Buffalo Bills News - November 25, 2002

Marker Garnes, Beasley Pick Their Spots [5:02 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'Beasley's second interception of the season came when he timed his break perfectly on a slant pass intended for Peerless Price and grabbed a bullet from Bledsoe. "That ball just about knocked me over," said Beasley, who returned the ball five yards to the Jets' 42. "Your eyes get so big when the ball is coming at you like that. I just concentrated on catching the ball."'

Marker Martin Back to His Old Self [5:01 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'If Martin felt any pain yesterday, he inflicted a good deal more of it by looking like the Martin of old for much of the Jets' fourth straight win, darting up the middle on handoffs, skirting the end on pitchouts and dancing around defenders.'

Marker Chrebet had one catch, but it was a whopper [5:00 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'When you need a crucial play, you go to your money player. Even if he has largely been written out of the playbook for much of this season. When it's third down, it's time for Wayne Chrebet.'

Marker Jets, Morton Make Sure Polk Eats His Words [4:59 AM]
New York Newsday reports: '"We knew who we were targeting," special-teams coach Mike Westhoff said yesterday after the Jets' 31-13 victory over the Bills. "It wasn't anybody in particular. We weren't crazy about what Polk had to say, so we kind of did get after him a little bit. We didn't need a whole lot of motivation. I'm not a big believer in that, but he certainly provided it."'

Marker Thanks to Spin, Bills Defenders Gather No Moss [4:58 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'Linebacker Sam Cowart delivered a message on the first possession of the game, sniffing out a screen pass from Drew Bledsoe to Henry and bringing down Henry with a facemask-to-facemask collision. Henry blacked out momentarily but missed only two plays.'

Marker Bledsoe is left deflated [4:57 AM]
Newark Star Ledger reports: 'So Bledsoe dinked and Bledsoe dunked. He completed 21 of his 32 passes, but none of them went for more than 19 yards. Running back Travis Henry was the team's leading receiver with seven catches, all on short dumpoffs.'

Marker Pennington's run highlights 4th straight victory [4:56 AM]
Newark Star Ledger reports: 'Refusing to sigh with relief after evening their record last week in Detroit, they dominated a solid Bills squad (5-6), one that entered the game with the NFL's second-ranked passing game and sixth-ranked offense.'

Marker Martin provides that old rush [4:55 AM]
Newark Star Ledger reports: 'He ran for a season-high 120 yards on 21 carries yesterday -- 5.7 yards an attempt. It was his second consecutive game with more than 100 yards, and, most importantly, the Jets beat the Bills, 31-13, for their fourth victory in a row. It is no small coincidence the Jets' rise in the standings has mirrored Martin's return to health.'

Marker Passing the torch to right QB [4:54 AM]
Newark Star Ledger reports: 'This is as close as Testaverde, nothing but class all season, has come to saying he can accept the backup role and is leaning toward working out a deal to stay with the Jets next season. It will mean renegotiating a cut in salary for cap reasons, but Testaverde seems to understand that the Jets have found their quarterback of the present as well as future.'

Marker Defense shuts down Bills [4:53 AM]
Newark Star Ledger reports: 'Henry, who entered the game ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing with 874 yards rushing and nine touchdowns, was held to 83 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries in the Jets' 31-13 victory at Giants Stadium. Henry broke off a 20-yard run in the third quarter, but the Jets held him in check for most of the game.'

Marker Green Light [4:52 AM]
Bergen Record reports: '"Anytime you hold the Bills to 13 points, that's a good day, but even at that we felt we could've done better," Cowart said of that crucial juncture. "We huddled up on the sideline and said, 'Listen, man, do we want to be a great defense? We've got to go out and slam the door.'" Mission accomplished as Bledsoe was sacked by Mo Lewis and Sam Garnes, blitzing out of their "Mohawk" dime front, which features three down linemen. Bledsoe fumbled, with Josh Evans recovering at the Bills' 48. One final three-and-out closed the deal.'

Marker Chad is no faker at winning time [4:51 AM]
Bergen Record reports: 'Had Pennington not gotten into the end zone, the deficit would have remained at 11 and the Bills, while taking over at their own 1, would have had the extra boost from a goal-line stand in their tanks. So it was an important decision by coach Herman Edwards, and an important play call by Hackett.'

Marker Balanced offense, 'D' spark Jets [4:50 AM]
Asbury Park Press/Home News Tribune reports: 'The Jets were almost machine like, both offensively and defensively, in the way they subdued and dismantled Buffalo 31-13 before a sellout crowd at Giants Stadium yesterday.'

