Buffalo Bills News - October 9, 2003

Marker Pennington might be back earlier than expected [11:39 AM]
White Plains Journal News reports: '"These rumors as soon as he started throwing ... better than what my wife asked me yesterday,'' Edwards said. "She just figured he was playing. She had a great point. 'Only given up two sacks all year, why can't he play?' Honey, lay down, you're tired. But you know, that's my wife. She asks a crazy question like that when you come home at 1 in the morning. That's all right. It's a bye week, you'll be OK in the morning.'''

Marker How much do the Jets really want it? [11:38 AM]
Asbury Park Press/Home News Tribune reports: 'That 1992 Chargers team is the only NFL team to lose its first four games and come back to make the playoffs. I was in the locker room at Giants Stadium two Sundays ago after Bill Parcells and the Dallas Cowboys dropped the Jets to 0-4, and I didn't see a tear shed. Nor did I sense any outrage at the fact that the season was slipping into oblivion. And that's the biggest indictment of the 2003 Jets.'

Marker Moulds doubtful because of groin strain [11:37 AM]
AP reports: 'Without Moulds, the Bills would have to elevate two untested rookies: undrafted free agent Clarence Coleman, fourth-round pick Sam Aiken. Coleman doesn't have a catch this season, Aiken has been inactive.'

Marker Urgency in McGahee's step as he approaches first practice [11:36 AM]
AP reports: '''I think you all are getting more excited than me,'' McGahee said, laughing, to a group of reporters. ''Yeah, I'm getting excited. I'm looking forward to see how things are going to turn out.'''

Marker NFL pushes back start time for Redskins-Bills game [11:35 AM]
AP reports: 'The move was made to accommodate television schedules.'

Marker Pennington upgraded to doubtful but will not play [11:34 AM]
AP reports: '''I don't know if he's ahead, but for him to go out and throw and for all of mankind to put it on TV like we found our lost son, I have to say something,'' Edwards said. ''His status is doubtful. It's not like I can hide it any longer. He's been throwing for three days.'''

Marker Bradway taking heat for Jets slow start [11:33 AM]
AP reports: 'Bradway seems the perfect target after an offseason in which the Redskins plucked four players including top receiver Laveranues Coles from the team. Bradway also traded two No. 1 picks to move up and take defensive tackle Dwayne Robertson, who has not had an immediate impact.'

Marker Buffalo (3-2) at NY Jets (0-4) [11:32 AM]
AP reports: '``The bottom line is the running game isn't getting it done right now,'' said Martin, who has run for just 197 yards and no touchdowns in four games.'

Marker Moulds doubtful for Sunday's game versus Jets [11:31 AM]
The Sports Network reports: 'Moulds suffered the injury during this past Sunday's overtime win against Cincinnati. On the game-winning drive, he caught a 28-yard pass and landed awkwardly after being tackled by Bengals safety Kevin Kaesviharn.'

Marker Bills RB McGahee passes physical [11:30 AM]
The Sports Network reports: 'If the elusive back is cleared to play, McGahee can begin to participate in practice at any point during a three-week period starting the day after week 6. The Bills will then have the option of activating McGahee within 21 days from that date, or he will become ineligible for the remainder of the season.'

Marker Bills Coach Gregg Williams Previews NY Jets [11:29 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '"Every time there is an injury there's an opportunity for somebody else to step up. There are some other good football players on that team, on this team, on our offense. We'll have to adapt and change. The teams that adapt the best are the ones that continue to improve and are the most successful in the league. Injuries are a part of this game. We'll just have to adapt and go on. Don't count him out."'

Marker Quarterback Drew Bledsoe Previews NY Jets [11:28 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '"We lean on Eric fairly heavily with our offense. He's one of the best players in the league and generally when we take the field we feel like he's the best guy out there. If Eric is not able to go that does hurt us offensively but we have to have guys step up. That's the name of the game in this league. No team goes through this season with all their guys healthy the entire season and when guys get hurt guys have to step in and make plays. It's a great opportunity for some guys that don't normally play as big a role to step in and take a larger role and the guys that capitalize on those opportunities are the guys that end up playing a long time in the league. They have to fill those shoes."'

Marker Buffalo May Miss Moulds [11:27 AM]
NewYorkJets.com reports: '“We feel every time we take the field with Eric, he is going to be the best player on the field,” Drew Bledsoe said. “We feel that he is a tremendous athlete, one of the best athletes I have ever seen. He does a great job running his routes. He has improved on that even in the time I have been here. And with that, he is very explosive after the catch. Eric is a great asset to our offense.”'

Marker Moulds Doubtful for Sunday [11:26 AM]
RNews.com reports: '"We're going to have to kick, and scrap, and fight and do whatever it takes, because we got other guys who are going to have to step it up including myself," Shaw explained.'

