Buffalo Bills News - April 15, 2017

Marker Sully's Mailbag: Has Pegula lost touch with fans? [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'It's a continuing puzzlement how an owner who spends lavishly on his teams and passes himself off as a real Joe Fan can be so dismissive of his customers. As Hirschbeck wrote, "a first-class organization treats its fans with affection and respect, no matter where the team is in the standings."'

Marker Buffalo Bills are doing due diligence on quarterbacks [1:56 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'So the need to pick someone like DeShaun Watson, Mitch Trubisky, DeShone Kizer or Patrick Mahomes with that 10th pick is no longer there. It has been widely reported that none of these guys looks like sure-fire future NFL starters, let alone stars worthy of being picked that high, though no one really knows. Maybe one of these kids is the next Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.'

Marker 2017 NFL Draft: Ranking Mitch Trubisky and top 10 quarterbacks for Buffalo Bills [1:55 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Who knows if the Bills will actually pick a quarterback with the No. 10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, but they're doing their homework. In the event the Bills take a chance on a quarterback, we took a close look at 10 of the top prospects at ranked them here.'

Marker Buffalo Bills land Cam Robinson and Chad Kelly in NFL.com's six round mock draft [1:54 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: '"Robinson could go higher than expected in this draft; Carolina, Cincinnati, and Buffalo all had him in for visits. The Alabama tackle's strength at the point of attack is tough to ignore."'

Marker NFL Draft 2017: Bills' needs at No. 10 and what it means for the Browns [1:53 AM]
Cleveland Plain Dealer reports: 'If they want to move forward with Taylor at quarterback, they will need to get him some weapons. Sammy Watkins is a talented wideout, but he missed 11 games in the last two seasons. So a more reliable receiver could help.'

Marker Former Wyoming standout Eddie Yarbrough looks to catch on with Buffalo Bills [1:52 AM]
Casper Star Tribune reports: '“I was working hard, training every day and really just wanted an opportunity,” said Yarbrough, who’s currently at around 250 pounds. “When the Bills called, I was definitely excited. ... The team is awesome. It’s a first-class organization and really, really great players and great locker room. I couldn’t ask for a better situation.”'

Marker Three potential draft day trade partners [1:51 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Scenario’s aside, here are three teams that could be contacting Doug Whaley and company to swap first round picks.'

Marker Bills Today: Jones confident after offseason improvement [1:50 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '“I spent a lot of time keeping my feet and hips in line with my target and being able to deliver when my feet aren’t always set or deliver in awkward positions or on the move with a rusher coming at you,” Jones said.'

Marker Vic Carucci: For McDermott's high-accountability approach to work, all of the Bills must be on [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'If things truly are different and if everyone is buying into his higher standards and accountability, then there shouldn't be any doubt about whether that's the case.'

Marker McCoy back at Bills' offseason workouts [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'An NFL source told The News that no one at One Bills Drive, including McDermott, seemed the least bit concerned about McCoy not being there on April 3. Nevertheless, having him show up this week undoubtedly will go a long way toward calming any angst that he might be unhappy with the team in some way.'

Marker Bills have Utah OT Bolles in for pre-draft visit [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills are hardly locked in with a starter at right tackle. Jordan Mills is the incumbent and the front-runner for the job at the moment. Cyrus Kouandjio is among other competitors.'

Marker Report: Bills' RFA Gillislee visits Patriots [1:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'If the Patriots offer Gillislee a contract and the Bills decided not to match the deal – as was the case last year with wide receiver Chris Hogan – the Pats would owe them a fifth-round draft pick.'

Marker 3 reasons the Bills should draft: Alabama TE O.J. Howard [1:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'His career numbers don't show tremendous production, but that's because the Crimson Tide offense doesn't make extensive use of the tight end as a receiver. Howard is an exceptionally gifted athlete with great speed, agility, body control, and acceleration after the catch. He does a superb job of tracking the ball in the air and using his reliable hands to snatch it away from his body. Howard has an extremely wide catch radius.'

Marker Pegulas, Whaley issue statements on passing of Steelers owner Dan Rooney [1:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"Dan Rooney is one of the true pioneers and pillars of the National Football League and deserves a lot of the credit for the success that our sport has enjoyed for a very long time. On top of that, he was as classy and nice of a man you will ever come across.'

Marker Buffalo Bills to host West Georgia CB Marcus Sayles on pre-draft visit [1:53 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'The cornerback put together quite the successful career at West Georgia. The team's website noted that Sayles started in 46-of-47 games in his four-year career. He recorded 12 interceptions in four seasons, including a career-high five interceptions this season, with 36 passes defensed. He also holds the team's record for kick blocks with 13.'

Marker 2017 NFL Draft: Get to know Nate Peterman and 7 sleepers connected to Buffalo Bills [1:52 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Nate Peterman isn't a sleeper in the traditional sense. The Pittsburgh quarterback is well known in draft circles and is considered by some the best of the second tier of quarterbacks. If the Bills pass on a quarterback with the No. 10 pick, Peterman could be in play on the second or third day of the draft. He has more experience playing under center than most in this class but lacks the physical tools and developmental upside of other prospects.'

