Buffalo Bills News - August 21, 2001

Marker Ralph Wilson answers e-mails (8/21) [12:47 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: "Well, I think we now have the best front organization that I've had in the 41 years I have been associated with the team. That goes from Tom Donahoe, the President and General Manager, all the way down through all of the positions. My expectation for the team, we have a lot of young players it's going to take time to develop as it always does. We probably will be starting four rookies, which we've never done before."

Marker Players understand the produce-or-else drill [10:02 AM]
CNN/SI reports: The Bills recently let right tackle Robert Hicks go. Hicks started seven games last year but was struggling to win the starting job. When it became clear that rookie Jonas Jennings, a third-round pick from Georgia, would be good enough, Buffalo dumped Hicks. He counted for $512,000 against the salary cap and, for the cash-strapped Bills, that's a lot of space. Hicks could have gone down with an injury or the tendinitis in his right knee could have put him on IR. That was too much risk for GM Tom Donahoe to tolerate. As for the 6-foot-7, 330-pound Hicks, he was snatched up by the Lions.

Marker Thief loots parked car of Bills receiver McDaniel [9:10 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'McDaniel, an East Aurora resident, reported to Buffalo police Sunday that someone broke into his 2000 Ford between 2 and 4 a.m. while it was parked near William Street and Michigan Avenue. The thief broke a window and made off with two 4-inch television sets, an eight-disc CD changer and a DVD player, according to the police report.'

Marker Ostroski's injury is break for Hulsey [8:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Obviously, Hulsey thinks well on the fly because he enjoyed a solid outing, and with Ostroski out indefinitely with a broken tibia, this is Hulsey's time to prove he can play in the NFL. While a number of players can slip into Ostroski's position at right guard, Hulsey appears to be the most likely candidate to start when the Bills play their third preseason game Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals.'

Marker Ostroski may not miss whole season [8:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"At this time, it doesn't look like it's going to be a season-ending injury," Williams said. "He's going to be out for an indefinite period of time, and as the early stages of his rehabilitation takes place, hopefully we'll have a better timetable on that as it progresses. Right now, we believe it won't be a season-ending injury."'

Marker Training Camp Update (8/21) [8:47 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: Players Scheduled for McDonalds Autograph Tent: Peerless Price, Reggie Germany, Corey Thomas (after AM practice) Ruben Brown, Marques Sullivan, Michael Early (after PM practice).

Marker Line will stand pat, for now [5:42 AM]
D and C reports: '"As the early stages of his rehabilitation takes place, we'll hopefully have a better timetable as it progresses ... to get a window of chance on when he can come back," Williams said. "But right now, we believe it won't be a season-ending injury."'

Marker Mom's near-death toughened up Bowens [5:41 AM]
D and C reports: 'Bowens knows it will take time for him to fully adapt to the Bills' style, but he's patient. Like his mother's near-death experience taught him, life is too precious to worry about what's going to happen tomorrow. "My focus," he said, "is on the next practice."'

Marker With precious little depth, injuries could doom Bills [5:40 AM]
D and C reports: 'The main reasons for my initial 10-6 or 9-7 optimism were Buffalo playing in a less-than-stellar division and against a relatively soft schedule. Considering the subsequent roster cuts and injuries, now 7-9 or 6-10 is a more realistic projection.'

Marker Wounded Bills skip practice to rest minor injuries [5:39 AM]
D and C reports: 'The coach is familiar with players who don't practice well and instead save their best for the games. He's not enamored with them. "I hate it, I don't like it," he said. "I want them to show me in practice to get the opportunity to do it in the ballgame. But we all know some guys can crank it up and do it better in the ballgame. "These young guys better show it in practice if they want to get into the game."'

Marker Van Pelt; Player of the game [11:00 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: Gregg Williams commented after the game on Alex’s performance," I thought that Alex played well. He distributed the ball very well and got the ball to many different receivers. The mixture of the run game allows him to do that. I was pleased."

Marker Ostroski's injury likely not season-ending [10:55 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: "At this time, it doesn't look like it's going to be a season-ending injury. He's going to be out for an indefinite period of time, and as the early stages of his rehabilitation takes place, hopefully we'll have a better timetable on that as it progresses. Right now, we believe it won't be a season ending injury."

Marker Ostroski out indefinitely after undergoing surgery [8:16 PM]
AP reports: 'Although coach Gregg Williams could not provide a timetable for Ostroski's recovery, preliminary indications are that he will not miss the entire season.'

Marker Injuries are a new concern for the Bills [3:25 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'As for Moore, his days in Buffalo appear numbered. In limited action, he had two tackles and a sack, but was called for the face-mask infraction and a critical offsides while doing nothing on special teams. It seemingly will take a miracle to keep last season's third-round draft choice on the roster.'

