Buffalo Bills News - July 30, 2003

Marker Filling In The Blanks [1:10 PM]
Morgan Messenger reports: 'Miami (12-4), Jets (10-6), Buffalo (9-7), New England (8-8).'

Marker Bills Alumni Spotlight: Dave Foley [1:07 PM] reports: '"The greatest thing that I can say about being on the Bills during the time that I was there was when O.J. ran for all the yards. The notoriety that the whole offensive line got as a group. That being, we went to banquets as a group and so forth. And our picture is in the Hall of Fame as a group. There are some neat things about that just because O.J. was the first running back in football to really bring his offensive linemen along with him. The deal is - everybody got something out of the experience."'

Marker The Don of NFL broadcasters to get his due [8:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Criqui, who along with Enberg is the co-host of the Hall of Fame Festival Parade on Saturday, is pleased that he is being honored the same weekend that two former Bills, James Lofton and Joe DeLamielleure, are entering the Hall of Fame. "I am a blown away Bills fan," he admits. "If I have one regret about the Hall of Fame, it's that (Bills owner) Ralph Wilson isn't in it."'

Marker Ballhawk Thomas learning to fly [8:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Thomas was overwhelmed and confused for weeks, if not months, and for most of last season it showed.'

Marker Gash a lineman at heart [5:19 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“ People ask me if I would like to get the ball more, and I say, ‘ No way,’” says Gash, who has a total of four carries the past four seasons and only 120 during his 11-year NFL career. “ Those running backs have targets on their backs. They got 11 guys after them. I’d much rather be the guy doing the punishing. I love knocking a linebacker off his feet and watching a back like Travis Henry run down the field for a big gain.”'

Marker Bills' Maytag repairman [5:18 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“ He can play center or guard and that makes him a valuable commodity in the NFL,” offensive-line coach Pat Ruel said. “ Trey Teague (the starting center) will be a better center because he has Mike behind him.”'

Marker Bills aren't in a rush to ink draftee McGahee [5:17 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Another possible stumbling block in talks is Buffalo’s plans for McGahee once he does sign. Donahoe is giving out signals he may place McGahee on the non-football injury list, meaning the Bills would not be liable for his base salary until he’s ready to play. Apparently the non-football designation can be used since McGahee was hurt while still in college.'

Marker Takeo Spikes is seen as key to improvement [5:16 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: '"I know a lot of people expect a lot of great things out of me," he said. "I expect a lot of great things out of myself. That's why I feel there's no pressure."'

Marker Spikes is a ready, able Buffalo soldier [5:15 AM]
USA Today reports: '"I could have gone anywhere and visited a lot of teams," he says. "This is where I wanted to be. I felt this was the best shot for me."'

Marker Bills try once-is-enough approach [5:14 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'The drive from Albany to the Rochester suburb got me thinking: How do the folks in this portion of New York and the New York City area vote on things that affect each other? Granted they are considered the same state, but anyone who has ever driven in upstate New York knows that the area has about as much in common with the Big Apple, Long Island and Westchester as Alabama does. We don't have places that boast, "Mo's Truck Motel $15.99 per night" in New York City. They don't have subways packed with people who talk to themselves.'

Marker Rolling the dice [5:13 AM]
CNN/SI reports: 'Either way, I admire the confidence Williams has in himself and his team. He believes the Bills are going to be winners this season, and he believes his big payday will result. And he doesn't seem bothered in the least this season by his lack of job security.'

Marker Bills nab former Jaguar Battles [5:12 AM]
The Sports Network reports: 'Battles was released by the Jaguars on June 30, along with four other players.'

Marker Buffalo Bills & Cleveland Browns Scrimmage [5:11 AM] reports: 'This year marks the third straight year that the Bills and Browns are meeting for preseason workouts.'

Marker Tuesday's Bills Training Camp Report [5:10 AM]
Bills Report reports: 'Things went fairly smooth in Rochester today as the team only held an afternoon practice open to the public. The most notable play of the day was cornerback Marcus Floyd’s bone-crushing hit on speedy wideout James Jett. Both of these players are fighting for a spot on the team at their respective positions and the hit was mostly a result of both trying thier hardest to make a play.'

Marker Pictures of Tuesday Afternoon Practice [10:39 PM]
The Stadium Wall reports: Some very nice shots taken by a Stadium Wall veteran.

