Marker Is this the best defense Buffalo's ever had? [5:00 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'For sheer dominance, that group in 1964 and 1965 that won back-to-back AFL championships was pretty tough to beat. The '64 team allowed an average of just 65 rushing yards per game, which is third best in pro football history for a non-strike season. The '65 team gave up only 16 points per game and had a team-record 57 takeaways.'

Marker For Bills, coach seats are first class [4:59 AM]
Tonawanda News reports: 'Mularkey's biggest worry may be keeping this staff together. Clements was a finalist for the head coaching job at Notre Dame, and is now among the candidates for the top job at the University of Pittsburgh. Gray's name could also surface as a candidate for future coaching vacancies. "I'd love to see Tom and Jerry Gray get a chance, but I am a little spoiled to have the guys I have," Mularkey said. "It makes everybody's jobs easier."'

Marker McGahee for Henry switch overshadows Switch #2 [4:58 AM]
WGRZ-TV reports: 'GM Tom Donahoe deserves credit for many moves over the past couple seasons, but the drafting of McGee may turn out to be the best value pick he ever makes.'

Marker When It Comes To The Bills-D, There's No [4:57 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'The unsung hero on this team is defensive coordinator Jerry Gray. He has quietly gone about his business and produced another of the league’s best defenses. He has shed Gregg Williams and Dick Lebeau, who were given much of the credit during Gray’s tenure. But, now this defense is his. They are producing turnovers, and getting pressure on the quarterback. He is a solid NFL coordinator, and don’t be surprised if a team looking for a new head coach takes a look at Gray during this off-season.'

Marker Vincent's move to safety 'average' by his standard [4:56 AM]
Nashville Tennessean reports: 'Bills defensive coordinator Jerry Gray, a former Titans assistant, made aggressive calls that rattled the Browns, including blitzes more than half the time. ''Every time Jerry was sending the pressure, it was getting there,'' Vincent said. ''He realized that there was no need to turn the faucet off.'''

Marker Inside slant [4:55 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'He lobbied Gray to blitz him; the Bills normally don't send the free safety, preferring to use strong safety Lawyer Milloy for that role. "I talked to Jerry about that," Vincent said. "If I'm going to free safety, at least get me the ball. And this week, he put a couple calls in the package and from the opening gate, my number was called. When that opportunity presents itself, I've got to make that play. It was there. And the guys were so productive up front, I think that set the tone."'

Marker Strategy and personnel [4:54 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'Kudos to rookie Mike Mularkey, who continues to push the right buttons against inferior competition to keep his team believing the playoffs are possible after starting 0-4.'

Marker Notes, quotes [4:53 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'The Bills would've been happy for offensive coordinator Tom Clements had he gotten the Notre Dame head coaching job. But now that the job went to Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis instead, the Bills aren't hiding their glee.'

Marker Bring the bleu, leave the bones [9:43 PM]
ESPN reports: Enjoy a high-flying, high-scoring squad. Watch Willis McGahee run. Root for Drew Bledsoe as the Jim Plunkett of the 21st Century. Admire the big hair of the chick next to you in her Andre Reed gamer. Have a wing.

Marker More Rest For Williams [9:41 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'WGR Sports Radio 550 has learned from a few sources that rookie TE Tim Euhus will have season ending knee surgery later this week.'

Marker Game Notes: Bills vs. Browns [9:39 PM] reports: 'Lee Evans: Posted his 6th touchdown reception of the year which is the most by a Bills rookie since Elbert Dubenion had seven in 1960.'

Marker Bills owner sees playoff grass greener on NFC side of standings [9:34 PM]
AP reports: 'It would be a different story if the Bills were in the NFC, where they'd be in the thick of the race in a conference that has only five teams with winning records.'

Marker Ask Him Yourself: Mike Mularkey [5:24 PM] reports: 'You started Troy Vincent at free safety against the Cleveland Browns and he was very effective. Do you plan to start him at safety the rest of the season? Or does it depend on who you are playing that particular week? MM: We'll re-evaluate the decision to play Troy Vincent at safety and see if it's the best fit. Speaking Monday, after his first game at that position, I will say that he will play free safety for our next game.'

Marker Ask Him Yourself: Tom Donahoe [5:24 PM] reports: 'You mentioned last week that Drew graded above 90 percent in 10 of the first 12 games. Could you give us a little more insight into how those grades are calculated? TD: Our players are graded each week by their position coach. The coach will evaluate each play based on the call and the assignment. In the case of Drew and the other quarterbacks they are graded by Sam Wyche and Sam is a very tough grader. The vast majority of times Drew's performances this year have been good enough for us to win the game and there is no question that Drew and all of our quarterbacks have benefited by the addition of Sam Wyche to our staff.'

