Buffalo Bills News - November 12, 2004

Marker Changes Can be Tough in Mid-Season [11:49 AM] reports: 'I remember my second season in Buffalo when Marv Levy replaced Hank Bullough as the Bills head coach midway through the year. That was a tough transition to make, but when you're losing, you look forward to any type of change. I think that's the attitude the Dolphins need to have right now. If they can turn their 1-8 record into 6-10 or so by the end of the year, they'll have something to build on heading into the off-season. Having a new coach around may rally the team. We'll have to wait and see how they respond.'

Marker Fletcher Shows Special Teams Are a Priority [11:49 AM] reports: 'I watch the opposing kickers during pregame warm-ups as well, which helps me determine where to place Nate Clements on punt returns.'

Marker Bills O-Line Continues to Develop [11:48 AM] reports: 'Really Drew Bledsoe has played pretty good all year. We've had some miscues at times that were really not his fault. The thing he's done better this year compared to last year is that he's moving around the pocket better and avoiding people within the pocket while still being able to throw down the field. He has taken off a couple of times and run the ball, which is good. The play last week against the Jets, when he ran for 17 yards, was a big first down. It kept our drive going and we were able to get a touchdown out of that drive. Everything is not going to be the way that you draw it up on paper when you go play the game and sometimes the quarterback has to make a play out of nothing and if Drew can continue to do that it will be very helpful.'

Marker (3-5) at New England (7-1) [11:42 AM]
The Sports Network reports: 'Patriots 20, Bills 17.'

Marker Pats can’t rest [9:03 AM]
Nashua Telegraph reports: 'Are they the new and improved Buffalo Bills? Has Drew Bledsoe really regained the magic touch? Is Willis McGahee the difference? Or is it all Bills head coach Mike Mularkey?'

Marker Bills make a run for it [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"We seem more happier and happier every day," said McGahee, who will be playing his first NFL game in prime time. "We want to keep that feeling.'

Marker Selfless ideals make Patriots a true team [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'New England has become the competitive standard.'

Marker A dozen youngsters put Bills in middle of age bracket [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The average age of the 53 players on the Bills' active roster is 26.4 years, which is tied for 12th youngest in the 32-team league.'

Marker History isn't on Bills' side when playing champions [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'But if history is the teacher, expect a long night Sunday when the Bills face the New England Patriots in Gillette Stadium. This will be Buffalo's 13th road game against a defending Super Bowl champion and the first dozen have been mostly horrid.'

Marker Yards from scrimmage constitute best career barometer [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'I don't look upon all-purpose yards as a very significant statistic. Yards from scrimmage are more important because rushing and receiving yards are much harder earned than kick return yards.'

Marker Can Bills Win Sunday? [8:52 AM]
WOKR-TV reports: 'Patriots 17 Bills 10.'

Marker 49ers sign Pittsburg's Simonton to practice squad [6:47 AM]
Contra Costa Times reports: 'The Buffalo Bills, with Travis Henry and Willis McGahee in their backfield, cut Simonton just before this season. "I thought I'd stay in Buffalo, and after this season one or two (Henry or McGahee) would be gone, I'd be there and it would be an ideal situation," said Simonton, who signed with the Bills in 2003.'

Marker McGahee is truckin' [6:23 AM]
Orange County Register reports: '"When people tell me I can't do something," McGahee told reporters this week, "I like to go out and prove them wrong."'

Marker Drew not the same old Bledsoe [5:03 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'In recent weeks, the 32-year-old quarterback has been more nimble of foot and mind. More decisive. More confident. More like the Drew of old than an old Drew.'

Marker Milloy makes difference [4:55 AM]
Boston Globe reports: 'Said Patriots quarterback Tom Brady: "He's tough and he's always around the ball. He looks like the old Lawyer to me."'

Marker Pats expect tough test [4:55 AM]
Boston Herald reports: 'The Bills were the victim of a bad game plan the first time, as they blitzed Tom Brady on 42 plays and the Pats quarterback responded by repeatedly torching them downfield.'

