Buffalo Bills News - November 27, 2003

Marker These turkeys might not live past Thanksgiving [5:02 AM]
Fox Sports reports: 'You can argue that no team plays with passion when it can't move the ball on offense. Tell that to owner Ralph Wilson. He ripped the players and coaches after a loss to the then-winless New York Jets on Oct. 12, saying his team sleep-walked and showed no emotion or enthusiasm. He went on to say that at least Cincinnati, a team the Bills had beaten one week earlier, was aggressive the way his team used to be. Those are not the words Williams, who is in the final year of his contract, wants to hear. Wilson hasn't been as outspoken publicly since the loss to the Jets, but his assessment of where this team stands certainly hasn't improved.'

Marker The Bills Now Have A Roster Spot With Aiken's Season Over [5:01 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Travis Henry and Eric Moulds are not on the injury report, but were held out of practice. Jeff Posey worked some on the side, Mike Pucillo, Sammy Morris with a knee and Angelo Crowell all didn't practice. Those four players as well as Clarence Coleman are questionable for the Giants game.'

Marker Henry seconds Winfield's critique of Bills offense [7:05 PM]
AP reports: '''It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that,'' Henry said. ''There's a lot of things that we could've been doing early in the season but we weren't. But it comes to a point, I guess, where you've got to point the fingers at somebody.'''

Marker Sam Aiken Placed On I.R. [5:58 PM] reports: 'Aiken appeared in five games for the Bills this season and caught five passes for 49 yards.'

Marker Bills and Giants Similar [5:57 PM] reports: '"We've both committed football sins, so to speak," said Buffalo defensive tackle Sam Adams. "Turn the ball over, not get enough turnovers, that kind of thing."'

Marker Losing is a Shock [5:56 PM]
The Sports Network reports: 'The Giants have a world of talent on offense, but the team that was supposed to be very explosive this season has failed to produce as expected. From penalties and dropped passes to breakdowns on the offensive line and untimely injuries to RG Rich Seubert and TE Jeremy Shockey, the Giants' offense has been hampered in one way or another all season long.'

Marker Skid at four [5:55 PM]
The Sports Network reports: '"We finally got in the end zone a couple of times, but it just wasn't enough," said Bledsoe, who is 2-0 in his career against the Giants. "We just have to keep working at it. That is what we get paid to do. This is the ugly part of this business. When you don't win it can get ugly. We come back and go to work and do everything we can to win next week. But this is the hard part of this business for sure."'

Marker Disappointing foes meet at Giants Stadium in Week 13 [5:54 PM]
The Sports Network reports: '"We have to come out and win every week," said Williams, who is feeling the heat in Buffalo. "That's how we approach this week. That's how we approach every week. Our guys battle, they play very hard and prepare hard."'

Marker Bills place backup WR Aiken on injured reserve [5:53 PM]
AP reports: 'Aiken was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, two days after arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.'

Marker Bledsoe leaves practice with upset stomach [5:52 PM]
AP reports: '``He's just sick,'' coach Gregg Williams said. ``We sent him home and we'll see how he is tomorrow. He practiced the first part of practice. We just took a precautionary thing. There is a bug going around.'''

Marker Sick Bledsoe sent home by Bills [3:15 PM]
Rochester D & C reports: 'It is believed to be flu-like symptoms, so Bledsoe was not be added to the injury report. He was expected to return to work Thursday for the Bills’ Thanksgiving Day practice.'

Marker Giants vs. Buffalo Bills [12:20 PM] reports: 'The Bills lead the regular season series, 5-3, including a 2-0 advantage in Giants Stadium.'

Marker Rookie Club Thankful to Help Others [12:19 PM] reports: '"It's a great thing just to be around the kids," Mario Haggan said. "It's much easier than going to practice because the kids and the people in the community love you. Continuing to play and being able to give back to the community is just one of the blessings that I receive from playing football."'

Marker McGee turns the corner for Bills [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's exciting, but it's kind of nerve-racking, too, because you don't want to let your team down," said McGee, who was drafted in the fourth round last April. "With them putting me in the nickel it just gets me a little more comfortable with the defense. I'm actually getting my feet wet out there playing."'

Marker Bills fans face prospect of taking a hike [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Loyalty: We can still win one. Maybe.
Common Sense: Would you keep going to a restaurant that served lousy food? After a while, why punish yourself?'

