Buffalo Bills News - July 22, 2014

Marker Bills' backup QB battle is on [2:15 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Any time Tuel's name was brought up and the Bills were asked what they would like to see from him, some variation of the words 'he needs to get stronger,' was used. The second-year quarterback took it to heart, nailed down a program with the training staff to get leaner in the offseason and has come back to the Bills with a new physique.'

Marker Travel delays push back Dareus' return to Bills [2:13 PM]
AP reports: 'Dareus was scheduled to return to camp in time for practice Tuesday morning. But the team says his flight was canceled by bad weather in North Carolina. He is scheduled to arrive at camp in suburban Rochester, New York, later in the day.'

Marker Bills' sloppy offense concerns Marrone [2:12 PM]
The Sports Xchange reports: '"It's never just what you see. You always have to have a basis," said Manuel. "We're a progression-based offense and you always are going to go through your progressions someway, somehow. So if nobody is open, do a realistic thing, throw it away or take off and run."'

Marker Dareus delayed in getting back to Bills camp [2:12 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Adding another layer to the story, Dareus also hasn't been able to take the field for the team after a failed conditioning test on Saturday. The team said they'll continue to evaluate him and determine when they believe he'll be ready to take the test again. No timetable has been given, but the Bills remained confident that he'll get back on the field.'

Marker Bills will be without two for ''period of time'' [2:11 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Cornerback Brandon Smith and linebacker Darrin Kitchens, each who were injured during Monday afternoon's practice, have suffered what head coach Doug Marrone termed a "lower body injury."'

Marker Bills center optimistic about QB and OL [2:10 PM]
WGR-AM reports: '"Luckily we have a lot of familiar faces back" Wood said. "We have Chris Williams at left guard, that’s our only new addition once Cordy gets back. We have pretty good chemistry or should have with that starting five. The good thing is we have a lot of talented back ups now and they’re competing for starting jobs. If they can beat out one of the starters that will mean they’re playing pretty good ball."'

Marker Doug Marrone: ''It's a new year'' [2:10 PM] reports: 'Just because we did some good things last year doesn’t mean we’re necessarily going to be able to do that again. We still have to come in and commit to working hard and trying to establish that. It’s a new year, if you think you’re just going to roll out there and run the ball well, that couldn't be further from the truth. Every year you have to go back out and build a foundation, and it’s going to take a while. Today was the first day in pads, and this is something that will develop as we go along in camp.'

Marker EJ Manuel: ''It felt like a lot of action today'' [2:09 PM] reports: 'I thought we did lean on the passing game. It just so happened that we ran the ball very good. Anytime you’re second in the league (in rushing) and 28th or 29th in passing, obviously you’re going to think it’s a true imbalance. But I think the way Coach (Nathaniel) Hackett calls plays is very balanced. Obviously, just when we have opportunities to connect, that’s when we need to execute it. I don’t think it’s him calling different plays or the balance was off as far as his play calling. I think it’s more so us executing the passing game better.'

Marker Some things to look for at Bills camp [12:06 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Start with the fact that Buffalo’s first-round draft pick, wide receiver Sammy Watkins is the real deal.'

Marker The pressure is on Bills QB Manuel [9:18 AM]
Canandaigua Daily Messenger reports: 'The Florida State product is in a very different situation than he was last summer. A year ago, Manuel was learning a new offense from a new coaching staff, adjusting to new teammates and battling for the starting quarterback position with veteran Kevin Kolb. This year, coaches named Manuel the starter before practices began and he appears to be more comfortable around his teammates and the media.'

Marker Williams finds his happy place with the Bills [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Williams appears to have found his happy place after a sometimes tumultuous first two years with the Bills. While his on-the-field play has mostly lived up to what the team hoped for when it signed him to a contract worth up to $96 million in 2012, Williams made reference to the off-the-field issues he’s gone through.'

Marker Roosevelt receives another chance as former UB star returns [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'He faces a stiff challenge in doing so with the Bills, who are deep at receiver. “Definitely intense,” Roosevelt said of the atmosphere after his first practice. “It’s definitely good competition. I think when there’s good competition like that, it makes everybody better.”'

Marker Sammy goes deep [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Once again, it was the Sammy Watkins Show. The rookie receiver from Clemson wowed the crowd with his speed, twice getting behind defenders for long touchdown passes from EJ Manuel, once in one-on-one drills and again in 11-on-11 work.'

Marker Sammy Watkins dazzles at Bills camp [1:56 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Might this have been a prelude to the upcoming Bills’ season? Fans sure hope so. So does the coaching staff, for that matter.'

