Same old Bills emerge as season fades to black [12:47 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The final score was 26-24, but that doesn’t give anything remotely close to a true indication of how much the Bills were outplayed.'
Dreams of postseason take a real beating [12:46 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'There was no letdown. The Bills were simply outplayed by an Oakland team with an interim head coach and very little to play for. The worst thing is, they were physically beaten at the point of attack for much of the day.'
Dinged defense has letdown, while Mack looms large for Oakland [12:45 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“It’s different,” Bills cornerback Corey Graham said. “Obviously, when you lose two of your better players it’s going to be tough for the defense.'
10 Plays [12:44 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills marched to the Raider 33 in the first quarter. But Woodson, a 17-year veteran, made up for his early mistake on Watkins’ TD by intercepting an Orton pass for Chandler up the right seam. Bad decision by Orton.'
Quarterly Report [12:43 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Oakland rookie Khalil Mack, the University at Buffalo product, is legit. Mack made three tackles in the first quarter, including one on the Bills’ first play from scrimmage, when he dropped running back Fred Jackson for no gain.'
Report Card [12:43 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills’ season was in the balance. A loss would extinguish their postseason hopes. So they were outplayed by a hapless Raiders franchise that seemed more inspired despite playing only for pride. Schwartz’s head-coach stock is slipping. Nathaniel Hackett might be on the verge of calling his last game next week. So might Marrone.'
The beat goes on for Patriots [12:42 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Rob Gronkowski is a Comeback Player of the Year candidate. The Amherst native played just seven games in 2013 because of injuries, but has been a force this season. Gronkowski has 82 catches for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s started 10 games and appeared in 15. He was eased into action at the beginning of the year as he got back into shape after those injuries, which included a torn knee ligament. Gronk’s presence gives the Patriots the ability to run or pass.'
Up in smoke [12:36 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Fans who have stuck with them through about a decade and a half of thick, and four decades of thin, deserve a day to turn their backs on a team that defines the very essence of heartbreak, of disappointment, and of sheer incompetence.'
Three ... and Out [12:36 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'The former UB stud — picked No. 5 overall by Oakland, one slot after Buffalo took Sammy Watkins in May — was all over the place. He was credited with five tackles, one sack for 10 yards and two other quarterback hits, and was a constant source of disruption to the Bills.'
Report card [12:35 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Doug Marrone perhaps saved his job last week with that win against Green Bay. And then his team responded with this performance. As sickening losses go, this leaps right into Pittsburgh 2004 territory. Just an inexplicable, demoralizing, epic Bills-like failure on all fronts. Merry Christmas to all.'
Buffalo Bills Week 16 Report Card [12:32 AM]
Auburn Citizen reports: 'As for the rest of the coaching staff, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is one of the major reasons why this unit is one of the league's worst. Marrone should return in 2015, but Hackett shouldn't. There should be a new offensive coordinator next season.'
Team chokes in must-win game [12:31 AM]
Canandaigua Daily Messenger reports: 'The biggest issue for me was Doug Marrone punting on fourth-and-one from the Buffalo 46 in the fourth quarter. The Raiders then went on a touchdown drive that chewed up 5:22 and gave them a 26-17 lead. Buffalo lucked into a comeback after Oakland missed the field goal. I don’t know if Buffalo got caught looking past the Raiders, but it sure seemed like it. Another year with no playoffs, and this one will be tough for fans to swallow.'
Buffalo can't stop Derek Carr, lowly Oakland in 26-24 loss [12:26 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'Instead of having a playoff berth possibly on the line next week in New England, the Bills can start looking ahead to next season and figuring out what to do at quarterback. Orton failed to get Buffalo over the hump after replacing ineffective second-year player EJ Manuel.'
Buffalo Bills' playoff hopes die in Oakland, and 5 observations from Week 16 loss to Raiders [12:25 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: 'The Bills' run defense got off to a great start to the season but has fallen off a cliff in the last couple of months. On Sunday, the Bills allowed 142 yards on the ground to the Raiders, who don't have much of a passing game.'
Bills coach Doug Marrone on Michigan football coaching job: 'You're stuck with me' [12:24 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"You're stuck with me," Marrone said. "Fortunately or unfortunately."'
What Buffalo Bills players are saying about blowing chance at playoffs against Oakland Raiders [12:24 AM]
Syracuse Post-Standard reports: '"It just breaks your heart, you know? You sit there and put it all into it for a long time and you really don't do it for anybody but yourselves and for the guys next to you in the locker room. We still have one game to go and we'll play as hard as we can and try to get a win. Certainly when you've gone this long and you're right there and you have a chance and you put it all on the line and you don't come through, it stings. It hurts."'