Marker Field goal folly? [11:25 AM]
WGRZ-TV reports: 'But pleeeeeze. Ask his players how many of them think he should have lined up to kick the field goal on 2nd and goal at the 2. Rian Lindell’s hand would be the only one to go up, and I’m not so sure about that.'

Marker A Win Is A Win [11:24 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'Certainly there are unanswered questions; Will Josh Reed get out of his funk? Has the offense returned to their early season form after a decent second half? Is the defense still capable of becoming championship caliber? Can the Bills figure out a way to start games like they did the first two weeks, and not need ra-ra halftime speeches in the locker-room to get them going? Can Gregg Williams get through a game without making a questionable decision, like this week's full rush on the punt, where Coy Wire took a costly penalty?'

Marker The Other Side: A Hurt Buffalo [7:02 PM]
NewYorkJets.com reports: 'What gives with the Buffalo Bills? They looked like world-beaters early, clobbering New England and Jacksonville by a combined score of 69-17. Since then, the Bills have appeared rather pedestrian in losses to Miami (17-7) and Philadelphia (23-13) and most recently, needed an overtime squeaker to beat Cincinnati at home.'

Marker Some stats and notes from Bills [7:01 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'However, the victory over Cincinnati produced two more upbeat stats for Bledsoe. First, it marked the 22nd time in his career that he had rallied a team to victory after it trailed in the fourth quarter. And, it was the 11th time he’s done it in the last two minute, three times as a Bill.'

Marker Pennington upgraded to doubtful but will not play [1:21 PM]
AP reports: '``I don't know if he's ahead, but for him to go out and throw and for all of mankind to put it on TV like we found our lost son, I have to say something,'' Edwards said. ``His status is doubtful. It's not like I can hide it any longer. He's been throwing for three days.'''

Marker Jets' Pennington upgraded to doubtful [1:19 PM]
The Sports Network reports: 'New York Jets starting quarterback Chad Pennington has been upgraded to doubtful, but he will not play in this Sunday's home game against Buffalo.'

Marker Moulds doubtful for Sunday's game versus Jets [1:18 PM]
The Sports Network reports: 'Moulds suffered the injury during this past Sunday's overtime win against Cincinnati. On the game-winning drive, he caught a 28-yard pass and landed awkwardly after being tackled by Bengals safety Kevin Kaesviharn.'

Marker Bills Moulds doubtful because of groin strain [1:17 PM]
AP reports: 'As for the possibility of playing without Moulds this weekend, Williams said, ''Injuries are part of this game. We'll have to adapt and go on. But don't count him out.'''

Marker Some stats and notes from Bills [1:16 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Lost in the tension of Sunday’s victory was the play of Buffalo defensive tackle Pat Williams, who had only 14 tackles the first four games. Against the Bengals, he was credited with eight stops as Buffalo held the Bengals to only 67 rushing yards on 27 carries and nine of those attempts were for no gain or a loss.'

Marker Game 6 Preview: Changes Changes Changes [11:01 AM]
NewYorkJets.com reports: 'The Jets defense is currently ranked first in the NFL in sacks per pass play and are 3rd in passing yards allowed per game. They have restricted their opponents to an average of just 165.3 yards per game by air.'

Marker Bills-Redskins Kickoff Time Moved [10:57 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: 'The change was made to accommodate FOX television patterns.'

Marker Redskins-Bills Kickoff Moved to 4:15 p.m. EST [10:35 AM]
Redskins.com reports: 'The Oct. 19 game between the Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium has been moved to a 4:15 p.m. EST start time.'

Marker Jets confidential [10:25 AM]
Newark Star Ledger reports: 'Third-year Bills RB Travis Henry has had some big days against the Jets, who have won three of the past four games against Buffalo.'

Marker Sitting doesn't sit well with Sullivan [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"No," Sullivan said, "I'm not happy."'

Marker Tuesdays With Teddy [7:46 AM]
NewYorkJets.com reports: 'Travis has been hurt a little bit and Sammy Morris missed some time. I think that has hurt the Bills in their attempts to get the run game untracked. It’s going to hurt your productivity without your top two runners healthy. I watched tape of the Philly game and Travis didn’t play. The Bills passing game suffers when Travis is not in the game.'

Marker Bills Alumni Spotlight: Justin Armour [7:45 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: 'After spending nearly two years in Mexico, Armour now lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Cara, and their eight-month old son, Joah. He is not unfamiliar with the term ‘pursuing a dream.’ Armour accomplished one by playing in the NFL, albeit briefly, and hopes his venture into skating rolls on a lot longer.'