Marker Bills-Eagles Game photos [2:07 PM]
NFL.com reports: - Travis Henry eludes LB Carlos Emmons - Sam Cowart tackles RB Duce Staley - KR Brian Mitchell is tackled by Dan O'Leary - TE Jay Riemersma is tackled after catching a pass near midfield - Larry Centers makes the catch - Nate Clements runs around Philadelphia punter during a punt return - and more

Marker Good News, Bad News [12:40 PM]
CNN/SI reports: Despite the injuries and the close score, the Bills dominated the Eagles on both sides of the ball, evening their preseason record to 1-1.

The good news was a solid defensive performance, which limited the Eagles 187 to net yards of offense and 11 first downs. The bad news was the inability to score in the red zone; the worst news was that versatile and durable veteran Ostroski breaking a leg.

Marker Crosby hopes for better luck this time in making Bills' roster [9:35 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'You can say this about fullback Phillip Crosby: He sure is persistent.'

Marker Time for Bills to dial up experienced line help [9:35 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The right side of the Buffalo Bills' line is a mess right now. It's a shipwreck. Forget the hot tub. Rob Johnson should be tossed into a lifeboat, with the women and children.'

Marker Lions claim Hicks; homecoming for Rice [9:34 AM]
AP reports: 'The Detroit Lions claimed veteran tackle Robert Hicks off waivers Sunday after he was released by the Buffalo Bills last week.'

Marker Johnson firmly entrenched in Buffalo [7:35 AM]
ESPN reports: "the Bills might indeed have to create a pass rush schematically, because they really have no proven pass rusher"....'The Bills' 12-man draft class ranks as one of the best in the NFL, and should in time augment the existing nucleus of young veterans. This is a very young team that might struggle at the outset of the season, but should get better the second half of the year.'

Marker Henry making quick impact in Buffalo [6:38 AM]
USA Today reports: 'The 5-9, 221-pound back hits holes quickly and possesses the burst to be a breakaway threat. "Obviously, he fits in very well with the scheme of running attack that we want," first-year coach Gregg Williams said, "and he's picking up the passing game much better than people projected."'

Marker Ostroski's broken leg leaves big hole on line [5:26 AM]
D and C reports: 'Spokesman Scott Berchtold said no determination has been made on how long Ostroski will be out of action, but offered that "it's a fairly lengthy time period." A minimum three-month recovery is probable.'

Marker Fresh approach for Bills [7:43 PM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'The fans are fired up and it's largely because of Williams, who has enough chutzpah to think he can install both a new offense (the famed West Coast approach) and a new defense (a 3-4), and get away with it. All of which suggests, apparently, that basic orneriness - and Williams, whose Titans knocked off the Bills on that razzle-dazzle kickoff return just 19 months and 19 days ago, has his share of that, too - can go a long way.'

Marker Clearly, Eagles offense is in preseason form [7:40 PM]
Trenton Times reports: 'Maybe they should have cancelled this preseason game. In their first effort of the preseason, the Eagles looked as uneven and as sloppy as the NeXturf at Veterans Stadium in a 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium last night.'

Marker Emotional day for Modrak [7:38 PM]
Trenton Times reports: 'Modrak has let go, however. "My job now is with the Bills, to make them a better team," he said.'

Marker Eagles find positives in loss to Bills [7:36 PM]
Easton Express Times reports: 'Duce Staley's return to game action was proclaimed a success and two rookies made big plays in the passing game, giving the Eagles reason to smile despite Saturday's 6-3 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium.'

Marker Eagles gave Modrak a raw deal [7:34 PM]
Easton Express Times reports: '"Fortunately, I have a good situation here," Modrak said. "Tom couldn't have been more reassuring, and Mr. (Buffalo chairman Ralph) Wilson, too. I was going through the Chicago situation. He (Donahue) said, 'There's one here if that (job) doesn't work out.' I owe him a great deal. It's his show. He knows what he's doing and he's a good guy to work for."'

Marker Ostroski's injury severe blow for Bills offensive line [5:51 PM]
AP reports: 'Restricted by the salary cap, the Bills are severely handcuffed in going after a capable veteran. And even if they find someone, it's difficult to determine how long it will take for the line -- already featuring two newcomers in Conaty and rookie right tackle Jonas Jennings -- to jell.'

Marker Crack in the line [9:10 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills already had a concern at right tackle, where rookie third-round draft choice Jonas Jennings is trying to win the starting job. Now playing next to Jennings at right guard is Corey Hulsey, a second-year man who spent all of last season on the practice squad. Hulsey may be challenged by Craig Heimburger, who has appeared in two games over two NFL seasons, or by rookie Marques Sullivan.'

Marker Williams, defense rise to occasion [9:09 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills have yet to unveil every aspect of their aggressive "46" defense, but they showed some glimpses Saturday of what it might look like.'
