Buffalo Bills News - September 20, 2005

Marker Loss in Tampa Not Unexpected [8:31 AM] reports: 'It’s Sunday, week 2 of the NFL season, and there are 200+ Bills fans shouting for joy inside the Harp, home of the Bills Backers Boston chapter. Josh Reed has just made a nice catch. The place erupts. Passersby on the street are surprised to see a happy mass of buffalo-bedecked fans yelling and clapping, eyes glued to the TV sets and drinks in hand. Surely the spontaneous burst of applause and delight signaled some great feat on the gridiron, but sadly it did not.'

Marker Vick's status questionable [8:30 AM]
Atlanta Journal Constitution reports: 'The hamstring injury that caused Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick to come out during the final two drives of Sunday's 21-18 loss to Seattle could keep him out of this weekend's game at Buffalo.'

Marker Fletcher's real pain was watching from sidelines [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"In my eight-year career, I've never come out of a game based on an injury," said Fletcher, one of the NFL's leading run stuffers, who left Sunday's game late in the second quarter, just as Cadillac's engine was starting to warm up. "As you can imagine, it hurt. It hurt a lot, especially to see them run the ball on us. I take responsibility in the run-stopping aspect of the game, and not to be able to help out, well, it doesn't feel good at all."'

Marker Are the Bills a .500 club with Losman? [5:00 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Mularkey and general manager Tom Donahoe like to steal from their beloved Steelers, but copy-catting the Roethlisberger blueprint is living in fantasy land. What we saw on Sunday is more the norm for young QBs in the NFL. Get out your yo-yos.'

Marker Was J.P.'s Bay Benching Bummer or Boost? [4:59 AM]
WGRZ-TV reports: 'But Losman will be alright. I thought he had all the right “stuff” when the Bills drafted him, and nothing has changed my mind.'

Marker Bills Nursing Injuries [10:09 PM] reports: 'Fletcher injured a hamstring in the second quarter of the Bills 19-3 loss to the Bucs. He claims to be a fast healer and hasn't missed a game in his eight year career.'

Marker Bills LB Fletcher, RG Williams nursing injuries [5:32 PM]
AP reports: 'Williams did not return after hurting his left ankle in the third quarter Sunday. Coach Mike Mularkey said he'll know more about Williams' status when the team returns to practice on Wednesday.'

Marker Ask Him Yourself: Mike Mularkey [5:30 PM] reports: '...we've attempted to throw downfield. When you throw it downfield you have to drop deeper and if the defense is blitzing you have to make "hot" throws because of the blitz. That's what happened Sunday. Long throws are in the plan.'

Marker Ask Him Yourself: Tom Donahoe [5:29 PM] reports: 'We don't really feel that our efforts to develop J.P. Losman are sacrificing the future of the team. While Sunday's game was not what any of us wanted, the blame should not be placed totally on the quarterback. The only way a player at any position becomes productive in this league is by playing. Last week, after JP's performance against Houston, some people wanted to canonize him. We have to be patient with any of our young players to give them the opportunity to develop.'

Marker HS Football Coach of the Week - Week 3 [5:29 PM] reports: 'Coach Al Cavagnaro of Starpoint High School has been named the Buffalo Bills High School Football “Coach of the Week” for the third weekend of the 2005 season (September 16-17).'

Marker Bills melt in Florida heat [4:52 PM]
Tonawanda News reports: '“We played against a good football team that was better than us today,” Bills coach Mike Mularkey said. “Maybe it’s a wake-up call for us.”'

Marker Bills crash back to earth [4:51 PM]
Niagara Gazette reports: 'Granted, the Bills' offense, which held the ball for only 21 minutes, 10 seconds as compared to Tampa Bay's 38:50, didn't help give the Buffalo defense much of a rest by continually going three-and-out, but the defense didn't help its own cause. The Bills' defense talked about helping out young quarterback J.P. Losman by creating turnovers and giving the offense some good field position. But that's all it was -- talk.'

Marker J.P.'S bumbling triggers pummeling [2:44 PM]
Niagara Falls Reporter reports: 'Bills MVP: Um, Lindell made his only kick.'

Marker Vick to undergo MRI [12:50 PM]
Atlanta Journal Constitution reports: 'Michael Vick is scheduled to go through a battery of tests today, including an MRI, to determine the severity of damage to his left hamstring. Falcons coach Jim Mora said he's optimistic Vick will play Sunday at Buffalo, but until the team gets results of the tests, Vick is listed as questionable for this weekend.'

Marker Plenty of lowlights for Bills in loss to Buccaneers [11:54 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'For one series in the fourth quarter, head coach Mike Mularkey benched Losman in favor of veteran Kelly Holcomb. “I put Kelly and Shaud (Williams, backup running back) in there to see if we could get a spark at both positions. We were stagnant all day and (I was) just trying to get something going.” To which Losman responded, “I’m upset ... I don’t want to share this position. But this is a team game and I realize I’m young and the coaches know what’s best for me.”'

Marker Bills-Bucs Postgame Notes [11:24 AM] reports: 'With today's loss, Buffalo snapped their 5-game winning streak against NFC opponents.'

Marker Steam rolled [9:01 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'For the next three hours, the Buccaneers seemed to know exactly where the Bills wanted to go, they usually were waiting for the Bills to get there, and Losman couldn't figure out what to do about it.'

Marker Cadillac gets good mileage on Bills' defense [9:00 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"He broke our back today, especially on those long runs," Bills free safety Troy Vincent said. "He is a guy that you can't count on going down until you are sitting on top of him."'

Marker This horror show has many stars [8:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Sorry, but when Josh Reed is your most effective offensive weapon, something is wrong.'

Marker Bucs' D proves its mettle [8:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bucs played like they had something to prove, holding the Bills to just 147 total yards - only 47 on the ground - and keeping the opportunistic Buffalo offense out of the end zone for the first time in eight games, dating to a 29-6 defeat at New England last Nov. 14. The Bucs, in fact, have not allowed a touchdown on defense in two games this season, having forced five turnovers in last weekend's 24-13 victory at Minnesota.'

Marker Grading the Bills [8:56 AM]

Marker Grading the Bucs [8:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Gruden made good use of his 3:17 a.m. wake-up calls. Kiffin made Losman's life miserable. Maybe these Bucs are for real.'

Marker Bills Offense Never Gets Going [7:25 AM]
Lakeland Ledger reports: '"They blitzed more than we expected them to," said wide receiver Eric Moulds. "We expected them to come out and play similar to what they did at Minnesota in the first game. But they came out and totally shocked us as far as when they started blitzing. They had a great game plan and they executed it."'

Marker Road woes return in painful fashion for Buffalo [5:05 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Before padding his statistics during one final possession in garbage time, Losman was a mere 5 of 18 for 39 yards, including 3 of 10 on third down throws, many alarmingly off target even when he had time to throw.'
