Buffalo Bills News - October 14, 2004

Marker Not even Cox gets riled up for Bills-Fish [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Cox said he has fond memories of the Miami-Buffalo rivalry. It was fun. It mattered because one or both of the teams were contenders. But the Bills won so often it ripped his heart out. It wasn't Buffalo he really hated but losing all the time. "I hated those guys," he said, "but it was so one-sided. I have friends on that Buffalo team now. I would never have talked to any of those Bills back then. Now Andre Reed and I have become friends. I see Jim Kelly now, too. Back then, I didn't get close to any opponent. I wanted it to be a hate-hate relationship."'

Marker Milloy practices, but he's unlikely to play [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I'm just really happy to get back out there with the fellas," Milloy said. "I think mentally I'll be sharp, but there are still some physical things that I need to go out there and practice."'

Marker Milloy returns to practice [5:04 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'He did not rule out returning to the lineup Sunday when the 0-4 Bills host the 0-5 Miami Dolphins to crown the AFC Least champion. He's listed as questionable on the injury report but realistically he remains another week or two away. But there's no question that Wednesday was a big step for him.'

Marker Dolphins' collapse outrages fans [5:03 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Losing is a foreign concept and a spoiled fan base that has seen their Dolphins post a sub- .500 record just twice in the 35 years since the AFL-NFL merger the Bills have 16 such seasons is having a difficult time coping with the Dolphins' 0-5 start.'

Marker Bills send receiver Shaw packing [5:02 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'In last week's 16-14 loss to the New York Jets, Shaw was Bledsoe's intended target on four third-down pass attempts but only one was completed. Shaw also had a missed assignment that resulted in a pass glancing off his back on first down. Mularkey said Shaw, who was signed through 2005, was also not productive enough in practice and in team meetings.'

Marker Surprise: Winless Bills are favored by 6 1/2 [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'The explanation is simple: The Bills are a decent team with a lousy record and the Dolphins are just plain lousy.'

Marker Inside slant [5:00 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'Instead, he said Shaw's production - in practice, in team meetings, in games - had fallen to the point where he felt it was necessary to release him. The move bumps second-year man Sam Aiken up the depth chart and practice squad member Drew Haddad will be promoted.'

Marker Strategy and personnel [4:59 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'Milloy, who shattered his right forearm during a preseason game at Indianapolis on Aug. 28, began practicing in live drills on a limited basis and working with the scout team on Wednesday. He did not rule himself out of the Dolphins game, but a realistic return is in a week or two.'

Marker Notes, quotes [4:58 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'SS Pierson Prioleau's nit-picky pass interference penalty in the end zone on the Jets' Santana Moss is still a topic of conversation.'

Marker The rush is on ... [4:57 AM]
Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel reports: '"You get big eyes going into this game," said defensive end David Bowens, who might be the only Dolphins player not fearing a little public gloating. "He's been hit at least 40 times and sacked 19 this year. Any time you get a quarterback that isn't mobile and with us blitzing and with our athletic ability, we have a pretty good chance of getting a couple more sacks."'

Marker Devalued Bill [4:56 AM]
Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel reports: 'He has had one 300-yard game in his past 24 games.'

Marker Buffalo even worse than Miami [4:55 AM]
Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel reports: '"I don't think Buffalo can score 20 points the way they're playing," he said. "Plus Miami's got a great defense. I don't think it will give up 20 points."'

Marker Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins [4:53 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'It won't be pretty, but it will be a 13-6 Bills win.'

Marker QB Brown in, Hamilton out [4:52 AM]
Indianapolis Star reports: 'The 6-3, 212-pound Brown spent the past three seasons with Buffalo. His last appearance came during the preseason when the Bills visited the RCA Dome. Brown suffered an injury to his left knee when he was tackled by the Colts' Durrand Roundtree. "He's healthy now and . . . we're happy to have him," Dungy said of the former Northern Arizona quarterback.'

Marker Miami (0-5) at Buffalo (0-4) [9:55 PM]
AP reports: '``If we realize how to win games in the clutch, we could be 4-0 or at least 2-2,'' Bills offensive lineman Ross Tucker said. ``You just learn to do it by doing it. And we will.'''