Marker Buffalo native Naaman Roosevelt rejoins the Bills [1:55 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'He spent the past two seasons on NFL practice squads, with the Detroit Lions last season and the Cleveland Browns in 2012.'

Marker EJ Manuel getting comfortable with Sammy Watkins [1:54 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'Watkins may be stealing the show early in camp, but there have been plenty of developments in the first two practices.'

Marker Toronto native Stefan Charles doesn't see why anyone would want to move Bills from Buffalo [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"I like it here, so I don't see why the Bills would want to leave here," he said. "The fans are great, the city's great."'

Marker Sammy Watkins injury: Bills rookie gets poked in the eye at practice [1:52 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'The Bills have already had some bad luck with injuries, so watching Watkins go down put a scare into them for a second. Luckily the rookie won't miss a beat.'

Marker Bills receiving little love from national media [1:51 AM]
Watertown Daily Times reports: 'For a successful season — which is now measured by making the playoffs for the first time since 1999 — everything rides on Manuel’s ability. It’s only his second season but he’s under the gun to produce to make the franchise attractive for a potential buyer. Let’s hope it’s not either rocker Jon Bon Jovi, who wants to move the team to Toronto, or loudmouth Donald Trump, who would initiate the Buffalo Shuffle, namely “firing” a massive amount of on-and-off personnel.'

Marker Bon Jovi 'would do the right thing', keep Bills in Buffalo: Jaworski [1:51 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: '"I know for a fact Jon never said he was going to move the team to Toronto," Jaworski said in an interview at St. John Fisher College, before the Bills' afternoon practice. "I think there was much speculation because people tried to read the tea leaves and said he's talking to guys from Toronto, so he must be trying to move the team to Toronto.'

Marker Continually troubled Marcell Dareus fails conditioning tests [1:50 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: '"He's just a young guy, but at the same time we hold him accountable just like everybody else," star defensive end Mario Williams said.'

Marker Jon Bon Jovi in the running to buy the Bills [1:49 AM]
New York Post reports: 'Despite Bon Jovi’s Toronto-laden ownership group, the constant speculation around the league about the Bills moving there or to Los Angeles appears to be overblown and more than a bit misguided.'

Marker Spartanburg High product Cohen signs with Buffalo Bills [1:48 AM]
Charleston Post and Courier reports: '“We got it all figured out Saturday night, just a phone call,” Cohen said in a phone interview Monday night. “I'm familiar with some of the guys here, some of the coaches and a little bit of the scheme. I decided that this was the best fit for me.”'

Marker It’s in our interest for the Bills to stay in Buffalo [1:47 AM]
Montreal Gazette reports: 'If the Toronto group succeeds in acquiring the Bills and moving them to Toronto, it might be good for Toronto — but it would be bad for the CFL, CFL cities and Canada. The broad public interest in this country is to see the Toronto bid fail.'

Marker Welcome to Camp Hope [1:46 AM]
SI reports: 'Get the idea? The honeymoon idea? These people aren’t hungry. They’re famished. The Bills haven’t made the playoffs in this century. They’ve had nine straight losing seasons. Imagine not winning 10 games in the past 14 years. Fourteen!'

Marker The Sammy Show [1:45 AM]
SI reports: 'He showed why Whaley surrendered first- and fourth-round picks in the 2015 draft to move up five spots in the first round last May so the Bills could pick him. Smart? We’ll see. The price was beyond exhorbitant, particularly for a team that still plans to key its offense around the running game. Watkins’ talent is tantalizing. And for a team languishing in sub-mediocrity for the past 14 seasons, his arrival’s been like a B-12 shot: energizing.'

Marker Watkins Wows, But in the End It’s Up to E.J. [1:44 AM]
SI reports: 'How this team can be 12–4: Two big things have to happen. Very big. E.J. Manuel has to be more of a chance-taker with two good outside receivers, Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods...Second thing: Marcell Dareus, on the non-football injury list early in camp for failing the conditioning test, has to grow up.'

Marker Sammy Watkins already looks like 'The Guy' at Bills training camp [1:43 AM]
Fox Sports reports: 'It's stories like those, and performances like the one Watkins had on Monday, that have this entire franchise giddy. In the midst of a 14-year postseason drought, five years removed from their last season in which they had more than six victories and a month after losing playmaking linebacker Kiko Alonso to a torn ACL, the Bills have plenty of hope. And Watkins is a major reason why.'

Marker Bills DT Dareus to enter substance abuse program [1:42 AM]
AP reports: 'Marrone provided the update after practice Monday, in the latest twist in Dareus' troubled offseason. Dareus was scheduled to return to camp in suburban Rochester later in the day.'
