced to pieces and stuffed into his own refrigerator inside his home 10 minutes away.'

Marker Dareus’ past issues don’t justify Suh-like deal [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'There’s always a risk involved with big contracts. The Dolphins took a chance on Suh, who has a history of dirty play on the field. Teams are willing to look past personal issues in the name of winning, but you can’t blame the Bills if they’re taking Dareus’s past into account.'

Marker Dareus tones it down on contract negotiations [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“People feel certain ways but at the same time, we’re going to get over that hill.”'

Marker Bills’ QB Report: Cassel goes first [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'During 11-on-11 work, Taylor was the first quarterback through with the starters. He completed a swing pass to Jackson before getting “sacked,” then on the next play completed a pass to Thigpen. His best throw came late in practice to Goodwin, who was wide open behind the defense for a long gain.'

Marker Marcell Dareus wants to 'be paid what I'm due' [1:55 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Besides his production, he has been durable, missing only one game in four years with the Bills. That number will grow to at least two this year: He will be sitting out the first game against Indianapolis due to a violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy.'

Marker From orphan to NFL owner [1:54 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"I don't remember anything before I was five," Kim said recently during a lengthy, exclusive interview at St. John Fisher College, where the NFL team she and her husband, Terry Pegula, now own was taking a break from practice. "I don't have any bad memories, nothing traumatic at all that I can think of. I just know somebody with the agency flew with me, and my parents picked me up at JFK, and that was the beginning of my life, really."'

Marker Buffalo Bills DT Marcell Dareus not necessarily looking for Suh money, says he would sign franchise [1:54 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"We all know how I feel," Dareus said Saturday after the Bills wrapped up a training camp practice. "We all know how the team feels. I want to be a part of the Buffalo Bills. I want to be a part of the history we're going to make here. But at the same time, it's a business and we have to go through negotiations just like anybody else in any other career. So we just try to do what we can and move forward."'

Marker Fred Jackson, Sammy Watkins return [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'All three quarterbacks took some first-team reps Saturday in what was a low-key practice for the Buffalo Bills. Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor took the majority of the starters' reps, but EJ Manuel did mix in. The first-team offense worked against the second and third-team defense, so it was tough to take away too much from the reps. Rex Ryan said the team has not decided which quarterback will start the third preseason game.'

Marker Bills' Jackson, Watkins return to practice [1:52 AM]
AP reports: '"He looked pretty good," Ryan said. "I was happy to see him. He was doing more than I thought he was going to do."'

Marker Bills DT Dareus would sign franchise tag if needed [1:51 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: '"I made of it that he's probably in good position, I mean when you see what the numbers were and all that stuff," Bills coach Rex Ryan said Saturday's practice. "I might settle for those numbers, but I'm not sure. I don't play defensive tackle. But obviously that's his business and his agents and our team and things like that. I stay out of the negotiating-type stuff, obviously."'

Marker Bills sign WR Willis [1:50 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Undrafted out of Emporia State, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound Willis signed with the Oakland Raiders but was released on Aug. 18.'

Marker Marcell Dareus 'not necessarily' looking for Ndamukong Suh-type deal [1:49 AM]
ESPN reports: 'The Bills have leverage because they could assign Dareus, a two-time Pro Bowler and the third overall selection in the 2011 draft, the franchise tag next spring.'

Marker 7 Bills training camp observations: Day 15 [1:48 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'Rex Ryan said the Bills still haven’t decided on the quarterback rotation against the Steelers, and more importantly, who will get the start for the third preseason game of the year. Even more interesting, Ryan told reporters that it’s a “high, high possibility” that the team would keep three quarterbacks on the roster once final cuts are made.'

Marker Bills sign WR Austin Willis [1:47 AM] reports: 'The 5-9, 175-pound Emporia State product signed as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders after the 2015 NFL Draft before being released on August 18th. Willis totaled 127 receptions for 2,002 yards and 18 touchdowns in his four seasons at Emporia State.'

Marker Top 3 things you need to know from Day 15 at Bills Camp [1:46 AM] reports: 'After an aggravating string of nagging injuries, the Bills showed signs of getting healthier in their Saturday morning workout at St John Fisher College. Running Back Fred Jacksontook a full turn at running back, after missing the last several weeks of camp with a hamstring strain.'

Marker Bills and LISC donate 200K to Rochester City School District [1:45 AM] reports: '“The Bills are proud to partner with LISC and the National Football League Foundation on this project to benefit young people in the city of Rochester,” said Bills President and Managing Partner Russ Brandon. “As an organization, we concentrate on promoting fitness and health and safety within the Western New York community. We believe this field will provide a safe playing surface for Rochester students to use for youth football training in addition to a number of other fitness-based activities all year-round.”'

Olean Times Herald reports: 'The situation at running back is particularly worrisome.'

Marker Bills cornerback Darby elevates his game [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“He just keeps elevating his performance, and that’s what we expect,” coach Rex Ryan said of Darby. “I don’t care about who we had on the corner last week or the lack of support we gave” in coverage. “I’d rather have him learn from it in the preseason and be ready to go out in the regular season. But I thought he did a good job.”'

Marker Size doesn't matter for aggressive Bills CB Robey [1:58 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"Tackling the first part of last year was one of my downfalls, I had to get it right," he said. "Sometimes I beat myself up when I miss tackles because that's unacceptable. It was very important for us to make tackles in Schwartz's defense and he talked about that all the time in meetings — don't miss tackles, eliminate the gains."'

Marker R-E-L-A-X with the E.J. support [1:57 AM]