Marker Fiedler uncertain about availability against Bills [9:29 PM]
AP reports: 'Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler said Wednesday he's uncertain whether a cracked rib will prevent him from playing Sunday at Buffalo. If Fiedler doesn't start, A.J. Feeley said he'll be ready to step in. Both were listed as questionable on the injury report, but Feeley was more optimistic about his availability after recovering from a concussion in Sunday's 24-10 loss at New England.'

Marker Bills & Verizon Fight Domestic Violence [9:06 PM] reports: 'The first 1,000 fans to donate a phone at any of the 10 gates as they enter Ralph Wilson Stadium will receive a poster featuring HopeLine spokesperson, linebacker London Fletcher.'

Marker Milloy Suits-Up for Practice [9:05 PM] reports: '"It's been a long process and every week I've been getting better," Milloy said. "At the beginning of this process I kept asking the doctors, 'how long until I'll be able to come back?' and they kept shooting me down for my own safety. I got to the point where I just stop asking and focused on getting better."'

Marker Bills Release WR Bobby Shaw [9:04 PM] reports: 'Mularkey said Shaw's release wasn't meant to send a message to the team. Rather, the coaching staff felt they could improve the production level with his roster spot. "When I say production, it is game, practice, meetings, and anything affiliated with what you do with your job," said Mularkey.'

Marker Bills Release Bobby Shaw [8:57 PM] reports: 'Mike Mularkey said Shaw was cut for his lack of production on the field, at practice and in meetings.'

Marker Bills Release Bobby Shaw [8:54 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Mularkey also went on to say that it could mean more time for Sam Aiken or Drew Haddad (who is currently on the practice squad).'

Marker Colts sign new QB, release Hamilton [8:51 PM]
AP reports: The Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Travis Brown to their practice squad Wednesday and released former Georgia Tech star Joe Hamilton.

Marker Bills S Milloy practices for first time in 6 weeks [8:44 PM]
AP reports: 'The Bills have upgraded Milloy's status on their injury report, listing him as questionable. Coach Mike Mularkey described Milloy as a day-to-day decision, saying he wants to see the player become comfortable in a competitive setting.'

Marker Unhappy with his production, Bills release WR Shaw [8:41 PM]
AP reports: 'He had managed just five catches for 59 yards this season.'

Marker Agent: Bills release WR Shaw [3:31 PM]
AP reports: 'Shaw's agent Frank Bauer told The Associated Press that his client arrived for practice when he was informed to clean out his locker and await being cut or traded. Bauer said the team had until 1 p.m. to trade Shaw, or he would be released. ''Any time a team's struggling, there's a tendency to make some changes,'' Bauer said. ''But this one catches Bobby and me both by surprise. ... Maybe they were trying to send a message.'''

Marker Buffalo's offensive shake-up dislodges Shaw [3:05 PM]
ESPN reports: The Buffalo Bills made their first front-office reaction to owner Ralph Wilson's public frustration about an offense he labeled as boring. In a strange move Wednesday morning, the team order wide receiver Bobby Shaw to clear out his locker and await either a release or trade by 1 p.m.

Marker Bills vs. Dolphins Preview [12:45 PM] reports: Wow! How far has this rivalry fallen? The Bills and Dolphins is usually a game circled on many fans of both team's calendars. This year, it is a battle of the only two remaining winless teams in the entire league.

Marker Same old story for the Bills [12:44 PM]
Wellsville Daily Reporter reports: 'It's now or never for the Bills with the easiest part of the schedule coming over the next three weeks with a Ravens squad that will be without the suspended Jamal Lewis and the 1-4 Cardinals coming after Miami before looking for revenge against the Jets on Nov. 7. But as abysmal as things look right now, a win on Sunday would put the Bills at 1-4, the same record the Tennessee Titans had in 2002 on their way to an 11-5 record and AFC Championship appearance.'

Marker Teague forced to sit and watch [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I hadn't missed an offensive play in three years before I got hurt," said Teague, whose string of 35 straight starts with the Bills is the longest of the offensive linemen. "It's just one of those things that happened. It's unfortunate, but my main concern is getting back as soon as possible and help us get a win."'
