Buffalo Bills News - November 4, 2003

Marker Here Are The Bills [8:17 PM] reports: 'Offensively, the Bills began the season having little difficulty putting points on the board, averaging more than 34 points in their first two games. But since that time, Buffalo has averaged just 12.3 points per game. The Bills have tried to established a balanced attack with Henry and Bledsoe being the focal point of the offense and the receiving trio of Eric Moulds, Bobby Shaw and Josh Reed being Bledsoe's prime targets. If the Buffalo offensive line can protect Bledsoe, expect that trio to be a major factor on Sunday.'

Marker Insurance At Center [8:14 PM] reports: 'The Cowboys addressed a depth concern Tuesday, signing free-agent center Bill Conaty, who spent his first six NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills, the Cowboys' next opponent.'

Marker Bills TE Campbell signs multiyear extension [8:11 PM]
AP reports: '``Mark's very excited and he's looking forward to being there,'' Campbell's agent, Steve Forest, said. ``They approached us and it was obviously mutual because we feel it was a good deal. And it's always good to be somewhere that you're wanted.'''

Marker Bills sign TE Campbell to contract extension [8:10 PM]
Sportsticker reports: 'Acquired from Cleveland in February, Campbell has played in all eight games this season and ranks fourth on the team with 23 receptions for 197 yards.'

Marker Campbell Signs Contract Extension [4:39 PM] reports: 'The 27-year-old Campbell has played in all eight games for the Bills in 2003 with seven starts at tight end. He ranks fourth on the team with 23 receptions covering 197 yards.'

Marker Back To Business at One Bills Drive [1:56 PM] reports: 'Over the last 10 years, 26 teams have reached the postseason after starting the year 4-4 or worse.'

Marker Former Bills lineman pleads guilty to cocaine charge [1:18 PM]
AP reports: 'Crafts was arrested Aug. 29 for receiving two ounces of cocaine. He will remain in jail until a sentencing hearing on Jan. 6. Crafts, a first-time offender, is expected to receive probation, although he faces a maximum term of 15 years in prison.'

Marker McGahee: Hard Work Not Over Yet [12:08 PM] reports: Do you think you can play this Sunday against the Cowboys?

Marker Bills face tough road to playoffs [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I know we have to go 6-2 or 7-1 to make the playoffs," Bills defensive tackle Sam Adams said on Monday.'

Marker Bills must beef up pass rush [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Tom Donahoe, the Bills' president and general manager, was notorious at Pittsburgh for trading down so he wouldn't have to give huge bonuses to high draft picks. Do you think he wishes he'd traded down for Freeney instead of paying Mike Williams as the fourth overall pick in the 2002 draft?'

Marker Former Bills player Crafts pleads guilty in drug case [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Jerry Crafts, a former offensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Destroyers, was jailed without bail Monday on his guilty plea to a cocaine charge linked to a Las Vegas-Buffalo drug ring.'

Marker McKenzie wants to be back in the game [5:25 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Forcing turnovers starts with pressuring the quarterback into mistakes. Not surprisingly, Buffalo’s meager 13 sacks ranked 25th after eight games. In their four losses, the Bills managed just five sacks and three takeaways. They were shut out in both categories in their 38-5 loss at Kansas City last time out when the Chiefs scorched them for 275 yards passing.'

Marker Inside slant [5:02 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'However, Donahoe did not talk about what might happen after the season, and if Williams does not get the stagnant Bills turned around in the second half of the year, his three-year contract - which expires after 2003 - will almost certainly not be renewed.'

Marker Strategy and personnel [5:01 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'The Bills have been far too reliant on their passing game during the first half of the season, and opposing defenses are starting to figure this out and make life miserable for QB Drew Bledsoe.'

Marker Notes, quotes, anecdotes [5:00 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'LT Jonas Jennings, who left the Kansas City game with a hip injury, rested during the bye week and is expected to return to action Sunday against Dallas. If he should suffer a setback in practice, Marcus Price would start against the Cowboys.'

Marker DT Adams vows Bills will atone for sub-par first half [7:24 PM]
AP reports: '''When you lose your last game it don't ever leave you until you get back on the field and get that bad taste wiped out of your mouth,'' Adams said. ''The bye week was good for us.'''

Marker Rest helps WR Moulds regain full form [7:23 PM]
AP reports: '''I'm not sure of the percentage yet, but I went through the whole practice today and it felt pretty good,'' said Moulds. ''I made some plays, and once your confidence gets back to that level, you go out there and play the same way you normally play.'''

Marker Back To Businness at One Bills Drive [7:23 PM] reports: '"We're 4-4 and we've got eight more games to go," said Brown. "We could easily finish the season out with only four losses. That's a great possibility."'

Marker History holds a harsh light up to the play-calling of Kevin Gilbride [9:15 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Ryan and Gilbride never hit it off, which wasn't a surprise. There weren't many people on Ryan's buddy list, nor was Ryan on many others. "Buddy thinks he's right with everything he says and everything he does," said Wade Phillips, former head coach of the Bills, while he was still coach of the Broncos. "That's him."'

Marker Bills refuse to call it quits [5:15 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“I’ve been saying all along that this is a marathon,” Adams said. “I’ve seen teams go 8-2 and not make the playoffs. We’re in this thing for the long haul and right now we’re sitting in the middle of the pack. We’re getting ready to put our kick in like Seabiscuit.”'

Marker Xerox signs deal with Buffalo Bills [9:00 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The deal gives Xerox signage throughout Ralph Wilson Stadium, category exclusivity and advertising in Bills publications and hospitality on game days. Xerox will also be a sponsor of the Bills' 2004 training camp.'

Marker Sorry Bills fans ... Williams is still the coach [5:01 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Trouble is, in this season of great expectations, the Bills are one game worse that last year’s edition which, after a 5-3 start, struggled home 3-5 and missed the playoffs by a win.'

Marker Crunch Time [5:00 AM]
CNN/SI reports: 'While Wilson and general manager Tom Donahoe both have showed some support for the embattled Williams this week, nobody in Buffalo is unaware of how much is at stake in the coming eight weeks. Williams is a good coach and a good man, and his players continue to play hard for him, but it's clear that he has struggled with how to consistently and correctly push his team's buttons in his two and a half seasons on the job.'

Marker At midseason, Rams and Chiefs look Super [9:27 AM]
ESPN reports: The only thing the Bills have done to prove me right was trouncing the Patriots in the opener -- and I have long maintained that the first game of the season can be the most misleading. The Bills have plenty of talent, but anyone who watched them look thoroughly overmatched in Kansas City on Sunday night must concede that they're something missing in Buffalo. Coach Gregg Williams will need at least a strong second half to survive.

Marker Behind the Scenes of Bye Week [5:26 AM] reports: '"Being that we're 4-4 and we just lost a pretty big game in a big way, there is more attention to detail and more focus at the couple of practices we have," said Milloy. "We need to iron out some of the things we've been doing wrong that have been putting us in adverse situations."'

Marker Williams Has Company In Blame Game [5:25 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'However, we will probably never find out if Gregg Williams could have been a good coach in Buffalo, because I believe he has his hands tied, and has had too much of his power taken away.'

Marker If season doesn't improve, Bills' coach should pay for team's disappointing play [11:22 PM]
Pro Football Weekly reports: I saw a team lacking an identity on offense or defense, and as a result, lacking the fire and passion of a team that believes in itself and is committed to excellence.