Marker New Bill In Town [8:36 PM] reports: '"We had a lot of options on the table, took visits to a couple different teams," Battle said following his first practice with the Bills. "Just on paper and the free agent acquisitions, Buffalo seemed like a very good fit for me."'

Marker Bills Add Ainsley Battles [4:33 PM] reports: 'Battles will wear jersey #30 and is expected at this afternoon’s practice.'

Marker Bills sign S Battles [4:28 PM]
AP reports: 'Battles is a three-year veteran who spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Pittsburgh in 2000.'

Marker Reed not passing up chance to replace Price [3:21 PM]
AP reports: '''It's like a dream come true,'' Reed said, following a recent training camp practice. ''Having a guy like that (Moulds) root you on, and having your coaches having the belief in you that you can do it, and getting a year under my belt, it's just a lot of confidence.'''

Marker Bills Camp, Fun for All Ages [11:28 AM] reports: Interactive is the perfect word to describe Bills training camp. After the fans walk through the camp pro shop they come to the interactive area adjacent to the practice field. There are games and obstacles from field goal kicks, and catching passes, to quarterback throws to entertain the kids.

Marker Bills hope Campbell is good fit [8:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"He can be as good as he wants to be in our system," Bills coach Gregg Williams said. "We're going to give our tight end a lot of flexibility on running vertical routes, but we want to be able to knock defensive ends off the ball in the running game."'

Marker Agent sees progress from McGahee [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"Drew is an excellent negotiator, but he didn't go to medical school," Bills President and General Manager Tom Donahoe said after practice Monday. "We will go with what our doctors say. Our No. 1 priority in this whole situation is Willis' health and his future."'

Marker Feeding the frenzy [5:38 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: Just two years removed from the misery of a 3-13 season, Bills fans are excited about their team. They figure there will be a better balance between the run and pass on offense, and the defense was greatly bolstered with the off-season acquisitions of linebacker Takeo Spikes and defensive tackle Sam Adams. Dan Metzger, Chris Schultz and Pat Smyton — all students at Rochester Institute of Technology who are from Tonawanda — wedged their way into an open space along the fence so they could watch last night’s practice.

Marker Marcus Jones is game for anything [5:37 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'The Bills had just 31 sacks and a National Football League-low 19 turnovers last season. If they are going to become a playoff team this fall, they will need to turn up the heat on the quarterback, and that’s where Jones could factor in. He will turn 30 on Aug. 15, and if he can regain his health, he’ll be penciled in at the left defensive end spot vacated by Chidi Ahanotu.'

Marker Bills ease camp but not expectations [5:36 AM]
USA Today reports: '"The motto of this camp," Williams says, "is because you gave us a commitment in the offseason, we'll practice with great tempo and great enthusiasm, but we've backed off on two-a-days and we've backed off on some of the contact."'

Marker Bills Work At Night [5:35 AM] reports: 'Working after 6:00 PM with cooler temperatures and a large crowd is something some of these players have never experienced before. "It gets the blood flowing and gets you thining about Sunday's," said new linebacker Takeo Spikes.'

Marker Stand Up Coach [5:34 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'The decision he made on his contract is the kind of big time decision that makes the difference between greatness and mediocrity. If it works, he will have taken a great risk and will receive a major personal and financial reward.'

July 28, 2003

Marker Veteran Eric Moulds Tutors Younger Josh Reed [9:50 PM] reports: '"We have to prove that we can win with the run. Look at Tampa Bay, they had a potent passing attack. They have some guys who can run the football and their efficient when they pass the ball and that's the way we have to be. We're going to take our shots up the field make some plays in the passing game, but we want to run the football and get better and I think that if we run the ball well it creates play action passing and that's one of Drew's strengths."'

Marker McGahee ready to practice? Not yet, say Bills [9:27 PM]
AP reports: 'Bills president Tom Donahoe disagreed. Saying that Rosenhaus is attempting to improve his position in contract talks, Donahoe added that the agent should ``leave the medical opinions to the medical people.'''

Marker Bills LB Denman not sure whether he'll report to camp [4:29 PM]
AP reports: '''He's got some personal issues that he's trying to work through right now,'' Denman's agent, Joel Segal, said Monday. ''He's wading through the problems trying to figure out what he's going to do.'''