Marker Browns hit rock bottom in Buffalo [3:57 PM]
The Sports Network reports: 'McCown was battered all game long by the Buffalo defense, as the Browns' offensive line surrendered eight sacks for a loss of 79 yards while allowing him to get hit numerous other times. The line just couldn't keep the Browns' defenders out of the youngster's face.'

Marker Bills’ defense smart, physical — and humble [3:48 PM]
Tonawanda News reports: '“We’ve won four in a row, that’s the important number,” Buffalo cornerback Lawyer Milloy said. “You’re judged by wins and losses, and right now we’re winning.”'

Marker The numbers don't lie — The Browns are awful [3:47 PM]
Tonawanda News reports: 'It’s about a three-hour bus ride to Cleveland, and it looked like the Browns were running for that bus by the end of the third quarter. McCown was not ready to be in thrown to the wolves against Buffalo’s aggressive defense. Butch Davis knew this was a mess when he quit two weeks ago, sticking interim coach Terry Robiskie with the task of dealing with the stench. Browns are awful.'

Marker Bills Offense Playing with Confidence [1:46 PM] reports: '"You have a little swagger when you score like that and you have a defense playing behind you," said tackle Jonas Jennings. "A little cockiness brings confidence.'

Marker Bills crush Cleveland [12:35 PM]
Niagara Gazette reports: '“We’re still mathematically alive and anything can happen,” the Bills’ owner said. “It takes me back to last year. The Vikings started at 6-0 and they missed the playoffs on a last second pass by Arizona in the final game. It was not against the Vikings, but somebody else. So, how do you know? How do you know in this game? There’s no form.”'

Marker Browns roll over like dogs, get pounded by Buffalo [12:28 PM]
Niagara Falls Reporter reports: 'The Bills weren't stylish or sleek on Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Thanks to their overwhelming physical dominance of team that looked like it would rather be anywhere else for nearly three quarters, they didn't need to be.'

Marker Buffalo’s defense crushes Cleveland [11:54 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: '“The difference is the offense is scoring points,” Vincent emphasized. “When you do that and your defense gets off the field (after) third down you have a chance to win.”'

Marker Browns’ Robiskie: ‘It was men against boys’ [11:53 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'How bad was it for McCown? His 25.4 QB rating was lower than Bills’ punter Brian Moorman (39.6), who threw an incompletion at the end of the first half on a muffed snap for a field goal try.'

Marker Vincent’s return fuels a record-setting day for ‘D’ [11:52 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: '“You’ve got a young quarterback that’s in there and you have to disrupt him a little bit,” he said. “When you’re that young and don’t have the experience knowing where guys are and you’re on the run, it’s not as easy as if you’re a guy who’s been getting a lot of snaps back there. We wanted to be in front of his face as much as we could and it was effective."'

Marker Tailspin reaches seven in Buffalo [11:49 AM]
Warren Tribune Chronicle reports: '"We had a lot of young guys out there (on the line)," Robiskie said. "With them, they have Sam Adams in the game, London Fletcher in the game, Takeo Spikes and Jeff Posey with their group. I got a sense on our sideline that it was too big for us. We were trying running plays, and we couldn't block them, and on passing plays we couldn't block them."'

Marker Bills ride defense to fourth straight win [11:48 AM]
Warren Tribune Chronicle reports: 'The on-site parking lots opened at 8 a.m., and were filled with several hundred tailgaters within minutes. . . . The most unusual item on sale at the concession stands was a "venison dog," which cost 50 cents more than a "kielbasa dog."'

Marker Bills keep rolling [9:24 AM]
Wellsville Daily Reporter reports: '"When you've got two guys that are two feet from each other that the combined weight is almost 800,000 pounds then you're not going to have a lot of time," said McCown of Adams and Pat Williams. "Those guys, a lot of times you can't just block those guys with one lineman. It takes two or three guys to block those two guys and that frees up a linebacker to come on a blitz and then we can't pick him up. They had a great scheme for us."'

Marker That's a wrap! [8:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's about points and attitude," Bills veteran Troy Vincent said of the winning streak. "When you score points, you start believing in yourself, believing in what the coaches are preaching, and you give yourself a great chance to win."'

Marker Browns bothered by big beating [8:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"You usually don't see that a whole lot," Browns tackle Ross Verba said of the Bills' defensive display. "They pretty much just do whatever they want."'

Marker Vincent passes on-the-job training with flying colors [8:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"For his first game back and for as long as he's been out, to play free safety out of the blue and make the plays that he did was outstanding on his part," said Bills coach Mike Mularkey. "Not just his play, but him on the field is a big factor for our defense."'

Marker 'D' solidifies standing as foundation of franchise [8:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It was a point of emphasis this week," said Milloy, "not to fall into that trap, not to get involved in what people were saying about the playoffs. We were 6-6. We're far away from the playoffs. We all did a good job of keeping ourselves humble and preparing for a team we viewed as a threat. We told ourselves, "Don't let them get started. Let's keep them down. Let them play for next year and let's keep our year alive.' "'
