Buffalo Bills News - January 28, 2015

Marker New DC Thurman has tough act to top [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“They did an excellent job,” Thurman said of the Bills’ defenders in 2014. “There is talent on this defense up front, at linebacker and in the secondary. Our job is to put that talent in the best position to give them an opportunity to be successful. That’s all we’ve ever tried to do.”'

Marker Roman ready to tackle Bills' offense [1:58 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"We've been evaluating the entire roster and EJ and Jeff, we've got some film on both of them and we're going through it," said Roman. "Both of them possess skills to play the position, and I think we're just going to focus on rolling the balls on the field, working with them, and going from there. Everything else at this point is water cooler talk."'

Marker Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman says EJ Manuel will have 'clean slate' [1:57 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"Whatever we end up being, whatever we end up looking like, is going to be a reflection of what our players can do," Roman said. "It might look a lot of different ways. Maybe our tight end position gets a little beefed up, we like our receiver position, where does a fullback fit in to all this? It might look a lot of different ways, but ultimately, we're going to try to do what our players do well, try to minimize what your players don't do well."'

Marker Bills running back Anthony Dixon played the 2014 on a partially torn meniscus [1:56 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'Dixon later tweeted that he expects to come back stronger from the surgery. He better hope so given the current state of the Bills' backfield. With Fred Jackson entering the final season of his contract and getting up there in age and C.J. Spiller getting set to hit free agency, the Bills could be relying on the depth of Bryce Brown and Dixon. Buffalo will likely add another running back through free agency or the draft to provide some competition as well.'

Marker Why should Buffalo Bills' fans trust Greg Roman's commitment to the run? [1:55 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"I think we want to build a team that kind of reflects the city of Buffalo," Roman said. "I think part of that is being smart, tough and making Buffalo a place that nobody wants to come in December, January, etc. I think if you can exert your will at the line of scrimmage, it's going to open up a lot of other things in the offense. To simply say we're just going to run the football, well nobody simply runs the football. We want to run the football to a level where people respect and fear us and our ability to do so. That will help everything else in the offense open up. It will help us control the game, which is ultimately what we want to do."'

Marker Greg Roman to give Bills quarterback EJ Manuel a clean slate [1:54 AM]
AP reports: 'General manager Doug Whaley previously said he intends to add one and potentially two quarterbacks this offseason. Until that happens, Roman can only focus on the players he has.'

Marker Bills officially introduce OC Roman, DC Thurman [1:53 AM]
WGR-AM reports: '"We want to run the football to a level where people respect and fear us in our ability to do so," the new Bills OC said. "That will help everything else in the offense open up and help us control the game which is ultimately what we want to do."'

Marker Bills' Roman says clean slate on the way for EJ Manuel [1:52 AM]
WGR-AM reports: '"I'm not going to get into specifics. but I definitely think he's done some very good things and displayed some good traits. We just have to get his level of consistency a little bit greater. Really, he and everybody else, once we get thru this evaluation process, we're going to have a very clean slate, once we get going because what they might have been asked to do or done in the past is really not relevant to what we may or may not ask them to do. So to sit here and pontificate about this that and the other, is a little premature."'

Marker 10 reasons to be excited about the new Bills coordinators [1:51 AM] reports: '“We want to be aggressive because we don’t want to sit back and let the offense dictate to us. We want to dictate play to them,” said Thurman.'

Marker Ryan adds to Bills coaching staff [1:59 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Palmer is the most interesting of the hires. He has 22 years of NFL coaching experience and last worked as offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in 2011 and 2012. Over his career, Palmer spent two seasons as the head coach for the Cleveland Browns and seven seasons as an offensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans.'

Marker Adam Schefter says it's 'too early' to say Doug Marrone made a mistake by bailing on Bills [1:58 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"He'll be, I believe, at the top of the list of candidates next year," Schefter continued. "If he doesn't get a head coaching job ever again, he made a colossal mistake. Colossal. If he doesn't get a head coaching job in the next year or two? Huge mistake. But let's see how it plays out. People are ripping on him. Hey, he's got $4 million in his pocket, he's got whatever Jacksonville is paying him. He walks into a situation where there was no quarterback, was no one, and now he starts over. He rolled the dice a little bit and we'll see how it plays out. It's too early to say he made a mistake."'

Marker Siena poll: Buffalo Bills fans happy with hire of Rex Ryan to replace Doug Marrone [1:57 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'However, fans aren't quite as sold on the Bills' ability to crack the postseason in 2015: Only 49 percent of those polled think the Bills will end their playoff drought next season.'

Marker C.J. Spiller awaits “March Madness” should he test free agency [1:56 AM]
Charleston Post and Courier reports: '“Physically, I’m back to 100 percent, back to doing normal activities,” Spiller told The Post and Courier on Friday. “As far as football, free agency will start in March, and I’ll get with my people next week and get a game plan together.”'

Marker Jim Schwartz waiting for right opportunity to continue coaching [1:55 AM]
Baltimore Sun reports: '"He knows what he is doing," said Buffalo's Donnie Henderson, one of the NFL's top secondary coaches. "From the first time he walked into the room, you knew he knew the game and how to play it. He won't be out there long, somebody is going to hire him as a coordinator or head coach again."'

