Buffalo Bills News - November 18, 2008

Marker Crisis in Orchard Park [1:15 PM]
WHAM-TV reports: 'A month ago Trent Edwards was an MVP candidate. Monday night he was a candidate to be benched for J.P. Losman. Not that the Bills would have ever done that. But they had to consider it. Trent is young. That is obvious. But what made him special before is now gone. The decision making is shot. There is no question he has lost confidence. On Monday night he definitely let what happened early affect him late. These warning signs have quickly become warning flares. Again, in the front office, there must be worries about number 5 as their long term solution at quarterback.'

Marker Monday night misery [11:03 AM]
Canadaigua Daily Messenger reports: 'Edwards was left shaking his head after another disastrous performance.'

Marker At least the ESPN announcers were good [11:00 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Bills fans also might have expected Jaworski to weigh in on the Bills' decision to have three running plays in the final minute to set up Rian Lindell's 47-yard field goal attempt rather than attempt or risk a pass that might have gotten the kick closer. He did say he expected the Bills would play it conservatively, but he didn't say if he agreed with it. It also would have been reasonable of commentator Tony Kornheiser — who acts like ESPN's game-day sports columnist — to raise the L word during the game. You know, J.P. Losman.'

Marker Browns edge Bills on Monday Night Football [8:03 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '“Obviously a disappointing loss for us,” said head coach Dick Jauron. “We had a chance.”'

Marker Special teams gives lift, then falters [8:03 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: 'The Bills’ special teams, which had almost single-handedly kept the team in the game, would now be called upon to win it. In light of Lindell’s past successes it was assumed his kick would be a fitting exclamation point to a night rescued by special teams.'

Marker Edwards’ turnovers overturn Bills’ hopes [8:01 AM]
RealFootball365.com reports: 'It was a horrid early display, as Edwards threw one pick on one attempt, two on three, and three on six; in his defense, he cut his percentage of interceptions in half over that time, although improving to the point where he was committing turnovers on only 50 percent of throws isn’t quite a Pro Bowl rate.'

Marker Immediate Reactions: Not Again [8:00 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'How bad was he? Besides the three interceptions in the first 11-and-a-half minutes? Well, he played scared, which is the worst kind of quarterbacking to play, or watch. Edwards was so gunshy that of his 16 completions, 10 went to his feature back, Marshawn Lynch, and I'm not sure more than three were clearly past the line of scrimmage.'

Marker Bills lose to Browns 29-27 [7:59 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'The Bills have now lost four-striaght and are 5-5 on the season, which is last in the AFC East. Their playoff chances took a major hit as there are four teams at 6-4 in the conference along with the four division leaders.'

Marker Picked apart [7:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Talk about taking the air out of the charged-up sellout crowd.'

Marker Gaining traction [7:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Then a great run after the catch by Marshawn Lynch got the Bills back into the game. It was a short swing pass that Lynch caught at the line of scrimmage. It looked like Lynch broke a bunch of tackles. But actually it was just nifty cuts toward the middle of the field and a burst of speed up the middle that allowed him to elude at least five Browns. Lynch bulled into the end zone for an 18-yard TD catch. It was Lynch’s first TD reception of his career.'

Marker Mr. Automatic [7:04 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Phil Dawson might as well be the Abominable Snowman as far as the Buffalo Bills are concerned.'

Marker Wide right [7:04 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills played it conservative on their final drive when they got down to the Cleveland 34 after a 22-yard pass from Trent Edwards to Robert Royal. They ran three straight Lynch runs into the line that gained 2 yards apiece. The way Edwards’ night was going, should they have put the ball in his hands and let him throw downfield? Hmm. In hindsight, some sort of safe short pass would have been preferable to putting all the heat on Lindell.'

Marker Bills-Browns Report Card [7:03 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Passing game: F: Edwards is regressing, threw three interceptions in first quarter to put team in big hole. Anyone seen Lee Evans, by the way?'

