Buffalo Bills News - September 5, 2005

Marker Leonhard Beats the Odds, Again [7:29 PM] reports: '"It is a huge motivation," he said. "There are a lot people that tell me, 'you're too small to play, you are not going to be able to play there because of your size'. You just have to take that personally and have that chip on your shoulder everyday that you go out there to prove that you can play at this level."'

Marker Ask Him Yourself: Tom Donahoe [7:29 PM] reports: 'How exactly do you plan on feeling secure this season with only four backups at O-line, three of whom are listed as second with one third string? I'm just curious, especially with the multitude of receivers shown on the depth chart...'.

Marker Ask Him Yourself: Mike Mularkey [7:28 PM] reports: 'We were fortunate enough to sign Constantin back to the practice squad to give us our fourth defensive end and in case of a need he's here working with us and working with the defense.'

Marker Bills Complete Practice Squad [7:17 PM] reports: 'The Buffalo Bills signed eight players recently released by the team to their practice squad. Among the players signed include undrafted rookie free agents: tight end Brad Cieslak, linebacker Liam Ezekial, fullback Jon Goldsberry, defensive backs Rob Lee and Evan Oglesby.'

Marker Giddy optimism abounds in Buffalo [7:14 PM]
Niagara Falls Reporter reports: 'And two, anybody who thinks Losman isn't going to make mistakes, and plenty of them, has apparently watched, or at least paid attention to, very little football over the years.'

Marker Bills Start Houston Preparations. Name Practice Sq [7:08 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Nate Clements didn't practice. Mike Mularkey says his shoulder in not serious and they'll evaluate him Wednesday to see if he'll workout. LB Angelo Crowell is in the same situation with a leg problem. Tim Euhus will miss the Texans game with a strained pectoral muscle.'

Marker HS Football 'Coach of the Week' - Week 1 [7:05 PM] reports: 'Coach Tony Truilizio of Riverside High School has been named the Buffalo Bills high school football “Coach of the Week” for the first weekend of the 2005 season (September 2-3).'

Marker WR Reed determined to show Bills were right in keeping him [7:01 PM]
AP reports: 'Reed's role is still not entirely secure. His future will depend on how quickly rookie second-round draft pick Roscoe Parrish returns after having surgery to repair a right wrist injury he hurt in training camp. Parrish, who turned heads with his speed and catching ability before he was hurt, is expected to miss at least the first month of the season.'

Marker OT McFarland among eight players signed to Bills practice squad [1:44 PM]
AP reports: 'McFarland, who appeared in two games last year, was among the final players the Bills cut on Saturday. Other notables making the squad were guard Jasen Esposito and defensive end Constantin Ritzmann, who both spent time with the Bills last year and were also among the players cut Saturday.'

Marker Bills Announce Practice Squad [1:43 PM] reports: 'The Bills have signed the following players to its practice squad...'.

Marker Coaches believe J.P. can succeed in Bills' offense [8:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I think we're better up front than we were last year," Clements said. "There's more depth at receiver. I think the backs will be better than last year. Tight ends are doing well. Then you have essentially a rookie quarterback. The fortunate thing for him is a lot of rookie quarterbacks who play are with teams that don't have that kind of talent surrounding them. So we think we can have a very good offense. It's just going to be a matter of hopefully starting off fast."'

Marker Real pressure falls on Bills' running game [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Losman appears to suffer from sensory overload, which happens when a kid spends too much time in the classroom, not enough on the playground. He looks shaky at best, like many a rookie starter. Bledsoe might be better today, but the Bills are convinced Losman, with more playing time, will take them farther tomorrow.'

Marker Weighty matters [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's definitely a concern," Teague said. "I plan on losing weight when I'm done. There aren't a lot of old men walking around at 300-something pounds. You try to stay in good shape and watch your diet but you've got to be big to play this game. But hopefully when I'm done I'll lose some."'

Marker If Losman falters, don't forget Holcomb [5:00 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Unloading veteran Drew Bledsoe was the right move for the Bills. He had taken them as far as he could in three seasons but wasn't going to improve. It was time to make Losman the starter and hope for the best. Based on Losman's preseason performance, Buffalo fans should be doing more than hoping. They should be praying.'

Marker Bills have a gem in Leonhard [4:59 AM]
Sheboygan Press reports: 'Safety Jim Leonhard made the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent. After watching him emerge as a walk-on from tiny Tony to three-time All-American, this development shouldn’t shock any Badgers fans. The only questions about him are how soon will he lead the NFL in punt returns, and why didn’t the Packers sign him to return kicks?'