Marker Bills hire Kromer, 5 others to coaching staff [1:54 AM]
AP reports: 'The Bills announced Monday they also hired Michael Hamlin as a special teams quality control coach, Sanjay Lal as wide receivers coach, Anthony Lynn as a running backs coach, D'Anton Lynn as a defensive assistant and Chris Palmer as a senior offensive assistant.'

WGR-AM reports: 'Palmer is the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns and last served as an offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans. He has 22 years of coaching experience in the NFL. Lal, along with both Anthony Lynn and D'Anton Lynn, will all join the Bills staff after having been with Rex Ryan and the New York Jets last season.'

Marker Bills hire six new assistant coaches, retain four [1:52 AM] reports: 'Head coach Rex Ryan has secured the services of ten assistant coaches - four retained from the previous regime - to continue filling out his coaching staff.'

Marker 2014: A year of defensive excellence [1:51 AM] reports: 'While the Bills stood fourth in points per game allowed, when you strip down Buffalo’s points allowed to those only scored by opposing offenses, the Bills ranked second in the league allowing just 271 on the year. It was a sizable improvement from 2013 when Buffalo ranked 20th in that category.'

Buffalo News reports: 'Ryan received an overwhelming majority of support, with 70 percent of respondents saying the Bills made a good decision to hire the brash former coach of the New York Jets. Just 9 percent of respondents thought it was a bad decision.'

Marker Poll: Majority favors downtown stadium for Bills [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'In contrast, many of those in the poll see Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park as past its prime despite $130 million in renovations just last year.'

Marker Spin-off of downtown stadium depends on ‘destination’ appeal [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'In fact, the consultant – the Los Angeles-based architectural firm AECOM – agreed in the case of the Orchard Park site, which lacks the potential for economic spin-off because of access and its remote location.'

January 24, 2015

Marker Can downtown handle 60,000 fans? [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'While a downtown stadium has plenty of advocates, including the Buffalo Common Council, any plan to build there would require decision-makers to take stock of infrastructure, highways and mass transit and make them better. The consultant, the Los Angeles-based architectural firm AECOM, recommends tens of million of dollars in improvements to surrounding roads, walkways and rails.'

Marker Ranking quarterbacks for the Buffalo Bills, and 5 things we learned from 2015 Senior Bowl [1:58 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'Tier one: 1. Garrett Grayson, Colorado State; 2. Bryce Petty, Baylor.'

Marker Q&A with Buffalo Bills' general manager Doug Whaley from 2015 Senior Bowl [1:59 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'It's the Buffalo Bills' guy. He's going to be great for the organization, from the fans to the scouting staff, to the players, to the region. I feel comfortable, when we went through the process, that the Pegulas were looking for somebody like that. Russ (Brandon) and I kind of gathered the sheep as they say and said, 'Who are the best guys out there?' and led them through the process, and we were all on board. It got to a point where early in the process everyone was kind of having sleepless nights and it was restless, and then after a while once we started getting some rest and saying alright, then we met with Rex and we said we have to bring this guy back in. It was a good process, but again, it's a process for the Buffalo Bills as a whole.'

Marker Doug Whaley on why Bryce Brown didn't play much in 2014 and what Bills expect in 2015 [1:58 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"They did a lot of switching in and out," Whaley said. "It seemed like every time a guy would make a big run, they would substitute. I think it was just the rotation of it. Then with Fred (Jackson) being here the longest and knowing the offense the most, I think they felt in certain situations, more comfortable having him out there. But we're excited this year coming in with the emphasis and commitment to the run game. There's going to be a rotation, but I don't think it's going to be as quick for guys. I think they'll be able to stay in and get a feel for what they're doing and get in a groove."'

Marker Doug Whaley breaks down Buffalo Bills' needs heading into free agency, NFL Draft [1:57 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"I look at it this way: There's not one position we wouldn't take or try to upgrade," Whaley said Tuesday from the Senior Bowl. "We could use another receiver, you could use obviously offensive line interior, quarterback we'll have to add. If a dynamic tight end is out there or a running back. If we look to defense, those guys are going to come in and give us depth and hopefully be in the system a year or two from now to start contributing."'

Marker Why Doug Whaley, Arie Kouandjio remain confident in Bills' lineman Cyrus Kouandjio [1:56 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"He had a slow start of camp and he fell behind," Whaley said Tuesday from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. "There were some mitigating circumstances because of that, but once he settled in and got comfortable, he started moving around and looking like the player we saw coming out of Alabama. We're excited to see him next year, and it's going to be interesting. If he steps up, and with Seantrel and (left tackle) Cordy (Glenn) and we get (guard) Chris Williams back and (center Eric) Wood, we think it should help us and improve our line play."'

Marker Personnel dept. committed to solving QB spot [1:55 AM] reports: '“It all starts at quarterback to build a roster and then the draft is always the most important thing to me,” said Monos. “It’s challenging. We’re not going to back down. We’re going to meet this challenge head on. We’re going to bring guys in to compete with EJ (Manuel) and Jeff Tuel and see what happens.”'

January 22, 2015

Marker Whaley feeling positive about Bills’ new direction [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“If we’re talking about how we want to build this team, he can finish my sentence, I can finish his because it’s the same philosophy,” Whaley said. “And it’s a philosophy, I think especially in our division, and where we play, that represents not only the fan base, but the community and the region as a whole. And that’s tough, physical bullies that are going to impose their will on another team. That’s just what I subscribe to.”'