Marker Bills' mistakes contribute to lopsided outcome [4:49 AM]
Asbury Park Press/Home News Tribune reports: '"Give New York credit -- they played well, they executed well," the coach said. "We obviously believe that we made too many mistakes. We had some opportunities, though, and we've got to capitalize on those when we're down in there. We've got to do a better job at not turning the ball over and New York, they played well."'

Marker Ground game is starting to pick up steam [4:48 AM]
Asbury Park Press/Home News Tribune reports: 'After amassing a season-high 189 yards on the ground against the Detroit Lions last week, the Jets torched the Buffalo Bills' 26th-ranked run defense for 155 yards in yesterday's 31-13 triumph.'

Marker Jets finally go up big and finish up big [4:47 AM]
Asbury Park Press/Home News Tribune reports: 'The same team that had blown a 21-3 lead and lost to the Browns a month ago was now trifling with the Buffalo Bills, who can score points in a hurry.'

Marker Rewind [4:46 AM]
Asbury Park Press/Home News Tribune reports: 'TURNING POINT: With the scored tied early in the second quarter, Bills cornerback Chris Watson flattened Jets kicker John Hall on a successful field-goal kick. The Jets, with new life and a first down, scored on their second try from the 1.'

Marker Elvis lives, and plays for Jets [4:45 AM]
Albany Times Union reports: '"I think it's just a reflection upon our team, the type of mentality we have right now," Pennington said. "Whatever it takes to get the job done. Pretty, ugly, it doesn't matter."'

Marker Elvis leaves 'em in stitches [4:44 AM]
Middletown Times Herald Record reports: 'The Jets didn't laugh their way through their 31-13 win over Buffalo, though they dominated the Bills with one of their most complete games of the season.'

Marker Chrebet reveals displeasure with reduced role [4:43 AM]
Middletown Times Herald Record reports: 'The Jets limited Bledsoe to 181 passing yards while sacking and intercepting him twice. "The key to football is not giving up the big plays," said Jets cornerback Aaron Beasley, who made one instead.'

Marker Jets top Bills for fourth straight win [4:42 AM]
New Haven Register reports: 'After watching Bills' quarterback Drew Bledsoe repeatedly team up with receivers Peerless Price and Eric Moulds in the season-opener, the Jets shut the trio down yesterday.'

Marker Pennington moves Jets back into contention [4:41 AM]
New Haven Register reports: 'The Jets now appear to be the team that they — and many others — believed themselves to be coming out of training camp.'

Marker Pennington gives Jets D a chance [8:55 PM]
Fox Sports reports: 'People say the defense is better, but it didn't change players. The offense did. It changed quarterbacks, and the Jets simply aren't beating themselves as they did two months ago.'

Marker Pennington's one yard was impressive [7:16 PM]
Fox Sports reports: '“I would’ve thought that, as a team, we would have a bit more of a sense of urgency,” said Buffalo guard Ruben Brown. “We didn’t overcome. But we know we have talent. We know we have good players. We just have to start getting the job done."'

Marker NY Jets 31, Buffalo 13 [6:14 PM]
UPI reports: 'The Jets (6-5) completed a sweep of their AFC East rivals and remained in second place, one game behind the Miami Dolphins (7-4). The loss was the second in a row for the Bills (5-6), who fell into last place in the division and host Miami next week.'

Marker Streaking Jets Win 4th in a Row, Collect Bills 31-13 [4:43 PM] reports: 'The Jets really sealed up Bledsoe and his receivers most of the day. Bledsoe passed for only 181 yards and Eric Moulds, one of the best receivers in the NFL, was held to two catches for 24 yards. Defensive tackle Josh Evans recorded his fifth sack of 2002 and continues to be a force. On the other side of the ball, the Bills let Coles (7-78-1)victimize their secondary.'

Marker Jets 31, Bills 13 [4:24 PM]
AP reports: 'Pennington, however, made the most memorable move of the game. He sent linebacker Eddie Robinson tumbling to the turf with an inside fake on a rollout, then trotted into the end zone for a 1-yard TD to make it 31-13. On fourth down, no less.'

Marker New York Jets 31, Buffalo 13 [4:23 PM]
Sportsticker reports: 'Meanwhile, Buffalo's Drew Bledsoe was intercepted twice and fumbled once. Both of his interceptions led to touchdowns.'

Marker AFC East rivals have designs on postseason [9:26 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"We don't need any extra motivation for this one," quarterback Drew Bledsoe said. "This is a pivotal game in our season. All three (division games) will determine for us where we stand. If we go on a three-game win streak right here, then we're firmly in control."'

Marker Henry thinks duels with top backs are just grand [9:25 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's a challenge," he said. "I follow the backs throughout the league and each week I'm competing, whether it is Priest or Curtis or Antowain. Week in and week out, I'm just going out and trying to compete and show my talent."'