Marker Tucker playing waiting game [4:58 AM]
Reading Eagle reports: 'Tucker, 27, was ready to play Friday in the Bills' preseason finale against Detroit. He feared something was wrong when he didn't get in the game.'

Marker Lessons from Buffalo [2:00 PM]
AP reports: '``He was a great head coach, but I couldn't get my hands on him,'' said ex-Bills safety Pierson Prioleau, who joined the Redskins as a free agent this year. ``Having him in the meeting room with you, having him teaching you things on the field, having him teaching you 100 percent of the time on defense, I love that as a player.'' Williams says he has learned his lesson. He is at his best when he is hands-on, and he wasn't in Buffalo. Next time, he'll hire someone else to handle the offense so he can work one-on-one with his defensive players.'

Marker Bills release Berks products Tucker, Esposito [1:37 PM]
Reading Eagle reports: '“It's really out of my control,” said Esposito, 24. “Obviously I'd like to be on a roster somewhere, but if I'm not I'll still be here in Buffalo.”'

Marker Citizen Losman [1:34 PM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Losman didn't wait for us to ask. He tells all who will listen how much he likes Buffalo and Buffalonians. He says that's why he lives downtown year-round. And he sounds sincere - as if this kid from California really gets us.'

Marker Bills to go with young guns on O-line [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The four O-line backups have combined for just one start in the NFL, and three of them essentially are rookies at their positions. However, the rapid progress of both Preston and Peters has been one of the promising developments of the summer for the Bills.'

Marker Question Mark starts Friday [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'If you have a question on the Bills or the NFL in general, Question Mark and he will respond to several questions each week.'

Marker Seven receivers stick with Bills [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'However, by releasing Tucker, the Bills left themselves without a single backup lineman with any experience of note. Greg Jerman is the only backup who has started an NFL game — one with Miami two years ago.'

Marker Haddad, Tucker become Bills’ cut casualties [5:00 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Starting today, the Bills can sign up to eight of those youngsters to their practice squad, but Haddad, and obviously Tucker, don’t fit that criteria.'

Marker Bills Release Tucker, 13 More [4:55 AM]
The Sports Network reports: 'Tucker started 12 games as a Bill last season, and appeared in 28 with Buffalo over the past two seasons. The Princeton product's chances of making the roster were diminished in the offseason, when Buffalo signed free agent guards Mike Gandy and Bennie Anderson and drafted Duke Preston and Justin Geisinger.'

Marker Tucker And Haddad Are Not Part Of The Final 53 [7:43 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'The Bills cut their most consistent receiver in camp in Haddad. The only thing I can think of is he's been hurt a lot while just being on practice squads during his six years around the league. He catches most balls that come his way and didn't have a dropped ball until about ten days ago when he started to drop a few like the whole corp. Haddad had two long punt returns in preseason too. 2nd round pick Roscoe Parrish is on the roster and will miss about three games with wrist surgery. Backing up Eric Moulds and Lee Evans are Josh Reed, Sam Aiken, Jonathan Smith and George Wilson. Reed's habit of dropping balls is worse this year, but he does block very well as does Aiken. Aiken had some nice catches in preseason, but he had streaks of dropped balls in camp too. Wilson pushed his way on the roster making some circus catches in camp and being pretty consistent. Smith had a good final preseason game against the Lions and had a long punt return called back by penalty.'

Marker Versatile OL Tucker among Bills' final cuts [7:35 PM]
AP reports: 'Tucker had been bothered by a back problem after having offseason surgery and missed the first week of training camp. He also missed Buffalo's second preseason game, a 27-7 win against Green Bay. He proved to be the odd man out as the Bills kept four relatively untested backups: tackle Greg Jerman, Jason Peters, fifth-round draft pick Duke Preston and sixth-rounder Justin Geisinger.'

Marker Bills waive 14 players [5:39 PM] reports: '...Drew Haddad...'.

Marker Losman supports NFL players relief fund for Katrina victims [5:16 PM]
AP reports: '"I think that's something the NFL players should accomplish," Losman said. "I've been talking it over right now with a few other players to see who's going to step up and be the leader to get the voices out, to get this money accomplished. And once we get the money, we have to figure out where it goes from there ... We actually have a lot of ideas right now."'

Marker Offense sputters again in loss [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"Things never go as planned, and you've got to roll with it," he said. "I didn't think it was all that bad. It was just one bad throw. I learned today I can't baby a ball into the wind, and it took a right turn on me."'

Marker Reed uneasy with cuts looming [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It could have been better," Reed said of his preseason. "There's some little things that I've got to take care of. But I think I got better this offseason. It's like I'm trying to run before I get the ball. I don't make sure I have a good grip on it and let it slip away from me. The biggest thing is getting over that if it does happen and just move on."'