Marker Buffalo Bills hosting Utah OT Garett Bolles on pre-draft visit (report) [1:51 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'Bolles, 24, spent two years away from football after high school. He transferred to Utah from Snow College. Despite only playing one season at Utah, Bolles' athleticism and footwork has him among the top tackles in this year's draft class.'

Marker Patriots hosted Buffalo Bills RFA Mike Gillislee on visit (report) [1:50 AM]
Syracuse Post Standard reports: 'New England signed Rex Burkhead in free agency, but continue to show interest in adding additional running backs. The Patriots have met with Adrian Peterson and are supposedly interested in re-signing LeGarrette Blount.'

Marker Mock watch 5.0: NFL Draft less than two weeks away [1:49 AM]
Batavia Daily News reports: 'The Buffalo Bills have added pieces in free agency, from recent signing of depth quarterback TJ Yates to addressing holes on the defense with signing such as defensive back Micah Hyde. Still, the Bills have more to fill and have at least six more players en route to Buffalo via the draft.'

Marker A look back at the best and the worst of Buffalo Bills drafts [1:48 AM]
Rochester Business Journal reports: 'Worst Pick: Aaron Maybin, first round, 2009. Sadly, there are so many flops from which to choose.'

Marker Source: Bills still deciding on Watkins' 5th year option [1:47 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'While exercising the option seems like a slam-dunk by most analysts and observers (and I still believe the Bills will ultimately do it), I’m told the reason the team has yet to decide is because the option is guaranteed against injury. Since the Clemson product entered the league in 2014 he’s had numerous ailments that have kept him off the field. He’s missed 11 games the past two seasons, including eight last year after breaking a bone in his foot and is currently recovering from a second surgery he had in January to repair that foot.'

Marker Examining the Bills' current salary cap situation [1:46 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'As it stands right now, the 51st salary on the roster is CB Kevon Seymour's $565,089. The next-lowest salary is $540K, which is the amount of a veteran minimum deal for a player with exactly one year experience. So, essentially, any player signed to more money than that right now will count for his normal cap hit minus $540K, since that $540K will then fall below the top-51 threshold. Once a new threshold is established the player will count his cap number less that new amount.'

Marker NFL Mock Draft No. 4 (4/13/17) [1:45 AM]
WKBW-TV reports: 'S Jamal Adams, LSU.'

Marker Bills Today: McDermott's message well-received in Bills locker room [1:44 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: '"The vision is to compete every day. That starts with me," McDermott said. "I get up every day trying to earn the right to win. I believe in that process, and in this business it's six inches the difference between winning and losing every week. I think the average margin of victory in the NFL last year was plus-or-minus-10 points. The margin for error is very small, and that means we have to out-work our opponents."'

Marker Bills host free-agent CB Shareece Wright [1:59 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Wright spent the past two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.'

Marker Former Bills VP of College Scouting Tom Modrak passes [1:58 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '“T-Mo was one of a kind," Bills managing partner and president Russ Brandon said in a statement released by the team. "I’m grateful for the relationship we shared during our time in Buffalo. He was a great competitor, had a wonderful sense of humor and had a great perspective on life in the NFL. I always appreciated his text messages reminding me that ‘life is all about making memories.’'

Marker Jerry Sullivan's Power Take: I thought it was a bad QB class [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'There's virtually no chance any of the top QBs will be there in the second round. They could trade up, but they have limited resources. There's a one-year out in Taylor's latest extension, so they could take a QB at 10 and let him sit behind Tyrod for a year.'

Marker Mark Gaughan: Honorable Tom Modrak was a gray man in Bills' drought [1:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'What kind of job did Modrak do for the Bills? That's where it gets gray. Not good enough, for sure. That's a fact for everybody involved with the football administration of the franchise the past 17 years. But it's hard to make too many definitive statements about Modrak's contributions to the Bills' because he never was the one in full control of the team's personnel.'

Marker 3 reasons the Bills should draft: Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer [1:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'He moves extremely well for his size. Kizer is nimble enough on his feet to slide and shuffle in the pocket to extend plays. He has great open-field quickness that allows him to run away from defenders and make big plays. But when moving behind the line, Kizer consistently maintains poise and constantly keeps his eyes downfield. He has had 18 rushing touchdowns in the last two seasons.'

Marker Former Buffalo Bills personnel executive Tom Modrak dies [1:54 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Modrak came to the Bills in 2001, shortly after that year’s NFL Draft. He rejoined Tom Donahoe, who was then in his first year as the Bills’ general manager, after the two had worked together for several years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. When Donahoe was fired following the 2005 season, Modrak was retained, and he went on to run the Bills’ drafts until his dismissal in 2011.'
