Buffalo Bills News - November 4, 2004

Marker CB Vincent Named Neighborhood MVP [2:57 PM] reports: 'The Ameriquest Mortgage Neighborhood MVP Award recognizes an NFL player each week during the regular season for his dedication to making physical improvements to neighborhoods in his community.'

Marker Bills CB Vincent returns to practice [12:35 PM]
The Sports Network reports: 'According to head coach Mike Mularkey, Vincent's status for Sunday's game against AFC-East foe New York (6-1) is unknown.'

Marker Bills looking to boost air mileage [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills' pass offense ranks 28th in yards, so it's no surprise Buffalo is below average on pass completions of 20-plus yards so far. The Bills have 16, which is tied for 25th in the league. The league average for teams with seven games played is 20.3.'

Marker Moorman's leg provides Bills an edge [8:50 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Moorman can make things happen with his legs, but it's his right one that has made him the Bills' secret weapon. Some feel the 28-year-old Kansas native has been his team's most valuable player so far. He boomed an 80-yarder in the opener and hasn't let up since. His gross average (43.2) is sixth in the AFC, but it doesn't begin to reflect his value. In the Bills' two wins, he was astonishing in the brutal winds of Ralph Wilson Stadium.'

Marker Teague poised to return [8:50 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills suddenly are banged up at receiver. Josh Reed has a bruised kneecap and is not likely to play. That puts Sam Aiken up to No. 3 receiver. Drew Haddad is questionable with a sore hamstring. If Haddad does not improve, the Bills would have three healthy receivers on the roster. That could prompt a promotion from the practice squad.'

Marker Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets [8:00 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'That's why I see the Jets winning 17-13.'

Marker Bills look to cool Jets' offense [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"I feel like we talked about getting to that next level," said linebacker Takeo Spikes. "Start here and keep climbing. Since about a month ago, there were several guys coming in here when it's pitch dark in the morning, and then leaving at 6:30 at night, putting in 12-hour days. It shows how much dedication is put toward the common goal that we all want."'

Marker Losman can't catch a break [5:00 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"Every time I say I'm doing good I go out there and it hurts," said the rookie first-round pick. "I didn't say anything this week so I'm going to see if that strategy works."'

Marker McGahee Posing Challenge for Jets [4:59 AM]
New York Times reports: '"And I'll tell you what he does: he can run downhill. The other guy was more of a slasher and cutter. This guy will run downhill. I know the guys from Miami have a passion for the end zone and the way they run the football. We've just got to keep it in front."'

Marker Chad plans to repay Bills [4:58 AM]
New York Post reports: 'A year ago, the Jets were coming off a big feel-good Monday Night Football victory at home over the Titans when they went "up there" to Buffalo the following Sunday to play the Bills and got ambushed. They were physically assaulted in a 17-6 loss that closed out any chances they had at a playoff berth.'

Marker About the Bills [4:57 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'They may have an aging quarterback who's been an easy target for the Jets' pass rush, but the Bills are dangerous. McGahee provides a changeup to a Jets defense that is accustomed to facing Henry. Buffalo's defense is tied for second in the league in total yardage allowed, fourth in rushing yardage, and sixth in points. The Jets needed a last-minute field goal to beat the Bills, 16-14, at home four weeks ago. It will be even harder to beat the Bills on the road.'

Marker Buffalo can be perilous to Jets [4:56 AM]
Bergen Record reports: 'And because of what happened last year, the NFL schedule makers may have given the Jets one more gift besides a favorable first five games when they dropped the Buffalo Bills into their Game 8 slot. "When the score was 41-7 with seven minutes left, I was talking to Coach [Herm] Edwards about it on the sideline," quarterback Chad Pennington said Wednesday, recalling his conversation during the rout of the Dolphins. "I was thinking about how we're going to handle this week and making sure we don't go up there and lay an egg. That's basically what we did last year."'

Marker Inside slant [4:54 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'While encouraged by the ability to punch the ball in the end zone against what had been the NFL's No. 1-ranked red zone defense, the Bills understand that beating a fellow two-win team doesn't elevate them to the status of playoff contender as the season hits the halfway mark.'

Marker Strategy and personnel [4:53 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'It was new special teams coach Bobby April who saw something on tape and decided it would be wise to let McGee challenge incumbent Antonio Brown for the job in training camp. "People probably had more confidence in me than I had in myself (as a return specialist)," McGee said. "Bobby, even in camp, he told me, 'I think you're one of the top athletes and you can be very effective doing this.' I'd said, 'Well, OK. I'll go out there and try and help the team.' But he was right and I am doing a pretty good job, especially with my guys blocking for me."'

Marker Notes, quotes [4:52 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'The Bills defense has yet to allow a 100-yard rusher.'