Marker Off and running [4:54 AM]
Freeport Journal Standard reports: 'As a coach, Beebe has found himself borrowing from the philosophy of two coaches that he played for, Hall-of-Famer Marv Levy and current Seattle Seahawks boss Mike Holmgren. Levy gave Aurora Christian a pre-game pep talk before its first-round game against Annawan. "If I knew one guy who was always prepared, it was Marv Levy," Beebe said.'

Marker McGahee rushes to turn Bills around [10:14 PM]
Lawrence Eagle Tribune reports: 'Making his first Foxboro visit Sunday night (8:30), McGahee has single-handedly transformed Buffalo from a limp NFL doormat to an energized franchise on the rise.'

Marker Bills considering switching CB Vincent to safety once he returns [9:59 PM]
AP reports: '''We've tried certain things in the training room. We go out on the football field and my body only allows me to do so much,'' Vincent said. ''It's frustrating, it's disappointing. I don't think anybody wants to be injured.'''

Marker Milloy making impact in return [5:27 PM] reports: '"I know he is probably the happiest to be back," Buffalo head coach Mike Mularky said. "He never missed a game until this. I think he is such a positive [influence], not just Sunday afternoons, but when he is on the practice field there is a whole different atmosphere within the practice. He is that kind of guy."'

Marker Buffalo's Bulldozer [5:26 PM] reports: '“He takes on the first hit, that’s one less hit I have to worry about,” said McGahee. “It’s good having somebody in front of you blocking, taking pride in what they’re doing and try and make something happen for the team.”'

Marker Buffalo Bills vs. New England Patriots [5:26 PM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'Patriots 20-17.'

Marker Mike Williams Returned To Practice [5:25 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Troy Vincent didn't practice and he declared himself out of Sunday's game. He was trying to hold back his frustration while saying he's doing all he can to get his knee back to a point where he can play.'

Marker Defense Steadily Progressing [4:20 PM] reports: 'I've got some great assistant coaches. Those coaches are doing their job to make sure the backups are prepared to go. When you see that, those guys are going on the football field and not making mental mistakes and they are getting the job done. Like I mentioned earlier, we've got a pair of backups that have six sacks. To me, that means they are paying attention in the meetings and they are getting enough repetitions where we can still get the veteran guys their reps. Even with little to none reps they still go in and produce. To me, that makes the defense that much better.'

Marker Bills to become first NFL team with youth football facility [4:15 PM]
AP reports: 'The first games to be played on the field will happen Saturday, when the Bills host four regional youth championship games.'

Marker Healthy Milloy making presence felt with Bills defense [4:15 PM]
AP reports: '''He's a difference-maker,'' coach Mike Mularkey said. ''Your disguises are a little better. His experience is a big plus. Even in practices, you can tell there's a difference.'''

Marker Home Away From Home for Boston Backers [2:41 PM] reports: '"We were their biggest group sales of the season," he said. "It was pretty amazing. We brought five kegs of beer and other tailgate supplies on a Rider truck. The State Police were even keeping an eye on us because we had around 400 people together."'

Marker April brings a special touch to the Bills [1:41 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: '“(The two Player of the Week honors) should give us the impetus to go on,” he admitted. “Nothing should keep us back except complacency. (When I got here) I thought we had good players (for the kicking squads) and a good team. We’ve got a bunch of overachievers — or at least an overachiever mentality — and they’re just trying to get better every game.”'

Marker Bills starting to find out who they are [12:47 PM]
Quincy Patriot Ledger reports: 'McGahee's emergence has been a godsend for Bledsoe. With rookie first-round pick J.P. Losman almost recovered from a broken leg, Bledsoe's days would have been numbered had the Bills slid further out of contention. Instead, McGahee's tough running has taken the onus off Bledsoe, allowing him to fill the complementary role that Mularkey designed for him.'