Marker NFL boss upbeat on Bills fans’ passion [7:02 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“It’s going to depend on your passion for this team,” he told the crowd in the HSBC Arena Harbour Club, citing the team’s regionalization efforts that have helped expand its market to the Southern Tier, Rochester and Southern Ontario.'

Marker Bills' field goal try to win misses in final minute [6:17 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills got in position for a 47-yard field goal try by Rian Lindell with 38 seconds left but the kick sailed just barely wide to the right.'

Marker Dawson's field goal drives spike in Bills' hopes [6:16 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I naturally get the ball up pretty high anyway," he said. "I was more focused on the line. I had a 50-plus against Washington to tie it and I got it too much and left the ball out to the right, which you do when you overstride. I was concentrating on staying short, trusting my technique and hitting the ball well."'

Marker McKelvin finally breaks through on return [6:15 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'What he did Monday night was even more impressive when you consider the opponent. The Browns entered the game ranked third in the NFL in kickoff coverage. Bills special teams coach Bobby April said last week that Cleveland had the best combined return and coverage units in the NFL based on his own 22-category formula.'

Marker Bills' offense produces yawns across the nation [6:14 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Trent Edwards rarely looks more than 10 yards downfield anymore, pressured or not. He surrendered any inclination he might have had for venturing deeper into the secondary after throwing three first-quarter interceptions against the Cleveland Browns, one off a deflection, the other two off inexplicably poor decisions.'

Marker Free fall from grace starts with quarterback [6:13 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'How much more can Bills fans take? How many more of these heart-wrenching losses can people absorb before they throw their hands in the air and swear off football once and for all?'

Marker Whitner returns, then exits with shoulder injury [6:12 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'However, Whitner only got through half the game as he re-injured his right shoulder and stayed in the locker room after halftime.'

Marker Bills fall to Browns on another wide right [6:11 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Their season is on the brink and they may need to win out if they hope to qualify for the postseason for the first time in nine years.'

Marker Edwards' slump dragging Buffalo Bills down [6:10 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'And it all might have added up to a season-saving victory if Rian Lindell had not pulled a Scott Norwood and Trent Edwards not continued producing more turnovers than a bakery.'

Marker Buffalo Bills turned to Lynch too late [6:09 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'It left you thinking ... where would this season be had Lynch gotten 33 touches every game?'

Marker Buffalo Bills report card [6:09 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Trent Edwards started a red-hot 6-for-6. Unfortunately for the Bills, three of his completions were to the Browns, giving him seven picks in his past four games.'

Marker Bills afraid to succeed yet again [6:08 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: 'He says it, and says it and says it so often that you’re prone to believe him, but let the record now stand corrected, no matter how many times he’s regurgitated the line — Trent Edwards is not a confident quarterback.'

Marker Goodell says Bills’ future lays in the hands of fans [6:07 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: '“I think tradition and history is very important. I think the passion of the fans here is important. But ultimately it comes down, can the team continue to be successful here? And I believe it can because of the passion of our fans in this region,” Goodell is quoted as saying in an article by Andrew Fillipponi of local radio station WGR. “I believe the steps the Bills are taking to regionalize this team are broadening out the interest in the team. Hopefully this will attract more people to support the Bills.”'

Marker Bills by quarter [6:06 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: 'Bills ran three times with the ball on the 30-yard line.'

Marker Quinn a Cleveland Brown for a reason [6:05 AM]
Dunkirk Observer reports: '"I am here for a reason," Quinn said. "I don't know what that reason is. All I can do is hope and think in an optimistic manner that I am going to be the guy and change the time for the Cleveland Browns."'

Marker What quitters? Browns show fight as Bills go wide right [5:41 AM]
USA Today reports: 'The game was billed as the Battle of Lake Erie but seemed more a comedy of errors, complete with turnovers, dropped passes, bad penalties and badly off-target passes. "It wasn't all pretty, but it was good enough on this night," Crennel said.'