Bills miss playoffs yet again, wasting a helluva great defence [12:19 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: 'The brutal Bills offensive line is to blame, yet only to a degree. Same with the overly protective, overly conservative scheme and play calls of head coach Doug Marrone and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.'
Bills playoff hopes end with 26-24 loss to Raiders [12:16 AM]
AP reports: '"Dreams get crushed. Nightmare," running back C.J. Spiller said.'
Dareus out for Bills with knee injury [12:15 AM]
AP reports: 'Dareus was helped off the field after getting hurt early in the second quarter on Sunday. He was originally listed as questionable to return, but the Bills announced later he was out for the game.'
Oakland 26, Buffalo 24 [12:10 AM]
The Sports Network reports: '"It breaks your heart. When you've gone this long and you don't come through, it hurts," said Orton. "It was all there, we just didn't have execution. And in the end it cost us. I'm disappointed in myself."'
Bills eliminated after stumbling in Oakland [12:08 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: '"Still got one game to go. We'll play as hard as we can and try to get a win. But, certainly, when you've gone this long and you're right there with a chance and you put it all on the line and you don't come through, it hurts."'
Raiders-Bills: What we learned [12:07 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Their offense needs a serious offseason upgrade, especially up front. The Bills rushed for 13 yards on 13 carries against the Raiders. "We're all grown men. We work very hard, we dedicate ourselves to this game," Bills tight end Lee Smith said. "You get your ass whipped up front for four quarters, it's embarrassing. We take it personal, and there's no excuse for it."'
Bills CB Gilmore suffers possible concussion [12:06 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'After being examined by Buffalo's medical staff, Gilmore left the game and was, according to the Bills, being evaluated for a concussion. At the end of the third quarter, the Bills announced that Gilmore would not return.'
Bills DT Dareus leaves with knee injury [12:05 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Dareus walked off the field under his own power after being examined by the Bills' medical staff. He walked to the locker room with 12:52 remaining in the first half. He returned to the sidelines to test his knee but returned to the locker room before halftime.'
Raiders Upset Bills 26-24 [11:54 PM]
Bills Daily reports: 'Just when you think there was a culture change and the Bills were turning the corner the nightmare of the past 15 years reared its ugly head once again. Everything fell into place for the Bills today in the playoff race except they forgot to show up against a lousy two win team and got beat by the Raiders. There isn't much left to say except boy is it painful being a Bills fan. 15 years and counting since the Bills last postseason berth the curse continues and shows no signs of coming to an end.'
All Units Contribute To Very Disappointing Loss [11:53 PM]
Bills Daily reports: 'Doug Marrone made a questionable call punting on 4th and 1 midway through the fourth quarter at their own 46. The Raiders took the next 5:22 off the clock and when the Bills got the ball back they were down by 9 with 2:51 to go.'
Raiders End Bills Playoff Hopes [11:52 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'The third quarter belonged to the Raiders, as they controlled the clock and kicked two field goals to make it 19-10. Buffalo's offense finally came to lfie towards the end of the quarter, and they started the 4th quarter with a touchdown pass to Scott Chandler to cut the lead to 19-17.'
Bills=UGH!!! [11:51 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'During his post game press conference, Marrone was asked about a report that mentioned him as a candidate for the job at the University of Michigan. Marrone said he had nothing to do with that job and that "you're stuck with me." Perfect choice of words to describe how most Bills fans would feel about his return next season but it appears the Bills will go for continuity over quality. Lets hope they don't make the same mistake with the starting quarterback.'
Bills playoff hopes end in loss to Oakland [11:48 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: 'In a must win game situation to keep their playoff hopes alive Buffalo jumped out to an early lead, but saw it disappear as their offense could not string enough yard-producing plays together. Oakland had balanced scoring with 13 points in each half and it was just enough to post a 26-24 victory. With the loss Buffalo was officially eliminated from the AFC playoff race ending their hopes of securing an AFC postseason bid for the first time in 15 seasons.'
RB C.J. Spiller back for Bills against Raiders [4:42 PM]
AP reports: 'With Spiller back, running back Bryce Brown is inactive Sunday for the Bills. The other inactive players for Buffalo are cornerback Ross Cockrell, linebackers LB Larry Dean and Randell Johnson, offensive lineman Cyrus Kouandjio, receiver Deonte Thompson and tight end Chris Gragg.'