Marker An annual tradition [5:15 AM]
CNN/SI reports: 'The Bills, like the Patriots before them, are having trouble protecting the immobile Bledsoe, who often likes to hold onto the ball for an extra second or two to try to make a big play downfield. By the time the second half of the season rolls around, Bledsoe is probably too shellshocked to produce a decent quarterback rating and his team's hopes for a championship slip away.'

Marker Giants Close to Being Eliminated [10:02 PM]
AP reports: '"We are just not making things happen when we have opportunities," Fassel said Tuesday.'

Marker CB Winfield questions Bills' pass-oriented philosophy [7:56 PM]
AP reports: '''At times I'll be on the sideline and say, 'Why don't they run?''' Winfield wrote in this week's edition of Bills Digest, a weekly publication that's partly controlled by the Bills. ''I don't know how effective the bye-week self-scouting was for the offense. We're still doing the same things that we did before that point. Perhaps, they're too predictable.'''

Marker Bills’ second-best effort couldn’t stop losing skid [1:51 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'We’ve gone from extremely high expectations, fostered, no less, by the players themselves, to almost feeling sorry for them.'

Marker What Happened? [1:50 PM]
WOKR-TV reports: 'If you watched the game Sunday you cannot say that the Bills lost because of a lack of effort. Travis Henry played with a fractured leg. Eric Moulds should be resting that painful groin injury. Sam Gash already has his Super Bowl ring but he’s still busting linebackers in the mouth. Lack of effort did not cause the loss. What’s missing is that spark and that excitement and most importantly that confidence that the winning teams and the teams on the rise have that the Bills do not.'

Marker Aches are becoming a big pain for Bills [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'At some point over the next few weeks, the Bills will consider whether it's time for certain players, mainly Henry and Moulds, to end the season and avoid further damage. There also comes a time when players, no matter how tough, hurt their team. When is enough, enough?'

Marker Columnist finds home at [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Easterbrook has been a consistent critic this season of teams such as the Buffalo Bills who have a fondness for passing in third-and-short-yardage situations. What separates him from other NFL columnists, however, is he might express his feelings about Bills coach Gregg Williams in haiku, or trot out a theory about why the Bills are cursed since they changed the color scheme of their uniforms a few years ago.'

Marker Bills' Donahoe has few answers [5:20 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Last year, the Bills were 4-3 in games decided by 7 points or less, meaning they played in more competitive games and were better at winning them. Whatever confidence quarterback Drew Bledsoe and his offensive teammates had playing in the clutch has slipped away with many other facets of their game.'

Marker Bills will pass on setting records [5:19 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'The 2003 Bills have an NFL-low six TD passes through 11 games. If they tie the team single-game record with six TD passes in each of the remaining five games, they’d still fall three short of tying the single-season record set 12 years ago (33 by Jim Kelly and six by Frank Reich).'

Marker What do the Bills have to be thankful for? [5:18 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'And Tom Donahoe can be thankful for an owner who didn’t fire him two months ago.'

Marker A first look at the next Bills game [5:17 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'WHO is Ryan Denney? Allegedly he’s a defensive end who wears No. 92 for the Bills. When you see him, call Gregg Williams. As a second-round draft choice and someone the Bills traded up to get, Denney is a bust.'

Marker Inside slant [5:16 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'The Bills are giving it their all, but two things are holding them back and have been key reasons for their four-game slide: First and foremost, they aren't as good as many prognosticators thought they were, but second, they have endured some debilitating injuries to key personnel.'

Marker Strategy and personnel [5:15 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'For the fourth game in a row, all losses, and for the fifth time this season QB Drew Bledsoe failed to reach 200 yards passing.'

Marker Notes, quotes, anecdotes [5:14 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: '"It hurts about as bad as any loss I've had in football. Guys were fighting their butts off and doing everything they can to try and get this thing turned around. We laid it on the line today and yeah, it hurts." -- Center Trey Teague on the bitter disappointment of blowing a 14-3 lead and losing to the Colts.'

Marker Bills May Lose Posey And Aiken [5:13 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Gregg Williams says rookie WR Sam Aiken had his knee scoped on Monday. He suffered a cartilage tear during practice last Friday. Linebacker Jeff Posey has a sprained knee and will undergo a MRI. Guard Mike Pucillo has a turf toe sprain. Williams says all three will be updated on Wednesday.'