Marker Jets Hope to Avoid Letdown [9:35 PM] reports: '“It was a tough game here a couple weeks ago,” Edwards said. “We beat them on the last drive. They made some plays to get back in it. They have the ability to do that. They’ve got one of the better receivers in the game in Moulds, their quarterback has a strong arm, and they can make some plays. We mentally and physically have to be ready to play.”'

Marker Teague May Play On Sunday [9:27 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Trey Teague returned to the practice field and took full reps with the first unit offensive line. Troy Vincent was also out there Wednesday, but only practiced with the scout team.'

Marker Vincent Back to Work [9:26 PM] reports: '“I’ve been engaged in the classroom, so I know my assignments, I know where I need to be,” Vincent said. “It’s just a matter of getting my body back into the rhythm of playing football and just see if I can work through some of this soreness."'

Marker Youth Football: Road to One Bills Drive [9:24 PM] reports: 'This year the Buffalo Bills will be hosting the final round of the OATKA Classic on Saturday, November 13th, at the new Buffalo Bills Youth Football Stadium.'

Marker Bills Getting Healthy [9:23 PM] reports: '"Having Lawyer back has been a big boost for our team," Head Coach Mike Mularkey said. "He's a leader on our defense and is highly respected by his teammates. Just having him being able to play against the Jets will be a big lift for us."'

Marker NY Jets (6-1) at Buffalo (2-5) [9:22 PM]
AP reports: 'Buffalo has to do something different to change the series, which has seen New York win nine of the last 13 meetings. That includes a 16-14 victory on Oct. 10, when the Jets sacked Drew Bledsoe four times and intercepted one of his passes, giving them 56 sacks and 29 interceptions in 21 games against him.'

Marker Vincent returns to practice; Reed sits out [5:39 PM]
AP reports: '''I think it's still too early,'' Mularkey said. ''I think we have to see how his knee reacts. We'll have to see how it feels tomorrow.'''

Marker Bills Add Hill to Practice Squad [4:43 PM] reports: 'Originally selected by Atlanta in the sixth round of the 2002 NFL Draft out of Iowa, Hill spent time on the Falcons, Saints, and Lions practice squads in '02. He was most recently signed as a free agent by San Francisco (1/8/04) and was released prior to the 2004 season.'

Marker Gift of Warmth Collection this Sunday [4:42 PM] reports: 'Volunteers from the Salvation Army and M&T Bank will be collecting NEW hats, scarves, mittens, etc. outside all stadium gates from 11:30 AM until kickoff.'

Marker McGee providing big returns on Bills' trust [1:43 PM]
AP reports: 'The only knock against McGee is that he still has a tendency to not follow his blockers a lack of patience that is expected to improve over time. ''I'm still working on it,'' McGee said. ''I don't know where we stand as far as return average, but it could be way more than that if I was more disciplined.'''

Marker Strengths Collide [12:22 PM] reports: Q: Willis McGahee had a huge day Sunday. Why have the Bills decided to turn things over to him?
A: I think what happed was that Travis Henry was the starter for the last three years and in fairness to him, he should have been the starter at the beginning of the season. Obviously, Buffalo got off to a slow start and sputtered. Henry got hurt and had to miss the Miami game three weeks ago, and that was McGahee’s first start. He gained 111 yards, so it was obvious that here’s a guy who is a really good player that they have to find a way to get on the field. Then when they played Baltimore, they gave Henry the start back. They basically gave him one more chance. He didn’t have a great game. McGahee came into the game in the second half and ran pretty well. The Bills still lost, but then coming in the Arizona game, it was pretty obvious that Mike Mularkey had to give the ball to McGahee and he did.'

Marker McGee Wins AFC Special Teams Award [12:21 PM] reports: 'The 5-9, 201-pounder became only the third player in Bills history with two kickoff returns for touchdowns in a season (Week 4 vs. New England).'

Marker He's no new kid on the block [9:01 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I'd like to know if there's a fullback playing better in the league," Bills coach Mike Mularkey said. "I mean that. Throughout all these games, he has by far been our most consistent player on our offense. He is a load coming through there and he will put the lick on you. And he's catching the ball and he has some run-after-the-catch ability. If there's a better fullback in the league right now, I haven't seen him."'

Marker Euhus finding it pays to be a Bill [7:02 AM]
Corvallis Gazette Times reports: 'When the Bills win, the bone-chilling wind and lake-effect snow squalls that validate Buffalo's reputation for miserable late fall/winter weather don't seem quite so nasty. When they lose, though, a palpable depression blankets the region and people are glum until the following Sunday. Players are neighborhood heroes; prominent Bills like Bledsoe and Eric Moulds are mobbed when they appear in public. Super Bowl-era icons like Jim Kelly, Darryl Talley and Steve Tasker became community benefactors. Jack Kemp parlayed his popularity as a championship quarterback into a long tenure as a congressmen from a suburban district, a presidential cabinet position, and several attempts at the presidency.'
